Fly hot CMDR! o7
Hot yes, but a good smuggler also puts in some preparation...

Ouch. Cargo Hatch malfunction. evil juice vented into space. run ruined

...

Second attempt successful :)
A LOT of ships at Kappa Fornacis trying to buy Onion Head, wonder what the Cobra thought when I zoomed past it like a lunatic in the slot. :D

Overall a rough run with still a lot of potential for improvement. But I also feel the Hauler really lacks the jumprange to play in the Champions League, especially once the cargo hold starts to fill up.
So for now I will be happy with setting the Hauler benchmark time at 1:03:32

On a completely unrelated note I wonder how much of this comes down to having the guts to fly an unarmed anaconda full of valuable goods through pirate territory while going full boost in and out of stations.

Of course there is only one way to find out:
- CMDR Jessica Lee
- Ship: "Udenheim" (Anaconda)

Now that ought to scare the Commanders trying to trade Onionhead at Kappa Fornacis!
Good luck commander! o7

Raiko,

I am off out for my first bash at the Black Riband this evening. Been looking forward to it for ages, glad the BGS is letting it happen again! I particularly looking forward to the Onionhead leg given the CG is in full swing!

Think i might have to put a side bet on with Little Nuk to provide for my insurance cover in case I don't make it back in one piece!

CMDR: <-lightspeed->
Ship: Asp - High Flyer

(side note : do i have to declare my intention again if it's with a different ship - i assume I do. how about a different ship configuration?)

So, APPARENTLY it is now considered a CRIME to UNDOCK from a station with full boost just because SOMEONE ELSE does not know HOW TO FREAKING MOVE:

and also it is apparently SOMEHOW OKAY for the police to SHOOT DOWN CIVILIANS after such a MINOR INFRACTION:

Don't see any times for the Adder yet, so I figured I'd give it a shot. Then people will have something easy to beat. ;)

CMDR: Birdnose
Ship: Adder - "Gravitas Catastrophe"

My unofficial time in the Adder was 1:19:24. There's a lot of room to improve on that with better flying (my supercruise technique is pretty awful) but I don't think there's much to be had by further min-maxing the loadout.

While there's obviously some additional weight that could be shaved off here, I found reducing the dry weight below 50 tonnes didn't result in fewer jumps on this route.

I managed to make a clean run with no fines...ironically, my practice runs, which used legal cargo for ballast, incurred several. ;)

Record Times by Ship Type

It's been a very busy weekend so far for the Black Riband, and there may be more to come with a couple of declared runs in progress. It must be pretty hairy racing into Kappa just at the moment with two CGs active, it was pretty packed at Bast when me and CDMR Alot made our runs, so the Lonegan Brothers definitely approve! o7

First up after a slight delay due to a bout of xeno-flu in the Lonegan household the excellent new record time by CMDR furrycat has now been added to the big board. Furrycat no doubt made some of his trademark smokin' hot refuels en-route and clocked a time of 55 minutes 24 seconds in the DBX "Black Riband" taking 25 seconds of the record to claim the Black Riband in the Black Riband. Well done CMDR! o7.

This weekend has already seen two class record runs, first up CMDR Jessica Lee set an excellenttime of 01:03:32 in her Hauler "Antonio Banderas", becomes the fourth CMDR to beat my original baseline time and proving that the plucky Hauler, a Buckyball favourite, is still a ship to be reckoned with in the Black Riband.

Arriving back at Weyl a few hours later CMDR Birdnose set a pretty damn awesome looking time of 01:19:24 in the Adder "Gravitas Catastrophe". I've got to admit that I've never actually flown an Adder, but I wasn't expecting it to see it sitting proudly above the Cobra Mk IIIs on the big board. I remember that Adders were "the smugglers' favourite" back in the original Elite, clearly they've still got what it takes.

Well done CMDRs!

Still out in space are CMDR <--Lightspeed--> in his Asp Explorer "High Flyer" and CMDR Jessica Lee going for another class record, and perhaps the trophy in her Conda "Udenheim".

The brothers approve, CGs add to the fun!

Many of the black market rare goods have had their stations made HQs for new player factions, so hopefully the situation with the BGS will calm down in future. The only problem that I'm aware of (which doesn't affect the Black Riband, but keeps a commodity out of the Bootlegger Challenge again next year) is an X-Box group based out of the Wolf Fesh station, who've chosen the wrong government type and probably taken that drug out of the game permanently.

