The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

Doesn't really make sense to me either, but who knows where that rumour came from?

Then again, the Python is maybe half the size of an Anaconda, but only 12.5% lighter, so maybe the Scarab is made of "Python stuff". I think the game does take some.. liberties.

It would be quite limiting if it does weigh 4T, it'd mean if you're flying a Sidewinder you'll need to use 2 of your 3 internal compartments for cargo racks if you want to bring back any mined materials etc.

About trade and planetary stations

Taken from reddit, CMDR Kanthes
Sure they would! Or at least, I hope so.

I'd like to think that shipping commodities from the surface to the station would be like shipping grain from a farmer to the harbor. Similarly the other way around.

You could just skip the middleman and go straight to the buyer, as well!

Think this actually would make sense, as this gives decent reason to go to surface stations instead of orbiting ones - goods would be more cheap on surface, yet would take more time to get to.

Is there any info about how it is going to be? Couldn't find anything. Either way all the news about planetary landing sound good, will surely play more from now on : )

It would make sense. Food production in ringed stations could never compete with volumes being produced on the surface and fuel is cheap. So most would head to planets for food and sell back to the orbital colonies.

Player owned bases for planetary interaction?

If we are going to be able to mine on planets and other goodies would a base for storage of said materials gathered be in order?

I for one am hoping for it because if we can store goods then haul them out from unpopulated space or as they said craft stuff then getting set up with your own hidden based would be a nice addition, even hauling NPC's out there to work with you, or have people you work with, I for one would like to join a deep space mining and goods cooperative even building and expanding a system so that the cooperative can gain max profit as people work to exploit systems.

Edit: seen planet coaster, if you can put together coasters why not colonies out in deep space, this would be great for group play.

This photo is what I hope for when planetary landings are done.

I'm hoping they let us build bases upon scapes like this.

Yes Iam also really hoping it has Combat land vehicles(even if their NPC Only) to destroy and am curious what Fortified Settlements entails.

Is that picture from Space Engine? I'm secretly hoping E:D will take some 'inspiration' from that piece of software, you can stumble upon some great sceneries there whenever you go to the surface of a random planet.

Maybe Frontier and the guy(s?) developing it should talk with each other...

Also I see in that picture we are assuming there is the same mixture of oxygen and nitrogen in the atmosphere as there is on Earth. Hence the 'blue' sky.

Most planets will not have the same mix so therefore the colour of the sky will be completely different from planet to planet, that have atmosphere.

That one has an atmosphere. So it won't be out with this Horizons... probably have to wait a whole nother year for that. :/ Understandable but unfortunate.

Maybe. What is clearly out is atmospheric flight. Its possible that an optical atmosphere would be included. For example, Pluto has an atmospheric pressure of roughly 1Pa, compared with about 100 kPa for earth. So I think the aerodynamic effect scales to a flight speed ratio of around 300x.

If Frontier pulls this kind of quality with the planet surfaces I will buy the expansion in a hear beat. but judging how planets looks like right now I think there is not much hope for THAT amount of details. Still that's my speculation after all the graphical hmmm "changes" lately.

It shouldn't be too difficult to achieve the level of detail in that pic - once you have a basic height map you can use Perlin Noise equations or similar to fill in the detail in a convincing manner. I helped write a piece of code which did this in a flight sim and it was only a dozen lines or so long by basically placing interpolated random height points in the existing height data but limiting the random numbers generated dependent on the existing slope i.e you got more rough terrain detail generated on steep terrain and gentle rolling terrain where it was not so steep. This egnerated some very realistic looking additional detail for very little effort.

The big trick is to avoid the kind of terrain (Level Of Detail) LOD popping you get in Space Engine's planetary terrains and I'll be very interested to see how FDev achieve this....

Question is - can Xbox handle this kind of procedural generation? - no idea really I`m not a tech guy. I hope it can.

Yes it should be able to no problems - PG is about the "cheapest" form of environment generation out there in terms of CPU/Data requirements, but its probably the hardest to achieve, as it deals with abstract equations operating on the "right" seeds rather than hard data like grids of points.
