I would like to say one thing - Elite Dangerous has operated on a smaller budget than Star Citizen not because of luck, but because of the business model Star Citizen employs. While I agree that the vast majority of Star Citizen's financial impetus comes from its pledge ship sales, I believe that they tend to have a less cynical, more supportive forum community because of how open the developers are about everything they're working on. When they do keep quiet about a coming feature, when they do keep secrets for a big reveal, nobody resents it because we get to see so much about where the game is going anyway. And when a player has a concern, when an issue is repeatedly raised about the same element of the game, it's never long before the developers make an official statement - Usually that they're aware of the problem, and working on a solution.
No such luck from FD. There's nothing so discouraging to someone who backed a game with high hopes than to not hear whether any of the original promises for post-1.0 development have since been abandoned, or have any idea WHEN the content we know IS coming might emerge. I bought an Anaconda recently, at long last. I almost have 700 million credits now, which will be enough to outfit it for combat, and cover the rebuy. After that, what? I might just quit and forget about the game. Now, if I knew, say, that an expansion was coming in X number of months that would give my Anaconda a huge interior to explore and NPC crew, that'd certainly ensure I stayed with the game. I'd also feel like there was less to complain about.
If I knew good things were coming, and knew WHEN they were coming, I'd recommend the game to my friends. At this stage I'm sorry to say I can't. I'm often asked whether ED is a good game. I reply that it's a very polished game, but not enjoyable in the long run without a great deal of patience, and a preparedness to engage in grinding that is in no way enjoyable or meaningful to get to the endgame content - Which would be nothing special, just a bigger ship with bigger guns.
