also consider that
developing a game is not like to build a car,
there 's always something unexpected

I'm a software engineer, and spent some 15 odd years in game development prior to my current non-games role. The thing I hate most about the job is being asked for estimates!

I am thinking that the "Premium Beta to be tested by Alpha backers two weeks before Beta starts" *IS* Alpha 4.0. That statement by David, and Michael saying Alpha 4.0 is still a way off yet leads me to think Alpha 4.0 and Premium Beta are one and the same.

I have never doubted that Alpha 4.x is the Beta. What I can't get my head around is this:

If the plan always has been for Alpha 4 to be released mid-May two weeks before Premium Beta then why not just say that? Why beat around the bush?

Alpha 4 is a little ways away yet, we're still on track for David's last communication on the subject.

Michael

What "last communication"?

I'm guessing Michael is referring to the "two weeks before Beta-statement" you quoted above since DB has, at least as far I know, said nothing else about any build before Premium Beta. But in this statement he referred to that as an early build of Premium Beta, not Alpha 4. While still technically "accurate", this isn't really crystal clear, is it?

If this is the plan, then just say: "We are aiming to release Alpha 4 two weeks before Premium Beta. This build will then after bug fixes be the basis for Premium Beta build 1."

There done! I don't think anyone would have any (huge) objections against this AND it would make sense. :)

My guess is they were/are keeping options open. Maybe they would have liked to get something out sooner and soak up some more data from Alpha testing, but they have the window running up until the 16th to get Alpha 4 out then two weeks of testing to make sure nothing horrible is wrong with it so the Beta group can begin.

This.

It doesn't really matter. Alpha testers will continue to get stuff to test when it is ready. Beta testers will get something new to test on 30th May. That much I think we can be fairly confident about: it is a date they announced to the markets, so they will do everything they can to hit it, and there has been enough grumbling and discontent amongst the beta backers, that the last thing they want to do is annoy them any further.

Given that at no stage have FD said what is going to be in the beta, it could have virtually any content. We have been told the next alpha will have travel and trading, and be in a small area with 5 systems, and that there will be a full galaxy available to view, but not travel to. So the beta will have that. But even that is vague, as it needs to be.

Bottom line is that FD will release stuff when it is ready, and the label sort of doesn't matter.

Maybe, but they still could have said the same thing as in my example above. I hardly think anyone would have objected if we suddenly got Alpha 4 "early". ;)

Just came in this thread to see what time the twitch stream is starting.

First post - It still says thursday!

See this sort of thing irritates me, it would take 20 secs to correct that first post and make things clear for folk. I KNOW its changed because i read alot round here - but a casual visitor will not.

FD - do yourselves some simple favours for gods sake!

Personally I think they may have wanted to ship A4 in early May to the Alpha, but perhaps its just not up to the standard their aiming for? Things get shifted around during development. I remember the store said early May for Alpha 4 and then it changed to May.

Patience, grrrr I have little lol.

Thanx...fer info.....im among those feeling a little dissapointed about A4.0 ambiguity....but then I started mentally comparing the updates and feedback from FD compared to the dears at Cloud Imperium Games...n ive decided to cut FD some slack :p
(just to clarify, the FD guys deliver big time by comparison! Go FD! LOL)

Well, we know alpha 4 deadline is 15th May, and premium beta coming on 30th May. Anything else is just twitchin while waiting :D

Adam Woods on Twitter just posted this:

"It will be Alpha 3 tonight but with Michael Brookes as the special guest, there might be some 4.0 gossip! @tonyhughes50s @EliteDangerous"

Disappointed.

I am good with Alpha 4.0 gossip and Alpha 3 play :p
Would have been harder to watch them play Alpha 4 with the knowledge that we can't get it for another week at least.

If they are playing on the regular servers lets try to find them and wave into the camera :D

"Am I on TV now?" :p

Don't get me wrong...compared to pretty much every other KS I have backed FD is absolutely stellar in terms of info and updates. I guess that is why the unclear parts and "blunders" stand out so much more. Me being obsessed by the game probably doesn't help either! :p

Only Double Fine beats them in my book, but since that project partly was meant to be a behind the scenes documentary that is no surprise. ;)
