I think at this point the only thing that wouldn't result in a backlash would be planetary landing.

There will be a backlash for that too - "Why are you bringing out a PAID expansion when the main game is still incomplete/broken?" Doesn't affect me as I get any expansion for free but I'd still echo those thoughts in the sense that I'd rather the main game was far more complete than it is before they tack on any more extras. But it seems to be the way of the development now - small plasters on whatever's released followed by yet another add-on (that needs bandages, but gets plasters too)... repeat ad nauseum.

The barreling hype train with PLANETARY LANDINGS plastered on the side should be indication enough that a PL paid expansion would go over pretty well with a majority of players. As much as that pains me, FD's track record so far has been "attract more profit." Which I can't blame them for...it still makes me a little blue.

I still hope to learn in a few hours that the cake is not a lie, and our time in gamma prison/shard/slice will be over.

I'll make a minor stink if it is planetary landing. Mainly just because I don't think the game is ready for it and it is still in need of further build out. If it is PL and then we are going to do all these other things, too...I might feel okay. Otherwise, I just think PL will add a novelty that will wear off quickly without the richness needed in other areas, where you will still spend most of your time.

I guess either you buy into the process they outlined since the KS (that always seemed pretty clear to me) we're making this big game. We can't afford to do it, no publisher will touch it. We'll put out stuff starting with "the bare minimum to be an Elite game" and if people buy it on it's own merits we'll continue making all of those features and sell a bunch of expansions instead of just making sequels.

OR

They should have picked another funding model from the start to raise enough cash to do a 5 year development plan or something.

I think I'll go with the former...Honestly, if it IS the paid expansion for PL, I just hope it has more in than just landing on any planet...looking around and saying, "ahh" and then taking off.

Of course the game is not ready for it.

But it was not ready for release in December, and that did not stop FD.

I fully expect planetary landings to be announced. I actually have no problem with that at all. We have been told it is a separate team (but them we have also been told that 'most of the developers' have been working on this surprise, so that doesn't quite square), and were told during the kickstarter days to expect the first paid expansion about a year after release of the game. I expect the announcement to be that it will be available by Christmas (though they managed to surprise me by announcing XBox available today at E3 - I was expecting an announcement of a date). It should produce at least half a shed full of cash. Good news all round.

My problem, of course, is not the resource spent on expansions, which had already been separated out, but the resource spent by the core team doing 'non core stuff', instead of 'completing the core game'. That old argument.

Maybe 'Landing' on planets is a slightly misleading term coined by the community. In the previous games it wasn't just about landing, just getting close enough to do something. Attack a target or photograph a military base or drop a mining machine. Could be interesting to have those kinds of missions back.

That's going to upset people because it's a paid expansion.

Bla bla bla why aren't you diverting all available resources into making more free stuff for me? bla bla unfinished game bla bla and so forth.

bla bla wherearethespacewhalesImsureIwaspromised!? bla bla

The collosal announcement was made that a colossal announcement would be made in the near future that something colossal was on the cards...

That day is upon us and I am so excited that this colossal announcement is being made about another colossal announcement that is surely going to be colossal. I am thinking that the colossal announcement will announce colossaly that another three major, super duper, colossal announcements will be announced in the near future...

Watch this space for more information as it is announced... (colossally of course)

Oh, and did I mention that I am so jealous that it is not me making this colossal announcement? I really wish it was me making that one... I am so jealous...

I'm expecting several announcements today

1) Planet landings phase 1 ( limited planet types only) for Xmas. Other planet types coming next year

2) beta release of PC/Mac CQC today.

3) Mac/PC CQC is cross play between XBox and PC (tah-da!)

Good point!

Exactly ....a greater range of missions and things to do will be available.
And some life will be added since (I'd hope) we would start seeing NPCs going back and forth between planet and space.

1st: it won't be PL ... i'm pretty sure about it - makes no sense

2nd: the big announcement will for sure make everybody here whine in a few hours

prediction: Anaconda paintjobs or something poor ...

real prediction: something related to whatever happens at the imperial wedding today - war? // instead of PL I think walking on ships / limited areas of stations is the most logical next step

actually, I don't even think it will be "that" big

What you think is logical is pretty irrelevant when it has been explicitly denied. Unless FD are deliberately spreading false PR just to keep a secret, which would be very silly of them. FD have declared that the Gamescom announcement is not going walkies, and that walkies is a long way off.

Arrgh why can't ED just put up a sticky! From the Newsletter:

Next Wednesday we will make a major announcement coinciding with the opening of the show at 10AM CEST, and you'll be able to read all about it and see our new trailer on our Community homepage.

10am CEST...10am GMT/UTC, 9am BST.

What if basic PL, landing on airless moons, no atmospheric flight, is not an expansion? Just a thought. The full PL expansion would be down the road with fully generated cities and the like, but, in the meantime, everyone would get to land on the Moon (and other like bodies)...making that PL expansion all the more tempting for those who don't have the pass.

Exactly, and to be honest what's the point of PL is we cant walk out of our ship. Thats why I think it will be not PL yet, could be ability to cruise in atmosphere, but not reaching the surface.

Devs hve answered some questions about that, and walking on stations/ships is far far away, a long term update.

I hope It`ll be PL, not the PL we all are looking for, but a first approach to an interactive universe. Now we just have the space, nor the galaxy. The galaxy includes planets, space debris, etc. Not just stations.

I was thinking yesterday about asteroid fields, they are useless now except for mining. I hope FD will add some stuff to asteroid fields, like you have to go "there" for "something", and fly across rocks. I love doing that but... no objective now :S
