UA Mystery Thread 3: The Canonn

Thanks. I did note in the dev update thread Mr. Brookes said that something might happen to the moving station Jacques I believe. Also Ratking I think wanted to set up a 24/7 watch on the station I second that!

Hey now, the Dev update just came out this morning, and we find voyagers now? Seems suspicious, I'd bet they were missing until now.

And as for the test, if you have a better test I'm all ears ;)

If the voyagers were gone they would have required a client update to replace them. Probably this 1000 Ls detection thing went in in 1.3 and there were never missing, but even if they were they must have been restored in 1.3.08 or earlier.

So, if those are true, the UA isn't a treasure hunt, it didn't cause or cure the plague, there's no special deep-space destination. We don't even have a story or narrative *for* the Unknown Artefact. We can't find any in-game lore that references anything similar (beyond vague OH NOES A-LEE-UMS!), there doesn't seem to be any official novel tie-ins & none of the F:FE links have panned out thus far. AND we're both close yet overthinking it.

So it's cargo. What do we do with cargo? We scoop it, buy it, sell it & deliver it. And as a collective, we've basically only managed the first one. Huzzah.

I'm going to stop tilting on the forums & continue toward HD 131336 with mouth closed & eyes/ears open.

Here, have a pitchfork 3----

So as I hate just sitting in one location for too long I'm going to make my contribution to the cause to look for SSSes in areas other than populated space and the Pleiades. I've hung out at the California nebula in various systems (less than 1000ly from the nearest populated system) waiting about 30 minutes for any signal source to appear. Nothing. I'm now out at the LBN 623 nebula (very pretty), which is well within 200ly of populated space, less than 6 jumps to the nearest station for my Asp. I'm going to wait here for a good long while and see if anything pops. Then I'm going to find a nearby B class star and see if anything changes. I think this will go a long way to adding evidence to the "specialness" of the Pleiades. Of course randomness being what it is I could just be having bad luck if I don't see anything.

I've also spent a lot of time in the California nebula region recently and not seen anything unusual or any SS. I think we can safely assume California Sector is too far out to generate SS.

I was staring at the Gal Map & thinking about what else we know:

* the UA are being delivered (likely) somewhere in the bubble
* we've found the convoys toward the outside of the bubble (Timocani & 109 Virginis)
* we've found free-floating UAs in the Pleiades (maybe natural spot, maybe not)
* we've seen the UA in the Wings trailer in the California nebula, headed bubble-ward

Probably stupid, but if you draw that line in order outward, you almost directly hit the "Trifid of the North" nebula. And it too has a line of the 2MASS stars next to it. In addition, "Trifid of the North Sector HR-W D1-8" has a big Class A star & seems to be the closest star to the nebula (none directly in it that I can find). 2.6K Ly out. Maybe, if all else fails, we should check there to see if there's anything there (SSS, PoI, whatever).

I came to the same conclusion and someone else (Nilreb, I think) also suggested a trip out there a few days ago. I'm already at the California nebula so I think I'll head out there just in case.

I think once 1.4 hits they won't need a client update to move Jacques' station. That should make it a bit more interesting.

No, like this: o7

I'm feeling very tempted to go and grab my DBX and head over to this Triffid nebula and look around. One question first though: What is the relevance of 2MASS to the UA?

Yeah, in populated space I usually see *SSes pop up even when I'm not in a system for very long. In Pleiades they pop about twice an hour on average it seems (maybe there's a some sort of inverse relation to distance and the time between *SS events?) Spotted a USS in LBN 623, but no SSS. Going to hang out here a while longer and see if I can find any and hopefully aa UA? We'll see.

I tried to make this my signiture.... something went horribly wronggg

point of note; the voyagers were in the sol system before- ver 1.1 or so- back then it was an "unidentified contact" that your hud would pick up if you were to pass your view over it- and it was targetable over 2million ls away. I went there back then- sat and listened to the "sounds of Earth" [or some looping personal message to whoever found it] crackling weakly over the comms channel... it was neat. sad. and lonely. waaay out there- yet nowhere really at all.

so the point is: dont think you need to attach any special new meaning to its existence. Its been Out There. this whole time. NOT a V'GER... yet.

We knew they existed, but they haven't been easy to find since 1.3. Thus the interest.

Taking my UAs to the Triffid Nebula. Anything special you want me to drop next to or check out? if not Ill do my best :)

Are you sure that's a good idea? ~2.5k LY with double the module decay?! You must be crazy, man.

EDIT:

There are two Triffid Nebulae. The one (I assume) you want is "Triffid of the North".

Yeah, of course. I was unaware there was any other, but that is the one I would head to. I just want to be a bit sure of the correlation before I trek rimwards 2.5k on a whim.

I cannot find any thing with name Triffid of the North. When I type in Triffid I dont get anything until I type in "Trifid" and thats a nebulae 5,000ly away

I'm staring at it myself, it's "Trifid of the North" and is rim-wards about 2.5k ly, and down a bit from the bubble.

wow could not find it no matter what using the search function. I had to find it by hand using your screenshots. after I found it it now shows up in search.... weird.

Oh well... this is much better than the 5,000ly trip!

Does having 2 UAs cause more damage? isnt it just one tick no matter how many you have?
EDIT: NM I found out having two does double damage. Ill hand my extra off to a guild mate before heading out. dont expect report till tomorrow.

This was my greatest fear, and one of the reasons I dropped out of the UA hunt weeks ago - that whatever the next step was, wasn't in the game yet.

I have always been under the impression that there is still something to figure out and that it will be big and have lots of "Fan fare". That the UA wasnt a "Red Haring" and that its been solvable since day one of 1.2

If it is indeed not solvable at this time and it is part of a future update then shame on FDev for not letting us know. We are going to be approaching 30,000 posts soon and if they are just letting us beat our heads against a wall then that will be disappointing.

They said at Gamescom that there is something to figure out and the story will "evolve" with Horizon. I guess you could say that it's unsolvable in that we can't finish it now, but there is still that first step to find.

this let me think of this, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Day_of_the_Triffids

Oh what the hell roast me but Trifid means having three lobes.... just like the UA

Just sayin`

Honesty is a wonderful thing. Even if you're not actively going somewhere in the game to "lend a hand" you can always still engage the heavy stuff in your head to think about potential ideas/solutions. Who knows you might think of something that hasn't been looked at.
