UAs, Barnacles and other mysteries Thread 8 - The Canonn

Probably won't be in game for a while, but a wild UP hunting strategy I came up with would be to start at the outer edge of the UA shell, then plot an economical course from there to Merope (or Maia) and spend a few minutes in each system looking for USSs. The theory being that UPs might follow the same order of events that UAs did. First convoys, then free floaters near the Pleiades, then a shell. Thoughts?

Seems a feasible strategy. If the UA are long-distance sensors/ distress flares and UPs are short-range high precision sensors/map message in a bottle, then UPs should be nearer to Merope 5C, and possibly significantly closer (like within Merope system, or adjacent systems) .

Hi,

can someone tell me which program I have to use to get the spectogramm? I´m no sound engineer but I want to analyse this too. If there is a tutorial thread a link would also be helpful. Thanks in advance!

Use Audacity (freeware). Open the soundfile, click left on file -> spectogram.

The problem is, that we're extracting the data from the source audio using a logaritmic scale (actually I find Audacity's MEL setting better) so there will always be some kind of distortion on the angles. We can only get approximations from the data we have.

If it all lined up nicely, then everything would be distorted. The ellipse, the grid, the angled lines, all of it. But here we have distinct grid lines, and there's no way to get an ellipse to fit using the center of the grid lines.

I've gone through Kerrash Landing's video and at around 1:02:45 he states that we found barnacle sites by enhancing the contrast of pictures of planets and were able to see an "X" to mark the spot where they could be found.

https://youtu.be/3QDRdbcYGGs?t=1h2m45s

I don't recall this being a way we found the barnacles (we'd be using it now if it were true, surely?) but as these threads are colossal, searching has been difficult. Can anyone confirm?

Of course, if Kerrash is being economical with the truth here, then perhaps we can discount his statement regarding the crashed alien ships, too?

Somebody did that AFTER we found a barnacle, and found an X over where a barnacle was already known to be.
Has anyone found any other X on any other planet, much less found any other barnacle with this method?

Audacity is a common and free audio program. A spectrogram is a common thing that any audio editing program will have.

Hi I've been trying to join this discussion for some time now.
I'm aware that folks can get 'thought blinkers' on but could somebody please help me try to contribute something to this?
I have been trying to upload an image I thought may be helpful. If somebody could please help I'd really appreciate it.
I have an image saved in the correct format but the forum keeps saying the file is invalid.
If nobody can help I'll leave you guys to it.

From my image (when I can post it) and looking the spectogram I reckon the spectogram is four parts that line up. I reckon that that the image lines up to a group of stars and that once the images are lined up in the correct orientation we'll be pointed to somewhere. I could be entirely wrong of course but I'd like to post my off the cuff musings anyway in case it sets somebody off thinking about things differently.

He is paraphrasing someone who saw geological features on a planet, .... one of the barnacles. I can't remember which atm. Somewhere in Cannon#6 or #7.
You can hear how he explains it - he is relaying or paraphrasing what he read somewhere, forums, reddit, twitter etc.
You never know who & what he is referring to as regards to what he has read, and how he remembers it.

It's not true for all the barnacles, no.
And keep in mind, he's running a show - it's valuable for him to mention these things. It brings him audience. He doesn't have to prove it or reference the source due to the entertainment format.
Please don't take rumours seriously. Use it only for what it's worth .... rumours and hearsay.

I totally get that, and take pretty much everything he says with a very large pinch of NaCl! I'm merely following up on a previous post that mentioned his comments regarding crashed alien ships (he re-iterates this claim toward the end of the video) and found this particular comment quite specific, but not true as far as I knew.

Register with Imgur and upload there. attach the photo but as a URL link and it will be on the post.

I've posted this before but I feel the need to post it again. I want to encourage everyone to take the time to read this. It is a very good insight into the thought process of these kind of messages.

I can't stress it enough. If we are to solve this (provided there is something to solve) we need to approach it with a defined ruleset supporting our lines of inquiry. Just as LordZoltan said before, without a specific methodology which prevents rampant speculation all we'll manage to do is to fill time until FD throws the source of this in our face with one of the next updates. Reading this and similar documents is a very good starting point in developing this methodology.

Apparently xcyber posted a more extensive explanation for the Evpatoria message before in the thread and I missed it. Here it is once more for visibility http://www.plover.com/misc/Dumas-Dutil/messages.pdf.

Very true, and in thread #7, I mentioned this very anomaly with the misaligned grid and think it may be that we're looking at a depression, possibly even a crater, especially as my main area of research has been around the prominent crater on Merope 5c.

I did post this in a previous comment but it got lost due to the sheer volume of comments, so started a thread over on Reddit:

The 'honk' is already included in the recording and shows on the spectogram as a very simple pulse followed by a continuous strip. The very beginning of the long spectogram on the first page starts with the honk.

Thanks. I was hoping there might be some kind of greeting - response pairing; something specific the probe responds to rather than simply blasting everything that scans it with this message.

Really?
I think the obvious difference between the top and bottom pair casts significant doubt on them being part of the same notation.

Seriously, if you were sending a message, why would you use two different fonts unless there was some significance to it?

Let me say I'm 100% with MadDogMurdock here, and if you check something like 7000 post back, immediately after the first binary interpretation of the symbols, I've immediately raised the same objection. And the difference in spacing is VERY CLEAR.
And it is even easier to note it, because the two pictograms on the left side, the -|- and the | - - are composed by the same "dash'n dots" EXACTLY, that are one | and two -, so their length, the pictograms width, should be exactly the same. That is not. And the left and right margins of the 4 pictos are perfectly aligned, so please, don't tell me there is a distortion.

MOREOVER:
it really is a misfortune, IMHO, that the interpratation of 3.142 is, by misfortune as I said, made of the same four numbers that make the most basic sequence in the universe, I mean: 1,2,3,4.
Really, why is there a need to let us know Pi ?! What use can we do of it?

It's not a real message from Aliens: it's David Braben and Michael Brookes fooling us with a riddle :D
Those pictograms, being either in a group or four, or two groups of two, mean something else.

I meant to comment on your last post about this. I have a feeling this has got some legs.

I agree wholeheartedly.

The bottom row being some kind of a (| - - - - |) being a kind of boundary to define the meaningful part of the message is a likelier to me than they are numbers, because of the above-mentioned facts in MadDog's post.

man, I posted more explained version of Evpatoria few pages ago. Please read thread better. So, posted again: http://www.plover.com/misc/Dumas-Dutil/messages.pdf

I'm going to disagree on the sizing of the pictograms argument mainly because the image is being warped along a logarithmic scale there are bound to be discrepancies in the sizing. The shape of the circle ... etc...

The top pair uses wider dashes and narrower spacing than the bottom pair.
Makes no sense if they are supposed to be part of the same notation system.

I don't think they are.
On page 3 of this monster thread I posted a solution, with coords, that works off the theory that the upper hemisphere tells you how to read the circular template and also orient yourself on merope 5c.
The lower hemisphere gives the coordinates.
The "1" and "2" of the top quadrants are exactly that and to be read in order. The bottom quadrants indicate they are two halves of a pair...of coordinate's and how to lay them out to read them.
Although I didn't go into that much detail on page 3, that's how I pulled the coordinates.
It covers a very big area though!
