Graphics are getting worse

I really hope that when all of this xbox release nonsense is done, and the console kiddies are sold on the idea that they have the same “hi-res” graphics as the PC version, then FD will do the honourable thing and scale my graphics back up again please.

When I forked out £1500 for a new PC, I didn’t expect to have Elite’s graphics deliberately and regularly by Frontier.

Am I wrong ?

People will no doubt state this is nothing to do with the consoles. That may well be so. And really that is besides the point.

We have proof that the graphics are of a lower quality now, than they were previously. However we don't know why that is, or if it is only temporary. So a word from Frontier on this would be really welcome.

I mainly mine so I can't say for other areas but I can say for certain that the asteroid fields have had quite a huge graphics downgrade :(

It would behove people to remember that the xbox one is somewhat more capable than many of the PCs running E : D...

...and that there are already a range of graphics settings to cope with different hardware capabilities.

So while I'm not saying nothing's changed, it would seem odd that the top-end PC experience would be altered to allow for xbox, when
a) The xbox could use a different set of graphics settings, and
b) Anything that can't be covered by graphics settings is already OK on older PCs that have less power than the xbox.

The rings thing is annoying, used to look much better and perform just the same.
My gamma is on max in RES now anyway cos I can't see anything at all normal brightness unless I'm right near a star shining perpendicular to the ring system.

My PC is running everything on maximum. I've paid a premium for that capability. Yet, I'm seeing things get scaled back on the quiet by FD.

Very annoying when DB keeps quoting ED is 16k capable blah blah blah.

Get the consoles out of the way, and then give us some shiny back please FD.

You didn't read beyond the first paragraph of my post, did you? Or if you did, you still entirely missed the point.

What I was saying is that there is no reason for FD to have scaled things back for xbox in a way that affects everybody. Maybe things have changed, but I doubt that the xbox is the reason.

I didn't miss your point, but i do disagree.

There is a reason: marketing.

Selling xbox players on the idea that they have the same graphics as PC. They can only achieve this by retarding the PC graphics to fall in line with what the xbox is capable of. Maybe FD came up with this plan all by themselves, but I suspect Microsoft had a hand in it - doesn't really matter.

Gamespot and the like always do graphic comparison videos highlighting the differences between consoles...or in this case PC vs Xbone. I'm sure Microsoft don't want their new toy to be considered as inferior to a top end gaming PC rig. Even though it clearly is!

When the xbox release is done and dusted, the PC-level-graphics need to be switched back on again.

I recently upgraded the graphics card in my PC.
Elite Dangerous looks better than it did before.

The problem with planetary rings appears to be a display bug, rather than some of deliberate reduction in graphics quality by FD.

Seriously, the whole idea that "FD would make PC graphics worse because X-Box" is beyond nonsensical.

It's like a kind of mass hysteria.

Although I doubt that's the case here, there have actually been games where the graphics have been downgraded at some point to run on consoles. It's not completely unthinkable.

Not totally without foundation though.. Several games have been "limited" so they won't look better than consoles, just check out the new batman game for one. PC version limited to 30fps like consoles.

does anyone got a old GraphicsConfiguration.xml file saved? could be interesting to do a comparison, and perhaps its possible to re-enable options in it if anything has been lowered.

Witcher 3 was "downgraded" on PC massively, the game I got "for free with vid card purchase" was nothing like the previously shown graphics. It was severely nerfed.