(side note : do i have to declare my intention again if it's with a different ship - i assume I do. how about a different ship configuration?)
Yes, you'll need to declare your intent to run every time. Consider your declaration a challenge to any of our friends in the various player-pirate groups who might haunt these systems.

Pirates, murders, anti-smuggling vigilantes and scatchy station bumping types are all welcome at the Black Riband ;)

Ouch indeed!

I'm sorry Jesicca, but I fear that Little Nuk may well have paid off both that NPC in the slot AND the cops! :(

He will however rep you again as soon as him rep tank lets him, and he hopes that the little insurance payout doesn't stop you making a run. Fat Tony paid a fortune for a massive "ones who didn't make it" board, and it makes Nuk laugh that the board's not been used yet.

Last night's run was great fun and i got back in one piece - just!

Three toast rack slams and couple of hard landings and one CMDR interdiction made you much butt clenching! The CMDR was unsurprisingly at Kappa F. He opened up on me and i feared the worst. however I released the hail "I'm just Buckyballing" and he shut down and let me continue unhindered. Happy days.

After all that excitement I was gutted to get back the Weyl and discover, by some ridiculous mathematical error, I only had 31 tons of goodies. what a chump! ho hum it was a good run out in a shade over an hour.

I've got to admit that I've never actually flown an Adder, but I wasn't expecting it to see it sitting proudly above the Cobra Mk IIIs on the big board. I remember that Adders were "the smugglers' favourite" back in the original Elite, clearly they've still got what it takes.

They're a great entry-level ship for almost any occupation, really. Cheapest ship that'll fit a Size 2 mining laser (my original use for it); reasonable jump range for long-distance smuggling, exploring, or rares trading; and with upgraded thrusters can hold its own against small fighters. The tradeoff is they aren't especially good at any one thing -- most people fly one for a while and then upgrade once they've decided what to specialise in. OTOH, never underestimate the advantage of looking poor when you're waltzing past pirates. ;)

Two things that really helped were the 2A power plant and the 3A fuel scoop. Made for fast, cool refueling. Bit of a poor man's DBX.

I also feel the Hauler really lacks the jumprange to play in the Champions League, especially once the cargo hold starts to fill up.
Trade ships need big FSDs to give them any kind of decent range when laden. The result is that an unladen ship punches above its weight in a straight distance race. Witness two Haulers on the podium for the Kessel Run. As soon as you start to load it up the jump range suffers.

fast, cool refueling.
Cool? That's no fun.

My run is now uploaded. Looking back I'm not sure how I managed to win given the two interdictions, a faceplant into the station at Bast and misjudged approaches to every planet.

Nah, don't you worry about my Credits, I come from a wealthy family and can always beg for a brand new Anaconda as a birthday present. :D

However I do regard that shiploss as a "failed attempt" and will not try another run in the Udenheim for now. Eh, someone has gotta be the first for DNF as well, right? :S

Out of character: Racing in the Anaconda is fun for about 5 minutes, but after the novelty wears off it becomes really frustrating to hurl that stupid brick around. My intermediate times were better than in the hauler, but nowhere near the 55 minute goal. Undocking went surprisingly quick and hyperspace is obviously super-quick as well, but docking was problematic and supercruise broke my neck. But maybe a better pilot could do something there with the old snake.

After the quite successful Kessel Run, I've decided to bring my Cobra "Sorry Excuse" back to the workshop for extensive trials and reconversion....say hello to the shiny and rechristened "Millennium Faulcon" :D

...and let's hope the newly retrofitted hidden compartments under the floor will be put to good use, I had to go cheap on hyperdrive motivator parts to afford those ...

Intent to race:

Cmdr Aken B.
Ship: Millennium Faulcon
Type: Cobra Mk III

Let's see if I have what it takes for a smuggling career :)

EDIT:

Ouch. Cargo Hatch malfunction. evil juice vented into space. run ruined

It just happened. On the last leg back to Weyl. I came in extra spicy through the slot and slammed the pad at Weyl, only to find a COMPLETELY EMPTY cargo hold. I can feel the pain...
...BUT!
It's a good opportunity to retry the run, there's quite a lot of room for improvement along the way...always see the hold half-full!
