Was graphics quality stealth-nerfed in the last update?

it may be a little unfair to just blame the Xbox for the GFX downgrade, don't forget they ported to Mac as well. Macs normally run "M" series GFX chip sets and not proper cards leaving them extremely under powered.

You forgot Apple. Apparently we are blaming Apple now as well.

Heads-up: next target will be Sony, in case that wasn't obvious.

I don't think its a matter of blaming anyone I think Frontier are trying to reach as many customers as possible which they wont be able to do if the game only runs on an i7 hex core with twin GTX titans, they are optimizing for the larger customer base not the 1% of people who have £2000 plus PCs.

I noticed today that the space port "innards" don't render until you're practically flying through the entrance. This is a shame, as it is immersion breaking: to not be able to see what's coming toward you until you're basically inside the "grill" is silly. Has anyone else noticed this or am I the only one??
Yes, I noticed this. I assume happened in one of the recent v1.3 patches (if not v1.3 itself). Doesn't give a good impression - looks nearly (but not quite) as bad as it did at one point during the original Beta (for v1.0).

I just love this - Ben drops pretty much valid explanation of issues but thread just carries on, calling it a graphics downgrade.

Ben, it is just not worth to comment on this. These people are already decided what's correct answer is. Still thank you for dropping by :)

It's not that they are steadily worse. They are being adjusted. Just because you have a high-end computer, doesn't mean everyone else does.

Until a few days ago, I played Elite on a low end computer. Constructed in 2008, it featured a Q9550, 8GB RAM, and has been retrofitted in 2013 with a mid range GTX 670 GPU. And I was playing on max settings smoothly. How much more low can a gamer rig get?
Frontier doesn't need to "optimize" for even lower standards, it has to improve graphics.

Now I am replacing it with a 5960X, 64GB RAM, 3x Titan X Hydro Copper GPUs (one of them is currently in RMA) and Elite looks quite mediocre compared to Star Citizen on the new 4k 40" screen.

In this case, it even impacts gameplay, as the "Star" at the back of the station is a vital indicator when coming in through the mail slot. If you don't see it, your not correctly aligned. But now you see it only very short before you fly through.

There's plenty of people in this thread that appreciated and heard what Ben said! :) Part of what he said is that in some cases some of these changes may be unintentional. So we need to wait and hopefully hear from Frontier, so they can tell us which parts are intentional and which are unintentional.

As for those opinions you don't like - there is an ignore function on this forum for a reason. Don't worry about those guys man! I think we all want Elite to be the best it can be...so let's hope we get some answers on this soon. In the meantime Ben's answers have gone a long, long way to clarify a lot of things. :)

There are plenty of people ITT that seem to want someone to blame e.g. MS, Apple. All rational thought seems to have gone out of the window.

Could be that some newer players don't realise that Ben is a former FD graphics programmer.

It's a lot harder to do when you're on staff, unfortunately. Since we're not meant to accidentally reveal or confirm new features or changes there's a tendency to second-guess yourself, try to work out whether you're really talking in general terms or whether your response is founded on actually knowing the current state of play of the feature being discussed.

Why is there this kind of communication block... :(

As has been posted above, Frontier have acknowledged there is an issue with the ring systems. However we don't know to what extent that is at the moment. For what it's worth here is a comparison shot anyway (using PC shots from CaptainKremmen).

Unless the comparisons are made with the exact same lighting angles these comparative images are completely irrelevant. KVwEUBY.jpg

Whether other people will think the same as you do. It often becomes easier to just focus on your actual job or only get stuck in on abstract threads like the 32-vs-64 wars, and those people whose actual job is to talk to you guys aren't generally in the position to give a fine-grained reply in the first place, because their job doesn't involve messing with the features you're talking about.

Fair enough, and well understood - but surely the people whose job it is to talk to us and see what is going on (i.e. blowing up) on the forums could speak to the devs and come up with a response that would be sufficient to put said fires out before they turn into an inferno? That is generally what other companies at least try to do on their forums. A little communications generally goes a long way.

On the internet a little communication just adds fuel to the flames.

No communication means a conspiracy.

Full disclosure means they are really hiding something.

Frontier themselves have already confirmed that there are changes/problems with the fog. And and ex Frontier graphics employee has mentioned the fog rendering has been changed.

But yes, I get your point.

Oh absolutely. There is no denying that at all. They will continue to optimise the game to get the best performance they can from it. I'm glad you go the point of the image though. Many wouldn't.

Hopefully they find a balance between maintaining high quality graphics and balance - which is generally the point of optimization of course, but some people fear Frontier could potentially take the easy path and simply lower the bar for the graphics. Time will tell. But for now, at least we have an idea of what is going on.
