Horizons Cobra Mk IV???

For such a "crappy" ship it is a lot of fun to use. So much hate in this thread. If they buffed it, it would be way overpowered.

I agree - incredibly capable ship probably about on par with a courier - an already overpowered ship.
The Imperial Courier is a good ship but far from overpowered, knock out it's shields (which is normally not too hard IME - at least where NPCs are concerned) and it crumples like paper.
---
WRT the Mk IV it is basically balanced as it needs to be, increase it's capability and it would probably considered more powerful than the Asp Explorer.
---
The Mk IV is slower, less manoeuvrable, and lighter shields than the Asp Explorer but has more internal slots. In some ways the Mk IV is better balanced than the Asp Explorer, but could never replace it.

That's it in a nutshell. The Mk IV is a fantastic little short-range explorer, fillable with all the goodies you could possibly want but without a long jump range. I used it a lot for edge-of-bubble exploration when it first became available, but I'm currently on my way to the core in a 31ly Asp and the thought of doing it in that Cobra gives me chills. I suspect that's the case for most explorers.

Not all, of course. There are all kinds of ships out there and if you don't mind the short jump range the Cobra IV is arguably better than the Asp. But it's very niche.

As for the extra hardpoint and convergence, I think that's the real disappointing part of the Mk IV. The loss in manoeuvrability and the drop in boost speed aren't compensated for by that extra hardpoint. It's not a good combat ship at all. But because it's an exclusive, that had to be the case otherwise P2W.

But what if i didnt preorder horizons? I have both the base game, and the DLC, but i cant buy the Cobra?

not the mkiv. I can confirm that. You aren't missing anything. I have the viper iv, and still prefer my cobra iii to it. both of the mkiv ships just aren't agile enough to be decent combat ships. At least the cobra iv can be outfitted as an explorer or a pretty good trader (nearly as much as an Asp explorer or a T6 , depending on loadout, great for a rare commodity route). Could also make for a decent mining ship. Beyond that, the cobra iv just doesn't quite cut it for me, based on what I have seen. sure you get better hardpoint placement, but fixed weapons aren't a viable option. I guess gimballed weapons would be incredibly useful on this ship, but it has the same agility rating as the viper iv (4/10), and the viper iv is just to sluggish IMO to be a truly viable combat ship.

This is correct.

Yes , but I'm only in one ship at a time , and I already have 3 ships spread out across the known universe , wish there's a way of allowing NPC you hire or Player hire to transport my unused ships to a central point , otherwise I'm just adding too the spread of ships.

Ship follow .. surely ship computers are powerful enough too allow , one ship to follow you on auto pilot , to another station/system

Or

Transport hire...... NPC or players transport your ships to a station . for a fee

I've replied in one of your other threads similar to this one.

It's very likely the MK IV Cobra will end up available to all. There's a lot of negativity about it but really that's just opinion. FWIW I'd rather wait for the cash for a Type 6 (yes a Type 6!). Thing is that's just my opinion. It can be an amazing cargo ship for the price, sure it's not as swift or agile as a Mk III but it is a good ship.

So most hate it but some people love it, given FD's history it may well be available, eventually, for all.

Personally, I really like my Cobra MK IV. I find it very pleasant to fly and it is currently the ship I fly most often after the Conda. I use mine for missions and scouting and sometimes for hauling merits. It's kinda like a baby Python

How safe do you feel traveling in it?

As safe as anything else I fly which these days are the Conda, Python, and the Asp Ex a bit. I should tell you I fly all my ships unarmed and don't PvP or PvE at all
So, safe enough to take a few shots while high waking out, I take it. Yeah, that's pretty much what I was asking. I haven't tried the conda yet but I do enjoy the python. I find all slow ships susceptible to PVP ambushes though. I've had to give up cargo to pirates before in my Python (something I was fine with as it's much better than the rebuy screen). I enjoy a bit of everything and this includes pve and PVP.

Yea, with PvP I imagine it's different. For my play-style speed really hasn't been an issue with anything I fly regularly since I got rid of my T-9 and bought the Anaconda. I keep as many shield boosters on each of my ships as space allows and I rarely lose shields when I'm interdicted. The closest I've gotten to being blown up in a long time was in my Conda when some NPC interdicted me a whole boatload of times in a row on the way to a station and by the time I landed I was down to 8% hull (!!!) Of course, back then I was flying with 4A shields. These days I keep 5A shields on it

Oooohh...
The Mk IV.

When I ascend from what ever landing pad or planet; push the power to max and initiate the thrusters; I can mentally feel the wind in my hair and face.
Mentally I get pushed back in the chair and I just burst out of where ever I am at.
This is the Cobra Mk III.

The Cobra Mk III is Rock 'n' Roll!
Fun, fun, fun; before marriage.
Drunk with friends.
Life at the very start of the point where you realize you just learned how to live.
God smiles and laugh, in YOUR direction, when you ride the Cobra Mk III.
And if you have put on one of those good looking paint jobs you only can get to the Cobra Mk III, it looks even better!

The Mk IV gives nothing like this.
I have understood that many like the Mk IV just like it is.
Fair enough!
I, believe it or not, actually respect that - it took some time and thought.

But; I can't find that spirited springtime that comes with the Cobra Mk III, in the Mk IV.
Truth be told; the only other ship I know of that show such spirit is the Clipper.
But this is only MY opinion, of course! :)

Now, if it had a much bigger Frame Shift Drive...
But that's the problem: if it had a bigger FSD it would be the perfect cheap long-range explorer, supplanting both the Asp and the DBX and leaving every explorer who didn't pre-order Horizons screaming pay-to-win (or at least pay-to-explore-conveniently).

Personally I'd be happy if FD just unlocked the ship for everyone then gave it an FSD boost (maybe courtesy of an Engineer?), but then everyone who did pre-order Horizons would scream bait-and-switch. There's no way for FD to win on this one.

I'm not a fan of the Cobra MkIV but it can defend itself as well as all other ships in the 100,000 - 3,000,000 credit range.

Video below shows combat against progressively better PvE opposition

I took a long break from Elite, but found a free docked MkIV waiting for me when I came back. I sold it straight away as I didn't really feel like I'd earned it.
