The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

I wonder, and if not, it won't get better on more 'complicated' planets.

From what we saw in the dev videos on planets, I don't think they are optimized for low end systems, then again, who knows? Lowest specs that Elite supposedly run on include the GTX 260/AMD 4870HD, I don't see how those can actually run the game myself, but evidently they can.

Never personally understood people with the lowest possible specs trying to run games myself, if you want to enjoy a game, you really need to be able to run it properly, not 'Just Barely'. Sorta of like looking at black and white photos of Monet paintings, you can see the image but you totally miss the art.

Latest video of a couple Scarabs driving around on the planet was recorded on a machine with a GTX 770. Take that as you will.

It would be nice to at least have it configurable as to how effective you'd like the light filter to be from max (as it is now) to none at all although you would effectively be handicapping yourself in battles near bright light sources.

none at all would effectively be suicide. have you seen the film "Sunshine"?

In regards to that post about sunlight before it got merged:

I'm using EDFX which pretty much does this to a slightly lesser extent. Trouble is because it is a post processing mod, it also affects the in-game steam overlay. Avoid white web pages if you value your eyesight! :D

One idea is to have a scripting system so players can make their own missions and leave behind geocache type quests for others. Messages in a bottle kinda.

Why would post-processing affect steam? And where are you seeing steam anyway? Is it coming out of a geyser or something? (I'm not in the beta.) As an XBox player I guess we can't overlay web pages or install mods, but I've never seen anything that looked like steam except maybe when I blasted an ice chunk in a planetary ring with a mining laser.

Of course such a system would never be abused, oh hang on this is the real world --> implementation +1 second, obscene messages and impossible hoax missions flood the servers.
Also if payment was allowed it would soon get abused by gold farmers as a way of selling credits.
User generated content is always going to be tricky to allow in such a way to prevent exploits being created.

Sorry, misunderstanding.

I'm on about the software called Steam by Valve, the digital downloading and communication platform for games. Any game you bought through Steam, or any non steam games you add to your library, can use an in game overlay interface for communicating with other friends that have Steam and for browsing the internet without alt tabbing.

EDFX adds glowing effects to any bright colour it "sees" and because it can't differentiate between the game and Steam's UI, stuff like white webpages appear extremely bright.
I'm so glad the Elite forums have a black background otherwise I wouldn't be able to see a thing through all the glowing effects! :D

I'm not so sure. Look how asteroids and ringed planets changed, presumably for GFX performance.

^THIS^; I'm wondering about as well. You know; no matter what they say...,keeping the PC, XB1 graphically centric...

Well it's a nice start, a couple of things, "texture tramlines" these are a pet peeve, lots of games have this issue where as your distance increases, badly made seamless textures that are tiled(heavy) over meshes/terrains show these tramlines, you can see what looks like this in one of the images, and the other is the terrain looks a little bland, and while that may be due to this current planetoid, I'm expecting to see convex and concave terrains which produces cliff faces, caves etc...

Other than that, it's start in the right direction, may take time to perfect it, will have to wait and see.

Sorry, no caves procedurally; already mentioned.

people saying it's beta and basically "mock-up"...its two months from release....its doubtful its gonna look that much different when its out.
Yeah probably, but for a simple rocky planetoid it already looks damn good...

I just think it would be excellent if this is how and where they are first encountered. Some Explorer Schmo dips down onto a planet with an anomaly. They're half bored, as these anomalies are either worthless or interesting, but only for the photo album.

Then Bam! Thargoid base. They ignore him at first.. He creeps closer (let's hope for an intelligent schmo (although he'll tell us from the grave I guess)) and sees Thargoid Hubcaps all over the show. He runs, he's spotted, he escapes. Mankind knows about Thargoids. Thargoids know about Mankind (yadda yadda ignoring lore yadda).

How, and I am not one to use this word lightly, cool would that be?

Yeah PP and CQC would probably come to a halt, over this new event...and Code would probably have something else to do.

Just watched the replay of the live stream for the SRV, it was early morning in Australia.
Just a a few ideas.
1) Is it possible to have height above sea level so we can get a sense on how high some of the mountains and how low some of the valleys are in meters? For e.g. we know on Earth the sea is 0m and as you travel up mountains it can be 1000s of meters above sea level.
2) In the ships we have a system map, can we have a planet map and select a way-point and drive to the location even maybe add how many KMs to go?

Planetary landing - Cheap version.

It's not what you thinking...

BTW i hope google won't block my video. I just forgot to turn off audio recording...

Third Person View on Planetary Landing

Stumbled on this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5gb2XfjW0U. Nice to see the ship in third person and would be great if Elite Dangerous could have an option to view the procedure like this...imagine the experience with the quality of the graphics we have come to expect from FD. Watch around the 3.25 min mark when the ship goes into low orbit. Great stuff.

FD don't want third person mode, they fought for a long time not to include the debug camera mode. If you want to see things like that you'll just have to find a friend to fly with.

It was a bunch of beta/alpha/kickstarter backers who fought against the debug camera, not Frontier. They were ready to add a full third person view until players started throwing one of the biggest temper tantrums I've seen, saying that it'd be used to cheat in PvP and ruined their immersion because they'd be forced to use it if they wanted to compete. Most of those people play Solo now. Go figure.

Frontier compromised the Third person view with the debug camera by making it so you couldn't control your ship or get any HUD information while using it.

I think they got that one correct. I'm not a fan of 3rd person in flight games....it tends to look pretty crappy, regardless of the game...even SC 3rd person view loses something when you switch into it.

Now a rear view camera or switchable camera angles that maintain the first person feel...would be interesting...and would be equal to what this series offered years ago.
