Playing Elite with Google Cardboard

I found this today, maybe someone is interested.

This works rather well. Exept for one thing. I cannot get Trinus VR to work over USB on the newest Trinus Server version. It works with the windows XP legacy version but when i try it with the newest or second newest release it gives me the error

"TGLIB:UNable to connect to 192.168.42.129
:System.Net:Sockets.SocketExeption (0x80004005): An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access restrictions"

And a broken Pipe java related error on my phone.

This seems like a permissions problem to me.
Does anyone know a fix for this.

Though i could just ignore trinus all together, use an OpenTrack UDP sender app on my phone + moonlight + lens correction shaders.

I thought this method seemed to not require Trinus VR but trying it without Trinus wasn't successful (believe me I tried). Thus it's included in my guide. USB connection isn't necessarily the best. A good WiFi signal produced good results. Although I do have wired connection between PC and router.

Trinus 2.0.5 is now officially released. Aside from other tweaks, the freetrack protocol should now work for 64bit mode (the dlls are now included). Also, it seems the re-centering flicker issue is not present, but can't quite confirm that's the case, given how elusive this bug has been. Worth noting that I have been testing with vsync enabled.

@Luke, did you accept the firewall exception permission when asked by Windows?

(sorry for the double post, couldn't see the first one, thought I didn't submit)

Top Shift 54 - Looking at Horizons through the Cardboard!

I took this colorcross for a trip planetside. This is using ED tracker until the Freetrack issue is resolved.

@ cptwhite

Steam (with Elite installed via Steam). There are hacks, but moonlight doesn't currently pickup non-steam copies of Elite as an option to stream at present.

So if I have the non-steam version of ED are there any other options? I was really looking forward to giving this a go until I read this bit :(

I followed the info on the OP and it seems to work ok though I don't have a cardboard viewer yet (on its way from amazon ) so it have to do some tweaking when I can actually see the pictures properly, but it seems to work software wise. .

I have a cardboard (Star Wars version lol) but the cant get the trinus PC server to work. Download the exe, run it, then it just stops and then disappears from the download folder. Makes me think it's getting blocked by the OS or something, but there are no popups/warnings or anything. Running Windows 10. Anyone else having this problem?

FOV is pretty low on my LG G3 (5.5"). I would recommend the BoboVR Z3 if you are looking for a cheap plastic HMD with high FOV.

OK, so my cardboard viewer arrived today. I tried it but it was not very good. I think I need to alter the resolution. Both my phone (Galaxy S4) and monitor are 1920 x 1080. When I start Trinus it says that I need to alter the resolution to non-wide screen, but it also says that it needs to match the phone, so I'm not sure which is the best way to go. Any suggestions?

Cheers

Hi to all,
I have the it working with a Vr box version 2 and the Note 4 along with Trinus vr and moonlight but the resolution is the problem. I can`t configure a custom resolution with my HDTV, Nvidia control panel is limiting my customization options after turning off DSR so I`m left with egg shaped planets, any suggestions. I`m running a GTX 970 G1 and a i7 4790K so i have a bit of horsepower, maybe i can adjust the lens in Trinus but I`m not too au fait with that part.

Regards

First to the OP, thank you for sharing this VR discovery with the community!

Based on this thread, I went and bought a headset (MyFoneKit VR for approx 50 euros) in which I can attach my Samsung S4 Active. I got both PC version and Anrdoid version of TrinusVR working fine together (and also ED: horizons to communicate with previous two). However I seem to have pretty blurry picture, and thus began to wonder about the resolution and other settings.

I read from the OP that the ratio for resolution should be 4:3. Currently I use 1024x768 resolution, which should be 4:3. Text is still pretty much unreadable when using this VR with ED. I would like to get it little bit better, so I can actually see the information in my ship's HUD.

So, if there are people who have solved this, I'd like to have some advice. My only problem is that VR view is blurry so that the text and details are pretty messy (as I mentioned, I cannot see the ship's information text on HUD well.

So basically my question is, which resolution I should be using (ED graphics settings)? My phone's screen resolution is 1920x1080.

I also appreciate any hints that would improve the VR quality overall. I have installed SweetFX files in my ED folder, but I am pretty much at loss what to do with them. As mentioned, I use TrinusVR.

Also, even my computer can easily run ED Horizons with the 3D option set "side by side", splitting the screen to 2 identical views and it runs smoothly. But when I view through the VR goggles, I can clearly see somekind of lag. Does this means that my phone cannot repeat the picture through the streaming as efficiently as my desktop monitor?

I just today bought the VR headset and installed all the software so I am still messing up with the settings but would greatly appreciate if anyone here with better experience can throw me any advice. Thanks!

Wifi streaming can be iffy, usb is the better connection. If you have an Nvidia card then moonlight is a better streaming option and you will find it in the drop down menu in Trinus and connecting via trinus will automatically open moonlight and you can start the game from there. Options in moonlight willl give you hd 60fps streaming but like yourself I am struggling with the custom resolution as my planets are egg shaped. I think the setup really only serves to give you a taste of VR and is not really a viable alternative.

I have AMD GPU and CPU and I run it through USB. Yeah, I think you're right, it only gives the taste of VR. Maybe the software will be improved in future to make it look bit better. I too have these egg-shape planets with my setup, and my Asp seems kinda funny shape too, short and fat, more than usual ;)

I tried those SweetFX files, but they caused my launcher to break up so I really can't say if they are any help.
