CQC Everyone is way above their level

I get the impression there are lots of people in CQC who are showing as level 3 for example, but probably have made it to level 30 in the beta.
I think I'm going to stay away for some time until I can reliably say that a level 1 opponent is a relative noob like myself...

Of course we're above our current levels. They deleted beta stats, but they cant delete our skills we gained in beta. Just wait 2-3 days while beta players rank up...

haha - that's what I thought too - or I'm simply too bad. I take the beating for now, learning from stupid mistakes, learn the map layouts and try to apply the tips Look Inverted showed in his 101.

I've had some very close and interesting fights in the past hour - everyone below level 10, and end of round scores very close. And it really doesn't take long to rank up - I've gone from lvl 1 to lvl 9 in that hour, and I suck at PvP - so many losses of spatial awareness followed by *CLANG!* <Spin...>. :D

who cares.... win or lose, its all great fun, and you learn a lot quickly in flying the small ships, esp with FA off etc.

learn the maps etc that way you will be ready to strike as soon as you get in a group of your level. its not like you lose anything by losing.

Yeah, I reached Rank 44 or 45 in the Beta.

Zoomed up to 15th tonight in about 1.5 hours. Can't wait to hit 21st so I can get that Rapid Cannon going again. BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

The question for the OP is: They opened CQC Beta(Gamma) to all players. Why didn't you install and try it out?

I think you will be perpetually disappointed if you follow this strategy of passively expecting the matchmaker to give you a good game. The matchmaker has no data about you and, when you return, will still put you in the middle of the skill distribution - alongside all the other people it knows nothing about. Some of these people will still be very good from main-game PvP or just kids with fast reflexes and you'll be outplayed.

I suggest you actively play and try not to get killed whilst observing what the better players are doing. Your battleRating will trend to reflect your actual skill and you will start to get matched more against similar players, whilst your skills improve.

EDIT: I made it to level 40 in beta but only had time for 3-4 matches last night, so I'm currently one of those dangerous level 3's out there - but by playing I will quickly pull up my battleRating and there's less chance of us bumping into each other.

I noticed they 'tweaked' it in the final patch notes. I hope it's not more of a ta ta ta-ta, ta ta ta-ta weapon now.

I get the impression that your CQC level is not indicative towards your skill, because everyone can level up. As for the matchmaking when I started yesterday, I was pitted against level 7 and 10 commanders from the off, so I assume matchmaking is looking at your stats before deciding where to put you. Well, that's what it looks like. :) Having a blast, even though I'm not a big fan of PvP!

I ranked up to level 24 in the beta, and finding the main game to be far less challenging. But that's to be expected until the ranking system starts to filter everyone and the matchmaking can properly kick in.
Currently it feels a bit dirty to be trashing noobs. Levelling up again pretty quickly though....

EDIT:
Does anyone know exactly how the matchmaking is supposed to work?
Will it be based on level, rank, stats, or some combination of the three?

Rank is not an indication of skill in CQC and we don't use it for matchmaking. We used something called a Battle Rating that we re-calculate in the background after every match, it's based on an Elo rating system. During matchmaking we try to pair you up against players of similar skill levels. When you first start you have a rating of 1400 because you have to start somewhere and we have no idea if you'll be good or bad, so it takes a few rounds for this to adjust to be more reflective of your skill level. So at Rank 1 you might go up against someone of rank 30 because they've played for a while but their Battle Rating has settled at around 1400.

That's how our system is designed and set up, however, during Stress test and the Preview Program players were struggling to find matches, so we expanded the Battle Rating brackets for matchmaking so you could find a match a lot quicker, rather than everyone sitting around in a lobby waiting for ages. In a lot of cases players ended up playing against much better players. We are contracting those brackets so you will be paired with players of a similar skill level upon full release.

Many thanks for the info. Have some rep.
I'd assumed it would be something along those lines, but I wasn't sure. It confirms why these early day matches have been so one sided though.

I was doing well last night, won I think 3 of 5 rounds and was around Rank 8 or 9, then a new guy joined with Rank 1; who won every single round from then on. On occasion he got 7 kills before others got a single kill. The difference in levels is crazy.

Very useful info, thanks.

I wonder if they'll ever have a competition based on Battle Ranking. If they have a knock-out competition I'd probably bottle it and lose :) But if it were over a longer period, I reckon I'd do better. Still probably average though.. :p

At the start it will be. Over time your skill level will start to flesh out more. Then you will be increasingly matched with players your skill level. Keep in mind though that you will always have an element of being matched with players way higher or lower in skill level with you simply so you can actually play a game in a reasonable amount of time.

Indeed. During the beta, I fought against a commander with a K/D-ratio of 19.0. 19.0!!!

This was so suspicious that I noted his name and tried to kill him in order to find out whether he was cheating or not... well, he died (this one time). Which proved the fact that there are some really awesome pilots out there...

This could easily have been me (CMDR Lengai if that rings any bells...).
But I suspect the same thing has been happening a lot, and will do until the matchmaking settles down.

Hah. I did likewise. Every time I saw him I made a beeline for him, and killed him twice if I was able to sneak up on him. But wow, sometimes even if I got the first few shots in he still turned and was able to destroy me - and when I respawned and immediately saw him again, he still managed to kill me in a few seconds. I'm "average", but not that average.. he must be cheating! :)

Not the same pilot, but thanks for the warning. I'll be hiding behind a rock waiting for you to pass by! ;)

Not sure of that. The matchmaking is . Just lost a few matches... I am level 2. Lost to level 12 and level 10 s ... Guess what?

Its not even been 48 hours yet. The system they are using for matchmaking(FYI, it isn't the ranking system, because that's just an experience bar that you get to reset over and over) will take some time to sort out the different player skill levels.
