Colossal announcement at Gamescom in two weeks' time

I'm not going to speculate on this. I don't want to get all excited to find out it's something new that wasn't even discussed in the original design discussion and just creates more grind.

Planetary landing.

It's the next thing after the Xbox release that guarantees FD another influx of money.

I would agree, for that reason and because they've added the ability to select planets straight from the system map... something that has no purpose for now, but pave the way for PL... (though I hope not end of 2016 though, cauz that would mostly be a colossal amount of waiting)

They will confirm... Half Life 3

Just kidding ;) ... I think by "Colossal" they mean literally big in measurements: Federal Corvete, the biggest spaceship.

Hope at some point they introduce sections/zones for shields to make combat more tactical, dropping only certain parts and having some sides stronger than others.

Well if it's something with big measurements then that will be stations, and at a guess it will be something about having battles over or around stations.
But do we have a scale of some kind? Could narrow it down, is colossal more or less than gigittyantic or mahoosive ?

I'm thinking it's Planetary Landings, implemented as a text adventure. The Earthlike procedural generation will lift the first location from Colossal Cave:

Code:
You are standing at the end of a road before a small brick building. Around you is a forest. A small stream flows out
of the building and down a gully.

>

The Colossal Announcement™ will of course be compatibility and inter-operability with Star Citizen. ;)

In reply to the background sim.
They don't need to go to Gamescom to announce that, they did that yesterday on their news feed. You should read it. Apparently only a tiny bit of the background sim was limited. Some states simply were not able to be in conflict, war, or voting at a specific time. So they are changing that. Every thing else about the background sim seems to be working properly. At least from my experience with a few zones I know groups have flipped.
What amazes me about that most is that it's taken so long for people to work it out.

I'd rather they didn't tell people these things or change it - it makes life much easier for the observant groups.

And if the colossal word does not apply to the game but to another domain ? An association with Microsoft development teams ? The return of Ian Bell ? The release for a movie Elite Dangerous to the cinema ? A new investor who brings £100 million for the development of the game ? etc ...

Colossal... meaning unfathomably large. So large that only a computer could describe or calculate it by using procedural generation. What else could FD's utter silence to this speculation mean?

I still say its PS4 release. And some special side pewpew game timed exclusive for them.

or

Possibly

It
might
be

A trade based card game you can play when space docked.

Or maybe

it could
oh no possibly

Plush ship replica's available in the FD store.

Along with digital booster packs for the card game.

All joking aside

Ya its got to be something that they will ask money for.

I think the Planetary Landing Expansion is the colossal announcement at Gamescom. First phase will start in Q4 2015. The devs said they would do it within the first year of release.

Oooh - what if Microsoft buy Frontier for the Elite IP, kill off the authentication servers and make it a XB1 only franchise, with a free copy for everyone who updates to Windows 10 and streams it from their new 1Tb Elite branded XB1's with the Elite controller bundle - only $499! :D

Mac, PC and probably PS4 peeps throw an absolutely COLOSSAL fit and the world descends into chaos and rich MSFT execs :D

It seems to me that tier 2 NPCs would be a logical next step, especially now that tier 1 NPCs have been implemented (i.e. the Powers). That might not sound flashy enough for a big announcement but it could mean NPC crew, persistent NPCs to interact with for missions, passengers, NPC wingmen for hire, etc... These are all things from the DDF but they could not release these features without the framework that has been developing since release. You can't very well hire NPC wingmen without the Wings update. It was also mentioned that the Powerplay update changed the structure of the mission system to allow for changes in the future. Perhaps persistent NPCs will be able to give us missions or hire us to do community goals. At least this is what I am hoping it is, although I will also be happy if it is just atmospheric flight or landing on planets without atmospheres. I'm easy. :)
