[INDEPENDENT] Buckyball Racing Club

I'm not sure whether it is fitting to any of the upcoming races, but i highly recommend thinking about getting "robert aitken orbital" in firdaus as a stop... that coriolis is only 0,17 ls (!) orbiting from a gas giant, never saw a station that close to a planetary body, will lead to very interesting sc approaches in a race.

p.s. obsidian ant was covering that station in one of his videos, so i guess it's unique.

Thanks, I had been thinking about that after seeing the video. My thinking had been along the lines of doing a "Near and Far" warm up race at some point :)

I have most of The Mischief Mile sorted out now, I am just working on the blurb. I'll hold back on full rules until nearer the time ;)

I have created 2 banners, which one do you prefer...if any?

Option 1

Option 2

EDIT: I have tweaked Option 1 slightly following some feedback elsewhere

I think that I've been there recently, I'd certainly been to a station that was breathtaking as you exited the slot in low orbit over a very similar looking beautiful gas giant. I'd thought at the time that it would be a nice place to race to / from. Then a couple of days later I saw Obsidian Ant's youtube video.

I've been meaning to check my travel logs to see if it's the same place. :)

I like them both, but I also like #2 the best.

To my eyes, option 1 looks the most pleasing. If you increased the size of the Sidewinder slightly to balance the BRC logo, it would be perfect.

Thanks for the feedback :)

I have decided I would like to go with the following:

Let me know if there any issues with this :)

PS. The teaser blurb I sent for the website is as follows: "Can you fly across the most populated part of the galaxy without running out of fuel? Do you know where the Fuel Rat Mischief is based? Where do most Commanders run out of fuel in the galaxy? All these questions will be answered with this rat race from one side of civilised space to the other."

EDIT: Updated text to be centred based on robinjb's feedback below

March Event - SPRING BREAK TOURS, 3302

Hello, all.

I'd like to propose a race that would occupy the March slot of your schedule, although given its theme I'd actually like it to run as an open event from Feb 15 through Mar 31.

SPRING BREAK TOURS, 3302
Objective
Within a limited time frame, visit as many stations with Tourism economies as possible.

Qualification
This event is run in two divisions, across six classes.
DIVISIONS

  • Division 1 -- The Space Tours division, which only utilizes space stations for the event.
  • Division 2 -- The Planetary Tours division, which only utilizes planetary stations for the event.
CLASSES

  • Road Trip Class -- Pilot a Sidewinder for 1 hour.
  • Taxi Class -- Pilot an Adder for 2 hours.
  • Ride Share Class -- Pilot a Cobra for 3 hours.
  • Limousine Class -- Pilot a Dolphin for 1 hour.
  • Party Barge Class -- Pilot an Orca for 2 hours.
  • Cruise Ship Class -- Pilot a Beluga for 3 hours.
Rules

  1. Choose a qualification class and acquire an appropriately equipped ship.
  2. Pick a starting station with a Service economy and park your ship there. This may not be a permit-requiring system.
  3. Plan your tour route.
  4. At each station, take a screenshot of the Commodities tab to document its economies and the time.
  5. Return to your starting station within the time limit and take a screenshot to document your return time.

FAQ
Q: Can I start at a station with a Tourism economy?
A: If you start in a station with both Service and Tourism economies, it will not count towards your score.

Q: Some systems list a Tourism economy, but none of the stations there do. Do they still count?
A: Some stations have a secondary economy that is only listed on their Commodities screen, these are valid destinations for Division 1 events. However most of these systems have planetary tourism, so are only useful for Division 2 events. It is recommended that you scout out any such systems ahead of time, to confirm which is which.

Q: Does a system with two Tourism stations count double?
A: Scoring is for total stations visited, not systems. Each station must be landed at and documented separately.

Q: What about Phrekda and other systems that require a permit?
A: I'm happy to let people use their hard-earned rewards. If it's clear after this year's event that access to Phekda's tourism is an obvious lynchpin to victory, I'll happily revise the rules for following years.

Q: What if there's a tie?
A: A faster time will win in the case of a tie?

Q: What if the time's tie?
A: Everyone's a winner!

Q: Can I be a few seconds over the time limit?
A: No. If you exceed the time limit for your class the run is disqualified. You will need to try again.

Q: What do I do if I make it to every Tourism station?
A: Keep looking. With a large ship you would need to visit a new station almost every minute for 3 hours to do that.

Obviously, things might need to change depending on what's available in Horizons, as well as any other releases before that time, but that's the general gist of the event. What do you think?

Your banner looks great, and I'm looking forward to the race (dependent on exactly where in the galaxy I am at the time).

Hi Jhyrryl, your "race" looks really great, I'm sure that CMDR <--Lightspeed--> will be most interested! :)

My only comment would be that (because of the theme) the ship classes are more restrictive than we normally have for a BRC race. However without the option to add passenger modules it is hard to make an argument for an unlimited class.

How about a Sidewinder "Rickshaw class", maybe with a compulsory 2t cargo bay to ensure that there's room for a passenger. A Sidewinder class is very Buckyball.

