The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

I don't see the confirmation in my reply. I asked if the poster could post links to the tech described and that I personally don't know of any tech out there that does this in real time on a planetary scale. I'm saying nothing about what we're doing.

I was more interested in why a lack of such features would indicate our development team were below average in ability (which could be seen as quite insulting really) and that by implication you can never have interesting looking terrain with just heightmap and texture based variation.
Mike, I'm actually shocked you'd ask such a silly question. I thought you'd know by now that most of us forum members are significantly more knowledgeable than the FD team, in pretty much all areas of programming. One thing we all know for sure is that everything you're doing is quite easy, and therefore should have been completed long ago (oh, and bug-free and free of charge to boot).

Yes, and it's only because we're a bit busy this year that we haven't already made a much better game all on our own.

Nope, real-time.

Edit: Sorry, the cave is @ 1:57. Also what appears to be an underwater cave @ 5:05.

Cool video, thanks.

I'd guess it's probably a bit easier doing procedurally generated terrain when on foot rather than in vehicles. If a character is walking at ~1m/s then you have plenty time to generate the geometry/load textures, whereas in a Scarab at 100m/s it could be a lot more challenging to do without a LOD pop-in.

The sarcasm here is lovely this time of year, almost worthy of the complaining naysayers, but alas the pinnacle of their ideals is based on their own personal vague, unintelligible imagination.

And here I was hoping for a conversation about what's going to be in Horizons. My mistake.

They seem to manage the overhangs just fine when flying past them in the ship. There are lots more videos out there, but this being the ED Forum I don't want to spam them all over the place.

IGN, a site I don't normally bother with, has a series on the game which is pretty informative and shows at least one more cave.

Have a look for yourself, if you're interested :)

Hmm...cartoon with caves, or proper game without them ?

Seriously?

Gameplay versus graphics?

No contest.

Don't get me wrong I really want ED to do well, but comments like that.....

Just no.

Braben wants all of that, its everyone´s dream, it will come down to the technology available and having the funds to make it happen!
I would kiss David Braben's ring and pledge my loyalty to ED to support expansions if I can build my FORTRESS OF DOOM upon a black lava rock planet WITH THUNDER AND LIGHTNING and have flying dragons that attack would be interlopers FIRE and BRIMSTONE.....but really, I'd settle for the ability to settle upon a planet in my industrial hanger and a cup of Earl Grey.

Which one do you consider as "gameplay" and which one as "graphics", since both have both ?

Do you think this level of nitpicking adds to the conversation, or is really even relevant to the point they were trying to make?

If graphics' stylizing is more important and you think it isn't being accounted for fairly enough, then just say that.

I'm not saying anything, just thinking out loud.
But if you must know, I don't care for NMS or its caves.
Now, do you have a problem that I'm unaware of ?

Fair enough. Personally, I think NMS is kind of cool and is a fun game development venture, helping to push the limits and possibilities of the industry forward. That being said, I care more about ED and where it's heading, since I very much enjoy playing it and have fully bought into it. I also enjoy the more realistic rendition of our Milky Way galaxy.

Do I have a problem (or problems) that you're unaware of? Hmm... quite possibly, though I'm not sure how relevant that is. :)

Caves certainly can be added and generated trough PG, however as Mike pointed out it will be interesting how such generation can be done in ED, as ED does it all by science. I hardly doubt that they will arrive with first iteration as airless planets mostly doesn't have such caves.

Lava tubes? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lava_tube
Outside of the ones on earth also discovered on Mars - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martian_lava_tube as well as the Moon https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_lava_tube

You drive the buggy from a first person perspective but no it doesn't mean walking around in first person which I think is what you meant.
Naturally, the thing we (I) wanted most will be added still later and for still more money, I am close to shelving this game until they get their act together and complete the game as it was envisioned with all the content and finished graphics in place. Say 5 or 6 years at the pace they are making now?

The walking about implementation was always going to be an expansion (separate from the planetary landing expansion) and was always going to be paid for. Up until the announcement of Horizons, we did not know in which order the two expansions would arrive - now we know that planetary landing is first and walking about is later.

Which is logical to me. Get everything in place, then develop the mechanics to roam on two legs.

Hi its probably already been answered but I bought the elite dangerous premium beta pack. Do I have the lifetime pass that they are now showing for sale. If so it may be worth the shop when you are logged in showing that you own it as I can see some people being daft enough to re buy it or like with steam if its part of your package it says you already have it
