Ships Introducing the Diamondback Explorer

...But I disagree about the Vulture and the FDL. The Vulture is an amazing machine, probably the best designed specialist craft in the game.

I interepreted his comment of "purpose built" as the fact that no real producer of a vehicls such as that, for that purpose, would gimp it in such arbitrary ways. Look at the size of the Vulture, it's near the length of a Type-6, yet it was designed with a powerplant, which cannot suppport its intended weapons. It has such large engines but average speeds. It has unnecessarily over designed bolsters that block the front view to the sides. It has only two hardpoints when it has space for a third medium, or two smalls more, at least.

My point is: it's a gamey ship which is neutred in unrealistic ways to make sure it isn't "OP". No real combat ship would be designed like that. Similar criticsims, to lesser extent, can be levelled at many of the design choices of other ships in the game:

The FDL's only shortcoming is the jump range, it is an amazing ship in every other respect (note that a rich playboy's porsche is not exactly a fuel efficient range champion either).

No, it's hardpoint placement is ridiculously gimped for a combat ship. That would never have made it off the drawing board in any realistic consideration.

I returned to civilisation this morning. Cashed in around 15 Million credits worth of data towards the stretch goal. Travelled over 50k LY with the DBE. Modules and Hull at 100%.

So the gist is you don't actually need the auto-repair unit? My objection to the DBE was that I couldn't fit the repair unit as well as a fuel scoop, however, maybe it's not needed? However, I agree about the flaws in the design - and I like the idea of a custom engineering shop where ships can be reworked. Maybe you could also swap around the internal compartments provided you didn't exceed the original total - so for example, the DBE stock has 4,4,3,3,2; total 16 - so you could swap to 5,3,3,3,1,1 which is also 16 total. Maybe you could even add in the fuel tank space, so you could reduce the general compartment space and add to the fuel tank, e.g. make the fuel tank 6 and have 4,3,3,3,1,1.

I feel a suggestion coming on :)

You can fit both (and remove the cargo rack from my configuration). The AMFU costs around 4 Million Quid. I didn't need it while flying to the core. Before that, I explored with my multi-purpose Cobra around the "bubble", never more than 3000 LY away. I never got it damaged exploring. If you pay attention, nothing bad will happen in my view.

The highest risk is coming back to civilization, especially docking.

I bought myself a Diamondback Explorer as a fun runabout/exploration ship (My main vessel at the moment is an Imp Clipper, which isn't the best for exploring tbh) Impressive jump range to say the least, once I upgraded the FSD, around 30LY! Decent sized fuel tank as well.

I also rather like the general 'helicopter gunship' feel of the ship, especially the cockpit. Makes me nostalgic for my days playing Gunship 2000 on the Amiga :) but now: in SPAAAAACE!

I'm loving this ship, got one on Friday, 1 large G beam on belly, 2 F cannons on the sides of the cockpit.
It's fast, great jump range, maneuverability; has a bit of trouble tracking a courier, but maybe that's just me.

Well I had another look and I withdraw most of my complaints, the only remaining one being the poor configuration of the internal compartments - made a suggestion in the suggestions board about that so go vote for it :D

After realising that a pure explorer has no need of cargo space, I put an extra 16 fuel an a 3A scoop on, took it for a trip to about 1000ly "south" (i.e. away from the core) from Sol and back, no issues at all. Now thinking I might put a 4A scoop on, leave the fuel at the stock 32 and put a level 3 auto repair unit in just in case. Having 48 fuel is a nice buffer meaning you don't have to scoop every time, but really 32 is enough for that. Aside form the scanners, and weapons (3E gimballed pulse laser, 2x2F G multicannon) it has D everything except scoop and FSD, also had point defense on the rear point and 3x D shield booster on the others, mainly cos I had spare power and if I was attacked they could be useful. That said I didn;t have any attacks on my test run.

Picked up a couple of "firsts" as well, out in the boondocks :D

I am seriously thinking of getting one of these. At risk of repeating questions already asked what is the best explorer fit for one of these bad boys? An EDshipyard link would be cool. Sorry for any repetition.