I'd be very (pleasantly) surprised if passenger cabins and the other two specialist passenger vessels are released in time for the race unfortunately. From the old DDA discussion https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7216 and the fact that they've never added simple A-B passenger missions, it looks like FD don't want to add passenger missions until they've got complex branching missions into the game at least. And I don't think that the Dolphin or Beluga will appear until then. :(

Personally I think that they might hold off from passenger missions completely until after first-person walk around functionality is added, because having existing non-stasis passenger missions in the game would make it much more difficult to initially add this to the game. So I'm expecting passengers (and the two ship classes) to be mid-season updates during the season that allows walking around, EVA, etc.

--EDIT--

Apparently I can't give either of you more Rep just at the moment!

I originally considered doing an open event where cargo tonnage factored into a calculated score, and then decided it was too complicated. :)

Yeah, I ran the Beta Pill in a Sidewinder; am still a huge fan of the little ship. I considered doing a Road Trip class...but felt like I was bogging things down with too many options. It probably isn't a problem since two classes, and possibly a whole division aren't likely to be implemented for the inaugural run. I'll go ahead and add it.

I agree with you completely, here.

edit: I've added both Road Trip
(Sidewinder) and Ride Sharing (Cobra) classes to increase the number of lower-end options. Also re-imposed the "no permit-required starting systems clause.

Looking good mw_aurora, though id move the text right a bit so the title of the race is more apparently central ;)

Hi Jhyrrl, sounds good.. best not to specify dates just propose a race and then Drakhyr will ask you what dates you can do it. and we will fit it into the schedule if there are no objections. standard events are 2 weeks long. this is so everyone gets a chance to hold a race.. and we don't have too many going at the same time.
its a bit unorthodox as far as creating your own route. but it still fits within the buckyball style we are going for.
not sure I could do 3 hrs in an orca ;) but good your catering for all types with lots of classes.

theres a few buckyballers that seem to want to create some epic races that transcend the standard formula we run by. which is of course very cool.. but ill just say that any kind of forcing people into open or any kind of ship goes against the spirit of the club. which is trying to be as inclusive as possible. that's the reason we have solo options, regardless if the host never plays in solo . it needs to be done.

theres also been a prize given for the last race, and someone mentioned that if there was a prize offered itd get more people racing. my feeling is that we don't race for prizes.. imo keeps away any of the unsavoury types that are just in it for the money , I mean its easy to cheat as is.. with out an extra incentive , if you just want to drop 400 tons of platinum off with alot. whos going to win anyway... then that's cool. ;)

sorry to sound like some sort of moaning killjoy moral compass all the time, but someones got to do it.

I know, that's been bothering me too...but then the date overlaps the limpet...

Maybe reducing the font size on the date will work...

EDIT: updated the original

Understandable. My main objective here is make sure that students (and others) who are actively vacationing while on Spring Break, get a chance to run when their school is out. Those six weeks still don't cover the full range of dates that various schools use, but lines have to be drawn somewhere, and I didn't want to compete with Valentine's Day. ;)

I was initially thinking of this with a Gilligan's Island theme.

...a threeeee-hour tour.

I even tried throwing together some art with an Orca named the S.S. Minnow crashed on the beach. But I suck at art, even just editing.

edit: wth, here's my crappy art :)

I'm a solo player. I hadn't specified Solo vs Open because I prefer not to have an Open event, but some people would run that way regardless so I intend to just make it a 3rd axis on the chart of run options (i.e., each division / class combo will have its own leaderboards for both Solo and Open).

As for required ships...as long as there are *some* options, I don't see a problem when there's a story being told. And it's actually a very important design philosophy in games and other areas; restrictions breed creativity. If there's any desire for different events to feel different, then they need differences beyond length and station selection.

If I were running this event today, I wouldn't be able to afford the Orca...so I'm fine with not offering prizes. ;)

It's all good by me.

I hadn't realised that your dates covered six weeks, I've got to agree with Robin that it's better if you can restrict the event to a one or two week period to fit in with the rest of the calendar. That's one reason (the main reason) that I changed the format of the GalRally, to avoid hogging a large block of the calendar. It remains to be seen whether moving it into the background outside the normal calendar encourages or discourages GalRally participation.

Robin could probably turn your image into something awesome! (I absolutely loved the image that he did for ElectricZ) :)

Also once Horizons is out, there's a chance that you'll be able to find recognisable Orca wreckage planet-side to incorporate into an image.

As we get near to December, it's probably time to start thinking a bit more about the schedule for next year. With the Galactic Rally Championship running in parallel to, rather than part of, the main schedule, there are plenty of slots to fill.

The only committed ideas I'm aware of are:
Esvandiary's as-yet-unnamed race (potentially the first race in January)
furrycat's Turbo Hour (previously known as furrycat's race idea number two)
Jhyrryl's Spring Break Tours (possibly best scheduled second half of March?)

Later in the year, I'm expecting that the Kessel Run and the Bootlegger Challenge will both make a return.

Has anybody else got any thoughts of races they might like to organise within the first few months of the year?

Oh, and just to confirm, the schedule I'm expecting for the remainder of this year is:

When - What - Who
5-13 Dec - The Mischief Mile - mw_aurora
20-23 Dec - tbc (Festive Special 1) - drakhyr (more on this soon, for those who haven't been told about it already :))
25 Dec-6 Jan - My True Love Sent To Me (Festive Special 2) - drakhyr

I'm planning Episode II of the Kessel Run around May the fourth :)

Looking forward to all the excellent races. Hope I won't miss too many during my vacation in Jan/Feb.
