Modes The Solo vs Open vs Groups Thread - Part the Second [Now With Added Platforms].

I think (read: this is my opinion) the underlying issue with all of this (from a PP/CG perspective) is that FD never really intended for CGs or PP to be direct PvP type interactions. PP was meant to be PvP only in the sense that you can undermine my power and fortify yours, while I can undermine yours and fortify mine. I honestly don't think FD ever intended for blockades to be a realistic game play element. So it makes perfect sense that the game's design doesn't support blockade-style game play. And at the end of the day, blockades are what we're talking about: either blockading a CG or direct CMDR-on-CMDR prevention of accomplishing PP goals (which is just small-scale blockading).

If FD wanted Blockades to be a part of this game, they would not have used the instancing mechanism they have right now.

I think you nailed it. Open players want to stop players from undermining/fortifying by shooting them. But those are not PP rules. If you want to stop your enemies, you must do the counter task, not killing them.

Hmm, force people to do what they don't want to do, then expend development resources altering the game.
Did you read any of the threads about the Dumbfire spammers, the Orca rammers, etc? In those threads and others, there were posters yelling at FDev for wasting resources to change the game in order to prevent griefing..

Is exactly what happens in every mmo.

I'm not into PvP. I hate PvP. I don't understand why people would PvP. It's dumb. All of it.

Winged up with someone from Germany last Thursday. Never met him before. All we did was trade and shoot a couple of NPC pirates. Well... He shot them as I was in an unarmed T9. It was the most fun I had since the last time I winged up with someone.

All those nice people in solo that could be having fun together. Makes me weep. I will get you out of solo and you WILL have more fun. Honest. Most people don't want to gank you.

People who play in Solo or groups aren't generally doing it to spite you (or anyone else they don't know and don't care about).

You are probably mostly correct but it does baffle me a bit that so many seem to pretend there is no issue at all here.
Surely you can understand the frustration when, for example:

- Another power declares it's intention to undermine a certain system of yours
- You rally your members and set out to oppose them
- On arrival you find that to them the winning was more important than the taking part and they have dropped into solo

Hopping between modes to achieve certain goals more easily is a frustrating result of the mixed modes.

I don't think most solo players are trying to spite open players. I'm not sure anybody thinks that tbh.
Just as not all solo players do it to spite the open folk, not all open players want to 'impose their superiority' on other people.

Frontier have been clear that they are not going to change this and yet introduce Powerplay and hope that it will encourage more player interaction. That hope seems a little doomed to me.

Open could add enormous richness to the game or it could just be a way to wave at each other occasionally.

Not really. I don't care if someone in another mode (or even another Solo instance) burns a trade route I'm using because he has a T9. I just don't want to see him or read his (potentially) inane babblings over chat. I don't care that he affects the around me.

So your problem with open can be solved with the mute function in the comms panel?

I'm an introvert. If you made me interact with other people I would be grumpy and snapping at people all day at work because I was not allowed to recharge my energy during my "alone time" and I would potentially lose my job. Thanks for that.

I don't want to be forced to be rude and ignore people who try to chat with me, that's not how I am.

It's the only combat way to do PP. Players don't count towards undermining.

ah, that i didn't know, i just trade though, so while i'll happily oblige the odd PP enemy ship that chooses to poke me with a stick, i have yet to actually go hunting them directly.

still, none of these things should unbalance PP, there are always going to be players in every mode representing every power in play. proportionally, the results would hardly differ, even in a large homogeneous mode lol

thanks for the info Jordan... Aarrrrrrrr

But most don't talk ! There seems to me massive misconceptions about open, it is not full of chatterbox psycos just shooting everyone.
I can't speak for that guy but I never said it was all psychos. But the other part of his point mustn't be forgotten:

I just don't want to see him

Say what you like about my character but sometimes I just like to be on my bill for a while.

Those nice people in solo don't need to go into Open to play the game with other people - there are plenty of Private Groups out there - some with controlled access and an aversion to those who join specifically to gank. They have that freedom - as all players have been given free choice as to which mode to play in....

As an aside, I'm intrigued - how do you propose to get players out of Solo? Also, as people's definition of "fun" varies, how do you know that you would guarantee them "fun" even if you did manage in some way to get them out of Solo?

Though you may be preoccupied with your own thoughts and feelings you don't really minimise your contact with other people here.

I do it at my own pace without feeling any pressure to respond in a timely manner, if at all. I come to the forum when I want and leave when I want. My terms. I don't have that control in Open. However, I don't need you to understand me, the small number of people I choose as friends do and that's enough for me.

Did you ever, or do you ever, get told that you're wasting your life on video games? Have you ever been told that there is another, wonderful, extra special world of "clubbing" that you would love more than anything else if only you went out and gave it a go?

Has anyone ever told you that, for your own good, you need to give up video games and go play football? Have you ever heard the mantra that video games are unhealthy and you need to go and get some mates, go out, and have a kick around in the park?

Not everyone finds the same things fun.

There is nothing sadder than seeing all those "populated" systems without barely any population. And I'm not talking about NPCs, they are just bunch of ones and zeros. I'm talking about cmdrs, living persons, with their routines, doing unpredictable stuff. Chatting occasionally when two, three or more cmdrs "meet" in space.
I like to type in: "hi" in local chat when I'm in a space port with other cmdrs, some reply, some don't. I don't blame them if they don't feel like replying.

For me, playing in Open is about that feeling that galaxy is alive. That something is always happening in it. It doesn't necessarily have to be PvP killing. Hey, you can even have PvP without killing, a friendly joust with a mate. See who's got bigger.... SCB reserve :D

The thing I really don't like and would like to see changed is solo influencing open and vice versa. :(
