This poll is impossible.
If I answer with No, what am I saying no against?
No against 'In favour'?
or no against 'against'?

Logically....

If you answer yes, you are saying you are either for, or against.
If you answer no, your are saying you are neither for, nor against.

Make sense? :S

I love boolean algebra, it may make me a bit of a freak, but a logical freak :D

Hardpoints deployed maybe?

Interesting... Only issue would be of course people deploying/undeploying their weapons to flick in/out of external view, which under your suggestion would be immediate?

Sounds contrived, but there does seem to be an exploit in there don't you think?

I'd love a more immediate flick in/out of external view, but I can't see a method of permitting it without creating an issue?

Want an external view? wait for the FPS expansion, put your suit on and go and have a look!

Job Done, problem solved - next issue please.

No thanks, you wouldn't drive your car from 6ft above and behind so the same applies to in-game... Let's keep it real people, it's not an arcade game... :)

While I agree that 3rd person view shouldn't be allowed in combat, I don't see any harm in having an external view in a non-combat situation. Not having external cameras is actually more unrealistic than having them. The ability to take photographs and videos without the cockpit in the way is a must. I think it would be great if a ship computer has a "library" with all our pictures and videos. It only adds to the immersion factor and makes the game a much more immersive and realistic experience.

Out of interest, with the behaviour and limitations in the OP, what do you see as the problem with the feature during combat?

And of course fully agree with you that an external view will only allow players to enjoy the game even more.

Actually that prompts an interesting compromise.

If there was a way to take snapshots/movies while in-game but not actually change your first person view (i.e. they get written to disk behind the scenes). Then you can look them afterwards on your desktop and an in-game viewer.

Sounds interesting - eg: Screenshot F11 without cockpit, F12 with cockpit?

I'll add a section to the OP for such things...

That said, I doubt many people supporting an external view will see this as a "compromise," as it simply doesn't let them see as much of the "universe" as they'd like to. ie: Watch your ship flying out of a space station from any angle, or admire the fleet of Anacondas passing by... With no interruption to game play/time passing.

That was my reasoned point: it fits with planned development, doesn't require any 'handwavium' explanations, can't give any advantages in combat (you can't attack someone if your not at the controls) and doesn't require any extra effort on the part of the development team as once they start work on the first person expansion 'mark one eyeball' isn't going to be a view that's left out. ;)

it does all of that while still allowing for an uninterrupted view of the universe and not risking any issues with advantage or immersion being broken.

It depends on the external camera, really. If it is not a rotating camera--if it just allows us to see straight ahead without he cockpit in the way--I see no problem in allowing its use during combat. But if the camera has the ability to take "selfies" and provides a 3rd person view, it might be a considerable advantage because your view wouldn't be as limited.

People want what they want. I myself don't get it. I'm happy in the cockpit with my headless avatar.
