[learning English] What does fixed mean?

Genuine question - what does "fixed" mean in English?

Looked it up on Merriam Websters and it says:

—used to describe something that does not change

: placed or attached in a way that does not move easily

: having something needed

So why do "fixed" weapons wobble all over the screen in CQC? Not exactly an intuitive description in your language I guess. I'm certain the complete lack of understanding is on my end, but would someone care to elaborate it to a true moron?

The fixed weapons are "fixed" in CQC, because of the fast pace of the matches. Basically they have more 'wiggle' room than the fixed weapons in the main game.

Guessin: fixed more stable/less wobble, relative to non-fixed. Kinda like stone bein strong, comparin to wood.

Gimball weapon wobblin lot more dan fixed? Nat playin CQC atm...

It also means something that has been illicitly tampered with to produce an unfair result (as in a match being fixed). Perhaps that is the meaning they are referring to?

We shall try it in a sentience

They are fixed to a forward facing and a narrow firing cone, as opposed to the Gimballed and Tracking weapons that have a much larger arc of freedom of movement

Ah - so you mean anyone shoots anything and everyone hits something at some point without ever flying their ship in a sensible manner or aiming at anything?

Sounds plausible :).

It looks like you've already made a post about this in the CQC Beta forums and it got buried, sooo?

Mkay - you sound like a therapist. (I asked for an english teacher, but nevermind) - now would you call this a fixed or a gimballed weapon?

A fiixed weapon would be like the 2 x 13mm MG31 machine guns and 4 x 20mm MG151/120E Cannons on an FW-190. You point the nose at the target and shoot.
A gimballed weapon would be like the 7.92mm machine gun mounted in the nose of a JU-88. 1,000 rounds of lead; but only in certain directions.
A Turreted weapon would be like the B-17 with twin 50 Cal MG in a Sperry turret. It will have a better rotation and thus a better field of fire, but will only cover one side of a ship. Thus you have ball turrets, tail guns, waist guns, etc.

They either move on purpose, or they don't. If they are moving but not supposed to; wel then someone crapped in the laundry.

You're right. That sounds more like gimballed weapons in the regular game. I guess they screwed something up. Got their wires crossed, or used copy-and-paste while scripting mayThat sounds more like gimballed weapons in the regular game. I guess they screwed something up. Nope, they specifically stated that they tweaked the gameplay for CQC. Another reason to not have the ranking in the main game? :p

Fixed has always been a relative term. Havent you noticed in a stock sidewinder, with its fixed lasers, that the aim dots indeed shift and correct a few degrees this way or that- converging on a target, or snapping to a subsystem when close enough? [go ahead, I'll wait]

Since the CQC ships are not factory standard in any case, they can be though of as "supermodified" stock [racing] cars- designed specifically for the event. so yeah, they perform a bit differently (check out how fast an eagle can reverse!!)

Fixed weapon targeting subroutines and all. Compare how the NASCAR Thunderbird compares to any Thunderbird cars you see on the roads [uh- it doesnt].

Actually the fixed weapons in the main game have some gimballing too. In this context it just means (more) restricted movement.

I am sorry I am not an English teacher Sorry for wasting you time or answering the thread at all.
Good way of invalidating any answers you dont like.

But your own definition you got from you dictionary

"attached in a way that does not move easily"

Doesn't say does not move at all but does not move easily.

In your video the guns are fixed forward and doe not move easily as it is limited to a small cone

How about you tell us what you want the answer to your thread to be so you can then make your point and feel good about it, as it seems anything that isn't the answer you want is going to not be a viable answer.

The Fixed guns in the main game have a cone of fire, do you have an issue with that as well?

Could it be a comparative

Are we allow to use comparative now, or is all language require to only deal with absolute definitions now?
In which case you probably want to rewrite you OP

Maybe they just weren't fixed properly.

Sorry! There are no CQC ships, they aren't stock or modified anything. They are virtual constructs that only exist in VR, where the competition is held. It is all a fantasy, within a fantasy.
