PLEASE stop the way space stations ROTATE

With the price of fuel in the year 3301 it's trivial to keep a station facing the planet by creating Precession on the rotating body at specifically timed points on the station to give a similar effect to how helicopters can align their rotors (which are spinning very rapidly) to become parallel to any point of reference, AKA Banking, Pitching etc.

Yes, I suppose you could do it gyroscopically, but on a very large scale.

Washing: look for recommended setting for woollen mittens, stick cat in at that setting - should be close enough :)

I can't stand it anymore. It makes me cringe everytime I drop out of SC and see a station.
THIS DOESN'T WORK!!! :mad::mad::mad:

You can't have space stations rotate like they do AND have the entrance point in the general direction of the planet they're orbiting. :(

It will not work! The entrance will be, after half an orbit, opposite of the planet.
Which would, by the way, not change a thing as when you drop out of SC it's always a gamble where the entrance is - it definitely is NEVER where you expect it.

dunno why this bothers you so much but just fyi: you are completely wrong.

Solution is simple:
Have them rotate perpendicular to their orbit plane.

nice non-solution to a non-existent problem. would be fun when someone came along randomly shouting "THIS DOESN'T WORKKKKKK!!!!", though :)

And please, for heaven's sake, add a second entrance. Lots of problems solved (except for occasional drafts of space winds with two doors open..).

don't get what supposed problem this would solve, but it would be damn cool, i would be head on boosting through stations just for the blast. +1!

So if I put my cat in my washing machine and she starts running counter to rotation, will she start to levitate in the center? I already tried the bread-butter-cat perpetuum mobile. Wait a second, just need to figure out how to get her running in the desired direction.

In space, assuming zero gravity, if your cat could run against the rotation speed, one way of looking at it is that the cat wouldn't be in the rotating frame of the machine barrel any more, and could be regarded as being in a simple inertial frame, and so it could drift toward the centre (increasingly difficult to get grip with paws though.)

On Earth, it would also have its weight to contend with, so would probably drop to the bottom of the barrel and receive a pre-wash, wash, spin, etc. according to settings. Call vet.

Made me laugh....

Super Cruise is fine
Ships dog fighting in space like there's an atmosphere and gravity is fine
All kinds of fantastical weapons and ships of so many shapes (why are empire ships more aerodynamic than the rest? does it matter in space?)
Fuel scooping, I'm sure that is 100% possible with a few odds and ends from the back of my kitchen drawer, the one with the old batteries and keys for things I've long lost...

However there is a simple reason for having the opening facing the planet....it's where the people who built it live (well in the game of course, which you may have to suspend belief in order to swallow that one too). Why have shuttles flying round to the other side?

And also.... try flying round the space station in super cruise and point to the station with the planet behind you and guess what....you face the entrance....

Why not have a second entrance - well I do have to question where you'd put that big spike at the end? You really need to think about these things! ;-)

Lastly there is of course outposts if you don't want to land in a spinney thing :)

Although I am hoping this was just a hand grenade post....post it and let it explode rather than some lack of understanding of games/fiction :)

Live long and prosper a wise alien once said, he was real too!

Dunno? Is your washing machine in zero-g to start with? Is your cat magic?

I could do this during a parabolic flight for starters. Sorry for getting off topic, but it wasn't me who talked about space trucks going counter rotational.

IIRC stations in ED have a FSD, might help with the tidal lock. Would explain why dropping out of SC isn't seamless aswell.

Just a thread with some people interested in the physics of it - I think we're realistic enough to know it doesn't matter..

But if you're not interested, read the other trillions of words available on the internet.

I'm sure you understand :)

I want to rep you for every post in this thread, but the forum doesn't let me.

I don't understand the physics of it, but if I approach the station from the planet I always drop out of SC with the door facing me.

I just read the thread, then read it again to rep everyone discussing the cat.

Cheers. Letting CMDRs know what happens to their feline friends when they reach the Final Frontier is one of this forum's most valuable functions, especially when the fur starts flying...

I'd just like to add one thing: I suggested a spin-axis perp to the orbital plane - but that would put the slot always at the top or the bottom of the space-station - never facing the planet. Silly idea. But at least you would always know where it was, with no libration.

Regarding cats: Personally, I always put mine through the industrial whites, high temperature cycle. They come out smelling great. No complaints from them so far, but I do have to buy a new set of cats every week. Maybe separate them in future from the overalls, which last for months.

Regards

:)

Maximum speed limits in space are ok though?

Just asking.

No, it's not OK, but that's an old one :)

No max speed limits in space as long as your thrusters are powering.

As for approaching light speed - yeah, OK, yes, got that; yes - we know! C - yes! (small c actually) Yep, got it.

But please let's not go there until I can open a thread - I've already had matron trying to put me to bed.

Wait until you see the speed tickets for each ship in normal space and you'll know why every computer is programmed to impose a speed limit.

Even the Emperor is afraid of them.

And everything else.

Because he is a coward.

Besides the rather interesting discussions rg rotation(s)...

The reason for OP's high blood pressure seems to be the above quoted above - a perceived randomness of the SC-drop-out-point in relation to the station entrance. Personally, I approach the station in an arc, ultimately placing me in between the planet and the station, thus usually exiting SC on the 'right' side of the station. What's everyone else's way to drop out of SC infront of the station most times?

It's not a big issue to me, but when I do attempt to run in along a radial line from planet to station, the slot is usually facing.

The new docking computer AI, of course, means that you can engage it at any point within range and it seems to sort it all out for you.
