The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

I am a bit surprised at many of the reactions.

I never doubted that planetary landings would be implemented at all. Having seen and read every interview with David Braben since the kickstarter this was always crystal clear afaic.

And I already bought that expansion too :).

Yeah, but having him mention it again specifically and then confirm it doesn't hurt. Especially with all the absurd speculation that was flying around. It also just makes me happy.

Ah, the future! A realm of swirling mist and distorted shapes. We have travelled there in the past, so perhaps it is time for another journey to the edge of what lies beyond! I'll go and fetch my time travelling gear. It seems to be mostly food and drink in quantities best carried by a space ship. It is hungry and thirsty work to move through the decades you see!

Is missed that confirmation I thought it was still only speculated as not being part of the same universe. Fair enough then.

To be fair it was not absolutely black and white (but then this is FD, everything they write is ambiguous) but there were enough things that simply did not fit with it being integrated. Besides which, where's the fun in there actually being some news. Much better to mumble Bah Humbug! into your beard.

This makes me happy. Just having confirmation they are working on getting out of the pilot seat is all I wanted. I want to feel like I'm flying a ship, not like I am a ship. Planetary landings is just a bonus. I can't wait to explore the ships interiors.

Agreed, not sure why there are woo-hoos and high-fives all round, there's never been any doubt that planetary landings is planned has there? (or first/third person walking around)

Without wishing to come over all negative, if you take those statements out the article doesn't contain anything we didn't already know yesterday unless I'm missing something?

I'm impressed that you can see mist and shapes :) When I try to look into the future nothing happens...

People here have been very skittish with everything that happening recently a reconfirmation that it is still planned is good.

This isn't really news. They confirmed landings and fp when they sold the expansions back in beta.

The "third person" thing was already discussed that it's the same debug camera we have on pc but on xbox.

Nothing ground breaking here.

To be fair there were a few people claiming that these wouldn't happen because they either couldn't or wouldn't do it. This came after, as you correctly mentioned, it had previously been confirmed.

Yes, those things were never in doubt really, same as with the Thargoids.

But ok, let's remember, many players joined after release and may not be as aware about these things as others. For them these conformations can be reassuring.

The "no cross play" bit (even though expected) was probably the one item that could do with being confirmed, so that's that out of the way.

He kept a straight face and gave nothing away.

IF they do plan any paid DLC this year, i didn't expect it to be revealed at a US show anyway. Being a US produced console, E3 was always going to be about the XB1 release primarily.

Paid expansions to the core game, they'll reveal at a show in their home (and presumably main) market, Europe.....Gamescom in Cologne in August.

Imo, if nothing is announced there, we won't see any before 2016.

This is one thing that does annoy me about FD, their absolute refusal to crowd source any assets at all. There is a quite obvious lack of assets for generation (stations anyone?) and a huge fanbase that would love to help add to the game. They'd be able to pick and choose at their leisure what went in, and yet the answer to "let us help" is always a resounding NO. I never got why they do that.

Correct, that is kind of strange. If they let people offer some design of stations etc. there would be more diversity in the universe. Maybe it has to do with legal rights?

I think it's the first "confirmation" we've seen (journalistic errors and omissions excepted) that Xbox and PC players won't meet in game - the last I saw was it was "desirable" but it seemed unlikely.

ETA - Ninja'd by the post above..

If you agreed to waive all rights to the content in exchange for it being in the game ... there'd be no legal issues
if you didn't agree, then it would not be considered for inclusion.

It's Frontier's pitch, David Braben's ball, and we're standing on the sidelines wanting join in.

I don't know why people are wanting fp and pl so early. FD haven't even got the basic game fleshed out yet so selling paid dlc now would be a kick in the teeth tbh.

I've already paid for them both so that;'s not an issue with me and I do want them but there's no rush. I'd be surprised if they get announced by this time next year tbh. Holidays 2016 for the first one would be logical going on the current state of development any sooner and I think they'll be half baked and badly implemented.

One major paid expansion per year (around Christmas) seems likely too me (which means one at the end of 2015)...alongside continued free updates to the core game at the same time.

Probably more to do with their stuff all being modular so everything needs to fit together, the procedural generation is assembling stations and outposts from modules rather than just picking them from a set list so everything has to look right and fit properly.

I would assume they will be doing similar with all the assets in game even down to a "Spore" like automated fauna and flora creator, not the kind of thing you can or would want to outsource and that's even before you get into wanting to keep your art style consistent with your own vision.

The time spent checking and testing fan submissions is better spent on game development in my opinion.
