It's damned difficult if not impossible to fully reconcile the classic "single-player in game time" reality of Elite and Frontier with the "multiplayer in real time" nature of ED, but that's about the closest I've seen. +1.

To all worried about spam in that kind of a chat - in 99,99% of games there is a option to hide chat from your screen. Buuut as said there will be no such chat in Elite so the whole debate is just... oh well.

That was more than enough reason for FD to not implement a global chat in the first place. :p

No thanks.
A main chat room would kill this game for me. I've been playing since beta and never had a use for a galaxy wide chat. It simply doesn't have a function in the game in my opinion.

That said, if I could turn it off permanently I wouldn't give a fluff if it was there or not. :)

Exactly. How would you implement that and keep it "Elite"?

Remember OP, this isn't an MMO, this is a sandbox with MMO elements. However, a heatmap of player activity as reported by Galnet could be nice.

its bad enough at times when in 3rd party chats in TS and the like......most peeps wouldnt have the courtsey to have push to talk......all you would here is static sounding music,tv,farting......in the background.

it would be a huge mess that no one would get a word in edgeways.....PP specific chat groups though...that could work.

Always fun to hear some guy munching down on his crisps whilst listening to music that's oddly reminiscent of someone puking into the mic.

i know its like they dont realise it........push to talk should be made law in any online game......voice activation simply is not good enough if your wife insists on watching the evenings worth of tripe on the tv

You wouldn't, providing an in-game chat you'd turn it into yet another MMO and completely destroy the very essence of Elite; that said, if the chat window on the main menu before you log in was expanded...yeah, that's okay - that's just a lobby.. but in game? A thousand times no.

This ^^
Im mellowing and realising that this is a MMO. I play open for the same reason it's a MMO. I do talk to people sometimes when I'm not doing anything like fighting or avoiding an interdiction. I enjoy the adrenalin of pirates and so on. OK ive folded with guilds finally, whatever floats yer boat. If guilds appear in game so be it. But universal wide chat unless I can block it for the typical conversation above, continually popping on my screen No way!!! see the !!!. I cant mellow on that case.

As long as they don't call them guilds ... *shudder*

This would completely destroy the realistic and roleplay feel of the game. No sorry.

May I point your attention to BUY GAME EXTRAS, within the Outfitting screen?

Or the Galaxy wide Galnet?

I'm all for this option, particularly if it is introduced with channels - powerplay faction group chat for each powerplay faction and system chat for in system communication. It would certainly make the world more alive - allow people to group up or ask questions if they wanted.

The option to turn it off means it should be a no brainer really. I am surprised it doesn't already exist but am living just fine without it.

It'd be nice to have it, but the technical limitations I'm sure would never make this a reality more so than those claiming something along the lines of "that is not Elite." Hell it took many months and many patches for us to simply be able to successfully PRIVATE MESSAGE FRIENDS in game without getting an error, to think FD could make it possible to have a universe wide chat is pretty laughable IMO. Chat moderation (brought up by a forum moderator go figure) would and should not be brought into the equation as it is no different than running into people randomly and chatting currently in game, if someone breaks the rules you report them and/or ignore them. The option to turn it on/off should suffice for you immersion breaking crowd.

But again this is all for naught, if you think FD has the reasonable capability to make a universe wide chat happen (or even multiple system) with the current server design you are kidding yourself.

I can't see a general chat channel offering any social benefit at all. Some sort of activity heatmap as mentioned, player bulletins, looking for wings/ mission partner combination is the direction I think they should head. And npcs can share the same systems, so if you're playing solo it's essentially the same experience.

Thank you.

I've been an avid role player in MMOs since the days when ISPs and games charged by the HOUR. I long ago learned the fine art of contextualizing the more game-like compromises that need to be made, as well as certain online behaviors common to MMOs of all genres.

In particular, I've never allowed the use of 1337 5p3Ak to bother me. I know dang well that it is used to irritate players like me, but rather than let it upset me, my policy has always been to treat it like a phonetic accent.

I am not against a global chat per se, but it has generally been a feature if MMOs that I've ignored in the past, and largely found irritating, not because of its nature, but because it drowns out more important communications. I've found that I miss about half of direct communications in this game already, primarily because there is very little dead time in this game to pay attention to that part of the screen. If I'm not in the middle of landing or taking off, I'm browsing the bulletin and commodity boards, shaving minutes off my Supercruise time by not using the "70% at 7" method, or plotting the route to my next destination.

Should global chat become a thing, I'll treat it as another new technology, and my character will hope that it doesn't become ubiquitous in the Galaxy. Because if it does, she'll have to find a more honest job, because there is no place for the Pilots Federation once the mega corps lose their grip on the free flow of information. Median wage in the Galaxy is 3 credits an hour, and she's used to making 60,000 an hour while still being free to do whatever she wants, and she could make far more than that if she wanted to.

Suggesting that the ability to communicate with everyone without using external tools offers no social benefit seems a bit of a push doesn't it?

Would be like saying the ability to see offers no sensory benefit. However I am not against your other suggestions; I think the community can only benefit from the inclusion of these options.

Don't know if you read my previous post about a bulletin board, what do you think of that idea?

The last thing I need when I'm 10,000 LYs out exploring, is the missus calling to tell me that I didn't empty the rubbish before I left.
