Hi, I am thinking of getting a Thrustmaster, BUT:
I see both the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas X and the Thrustmaster T-Flight X - apart from the obvious difference in the throttle, the non-throttle version seems to have a LOT of buttons, whereas the Hotas-version only has a few. So why is everyone chosing the Hotas? Does it make that much of a difference?

Looking at a photo of the throttle-less version, I'd say it actually has the same amount as the HOTAS. From the perspective of having it in front of you ready to play, the throttle version has three buttons on the right hand side, one on the front and two on the rear face, plus you have a rocker switch and the throttle itself. Both versions also have the mapping and preset buttons, albeit in slightly different places. From what I've seen there doesn't appear to be a huge difference in price, so it likely comes down to choice. While it does have one or two shortcomings, it's great for the price and I personally love my Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS.

Thanks, Sealurk. I was surprised you said the same number of buttons - but then I found this little sheet. You're right about there being the same number - both have 12 buttons; so I now have a third contender.. the T.1600M; that one has 16 buttons -and it includes presets for Elite. Lacks a throttle, though.

I recommend the T16000M, a great joystick for the price. It does have a small slide at the base of the joystick that can be used as a throttle, plus nearby buttons that can be programmed for FA and Boost for combat. However, I recommend that you eventually add a CH Pro Throttle. With that joystick and throttle, it has enough buttons to do everything I need.

"Other."

I us a Logitech Wireless Gamepad F710, but would prefer my Logitech Cordless RumblePad 2 if it still was working for full range axes control which the round analog sticks aren't really capable of.

At any rate, using a game pad type controller works quite well for me, after taking a bit of time setting it up. I use the sticks similarly to using high end radio controlled airplane gear, the direction pad for thrusting up, down, left, and right, and use the buttons for power distribution. I also have additional buttons including a "shift" button set up for combined button control functions. This lets me easily have all the main control options within quick reach.

Can I use 2 joysticks at once?

So I bought myself a cheap HOTAS (Speedlink Black Widow) at the beginning of the year to play E:D. I've bound thrusters to my numpad to assist with docking and low-speed maneuvers.

I'd like to improve my setup so I have easier access to thrusters in general flight and I'm thinking maybe getting a second joystick to put alongside my HOTAS so I can switch my left hand rapidly from the thrust lever to a second thruster-linked stick as required.

Would a second joystick be recognized by E:D? What do people think about this kind of setup?

Dual joysticks work fine -
I had my old MS Sidey PP Joystick and added a Thrustmaster 1600m (for left hand) - I like the dual joysticks - Think they work pretty well in dogfighting. That said - I mostly use joystick and keyboard for supercruise and landing/takeoff.

The Landing and takeoff especially because of the micro control you have with keyboard thrusters. I don't know about other people but that is how i use them - hope it helps

Cheers

Dual joysticks is great but I absolutely have to recommend joystick+mouse. It takes a while to learn how to use a joystick in your left hand with any kind of precision, but bind headlook to your mouse and you have an extremely effective combat set up. You can follow your target all over your canopy, and working within the HUD is really smooth and simple.

I've just started using two joysticks and it is excellent, I personally don't have a throttle and have just bound throttle up/down to the joy stick hat. LH joystick has all six thrusters bound to it, I use twist for forwards backwards, and it has made combat so much better.

I was thinking about getting a T16000 would you recommend? Currently using some Mad catz thing from PC world I've borrowed.

Is Mouse just headlock or is it bound to movement as well? sounds interesting!

One problem with doing this is that you end up with poor lateral/vertical thruster control (speaking from experience). My combat performance actually improved when I switched to an Xbone controller for couch play.

If you have a whole lot of buttons on your mouse, though, you may be fine.

My right Joystick has all the standard controls - The left i have vertical and horizontal thrust with the forward and backward on the hat.

I like the T16000 It has good weight and feels good in hand.
Its a little stiffer than my MS sidewinder - I think the springs are a little tight. - but just takes a little getting use to.

Cheers, I use a sidey right hand too, great joystick and built to last.

Serious joystick for serious gamers [Humour]

Just ordered myself a new joystick for my double joystick set up and had this amusing 'also buy' on amazon:

For when you absolutely cannot stop farming RES for more than 5 minutes.

I shouldn't temp fate but my MS S-ff2 is now 13 years old and still functioning perfectly after years of various IL-2 variants and my Harmless to Elite combat career in ED. The Sidewinder 1 often fell apart and Bill Gates instructed the MS hardware division to make the successor virtually indestructible to regain reputation for the company.
I have 3 spares too acquired this year from Ebay. All functional.