Could fit into the sales prospect ;-)

Here's my DBE

However, it may not be ideal. I was going for a min 30ly jump range, but still be somewhat survivable if I was interdicted.

It's been that. I tend to get interdicted a few times while heading out from station to do an exploration loop. I've not had to run yet, but then the pirates weren't ever above competent in rank. Above that, and being that she's not the nimblest, then i'd rely on my shields and run. As such, I always submit so I have that option.

I would probably change a couple things, though. I've never had to use the AFU. Most damage I've had on her was 2% from a failed interdiction sub. and my being stupid and alt+tab to read a post during a jump. Emergency drop from SC at a star.

I'm also thinking about dropping the pulse lasers for multicannons.

Finally, I'll probably drop the thrusters down to D and drop the power distributer down to a 3A so I can tack on a couple of A0 shield boosters and either another chaff luncher or a heatsink launcher.

And I'll probably drop the AFU in favor of a cargo slots just so I can pick up some salvage if anything shows up out there (WSS's seem to be all over the place...).

All in all she's not a cheap ship. But she's less than half the cost of a kitted out ASP and has a bit more jump range when going A rated parts.

I don't really do max range jumps when i'm exploring so I can't comment on the fuel scoop inadequacies. Most of the time I have roughly 50% full tank and bring that back up to 50% on eco jumps somewhere around 300ly (not empty at that point just cautious).

I have roughly this DBE, it was my original proposal:
http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=70i,,2-3I6u7_5K2C5K8I,4_w0722UI7Q42jw

I did two things differently:
I fitted a Class 3A AFMU and I fitted a larger Power Distributor, the smallest one (mass!) that can make the ship boost.

I went to Sagittarius A* and back with it, without a scratch. Currently I'm on a mapping mission near inhabited space for the CG, but then I will leave again towards the Core for mapping Neutron Star fields.

Has anyone seen the DBE on XB1?

I keep seeing Scout everywhere.. but when I go to the listed stations supposedly selling the DBE, it's not there.

PS: Petition to call it the DBX instead of the DBE, because: Reasons.

Thank you for the info. Something to work on. Still need a few more mil creds but its a starter.

Here's my PvP Combat fitted Diamondback Explorer aka "The Lurker"
This is meant for silent running / stealth also can Hull Tank in support of aster DB Scouts.

Can be used for ambushing enemies in HiRes using Silent Running

This is the build:

-CMDR Na'Qan, Velite Stealth Squadron, Lavigny's Legion

Here's another clean fight using the Diamondback Explorer fitted for PvP.

Enemy commander avoided my ramming but that didn't change the outcome.

2xC2 Imperial Hammers
1XC2 Torpedoes

After a lot of thought and after bounty hunting in the DBS and making a few mil creds I decided to return to the DBE and return to exploring. I have got to say I am glad I have returned to exploring after much 'pew-pew'.
The build for my DBE is below and is based on a 'pure' explorer fit, I have even forgone boost to save on mass and increase jump range. The biggest boon with the DBE is the 5A FSD. Over 30LY range is very nice (33.55LY full tank).
No AMFU. I totally agree with previous poster who says if you fly carefully you don't need one, have had several before and never used them.

At just under 10 mil creds for a good explorer it is cheap in my opinion. If you are realistic and tell yourself you will not fight in it and just explore in it it's a great ship. However never done any pew-pew in this, maybe its something to consider after my long trip out.

Can you actually equip that 1A power dist.?

Here's a better build, imo, if you want max jump. Also, it removes the docking computer which you don't need at all and replaces it with cargo racks which will allow you to modify your jump range a little if you need to finesse your routes a little more than what the galaxy map will do.

The A ranked power plant will mean you have to deal with heat quite a bit less. Well worth it if you're not running heat sinks.

It's 33.6ly and only a couple mil. more.

Thank you for the advice Cdr:) I made some changes on your advice:
Power distributor: changed to a D3 (light/cheaper and I can now boost)
Power plant: changed to an A2
Fuel scoop: changed to an A4
Docking computer: changed to a D3 AFMU
Thanks for the reply and happy safe trails out there.
