My most basic interpretation of the symbols

So if you're right about about r=1 and the others being a lat/long/alt then it's for example:

1 radian lat, 2 radians long, 4 planetary radii altitude

or about 57.3deg by 114.6 at (on Merope 5c) 5.9Mm (or 4.4Mm if it's from centre-body) altitude, from an unknown zero point.

(EDIT: duh, 2 rad lat 3 long rather, so 114.6 by 171.9. My excuse - I'm buckyballing back from Jaques as I do this..)

That what you're getting it?

If r=1 then there's something more important, which is that the trig mathematics required to work out other things around the circle become a lot simpler - because it's a unit circle: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unit_circle

I'm not the first to refer to that - but the question is how *useful* it is. The same is true for interpreting it as heights or angles of periapsis or whatever :)

Hi, another idea.
I hope nobody else posted this before...

Surely you know the game "Simon" with the 4 colors and you have to press the right colors in the right sequence.

Following things have to be done near Merope 5c

I-- = 1st e.g. make a Detailed Surface Scan
-I- = 2nd make a Discovery Scan
--I = 3rd ? I don't know, perhaps the chaff launcher ?
.)) = 4th use your ECM

Till now we started with the the Discovery Scan and the Probe told us we are wrong. Like the noise of this old game told us when we pressed the wrong color.

I don't have a probe and i don't own a ship to mount all these tools :(

Well, that's nice :)
The part I prefer is that perhaps the UP is truly telling us "Hoooooooonk, I push you back! Wrong sequence! Try again!"
Anyway, many scanners have already been tried and they have the same effect on the UP... I mean, one at least, should trigger a "right sequence" reply at least...

Hey everyone,

Im sure many of you have seen this but i want it to reach as many people as possible so im posting it here in the UA, Barnacle thread. Here is my guide to every barnacle site. it shows system data and more on every known barnacle site. hope it helps explorers everywhere!

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/275816-what-you-should-know-about-barnacle-sites

Good work!
I'll put the link on the Barnacles section of the FrontPage, useful tools.

The Hydrogen Line (1420Mhz) as a Key?

Given: The Hydrogen Line has been used as a key before in our attempts at communications with other extraterrestrial races as it is an easily observable phenomenon.

Given: The Hydrogen Line Freq is 1420.405751786 Mhz (or Million Cycles / Second)

Observed Top Freq Hz of signal =~ 14204 (HFreq / 1,000,000)
Observed Bot Freq Hz of signal =~ 1420 (HFreq / 10,000,000)
Applied High/Low pass filters to visually confirm nothing went beyond this range, and seems to fit within that range

k0mYLwa.png

(Note: I am no longer justifying my use of Seconds as it applies to the Hydrogen Line, just assume that the 1.420s ratio is a ratio cycles of the Hydrogen Line Freq, not just aliens conveniently using "Seconds" - it's a mathematical/cosmological ratio that applies here)

1st Static Set - It's the equivalent of a "MARK" or "Start of Message" ~ (approx) 1.420s inside silence duration ... but it's hard to see start/stop of 'silence'

2nd Static Gap silence length = 1.420s (just the silence, NOT including the static)

Hypothesis: Silence between all markers is a "ratio" of Hydrogen line to integers or some well-known numbers which will provide other keys.

Overall Message Length between "Start/End" Static (not including the static itself) ~ 11.36s (1.420 * 8)

Inside of "Center/Globe" Panel length is 2.84s (1420*2)

Inside Diameter of the "Silence" of the "globe" is ~1.420s (not including inside lines, but obviously ignoring "grid" noises)

(Note: that means Radius is not .75 like I previously said, but .710 if this pans out)

Inside of "Left" Panel is ~ 2.230s [2.230 = 2(1420 * Pi)]? (maybe a stretch since it really measures a tad beyond 2.23s)

Inside of "Right" panel is hard to see due to trailing static, but is ~3.03s
(Can't find an applicable ratio of some mathematics number here - which is why I'm posting here of course)

So... am I making the last two observations "fit" or is there something to this?

a unit circle

Yeah, that notion has a lot going for it in terms of a logical presentation, radians being a very natural unit. But as you say - there seems to be enough ambiguity in the picture that, even if it is true, it's hard to get to wherever it's pointing.

But I find the notion that one of the figures is an altitude interesting, and again body radii would be a logical choice - because it could imply non-Horizons players can get there too.

Hah I really like this one. It's testable and besides the UP doesn't need too much schlepping around hoping.
only thing, you can't make a DSS, it's not a trigger thing.

Not criticising you here, because you're definitely not the first to do this - so please don't take this personally.

If we're going to randomly assign actions of our choosing with absolutely no logical reason informed by the image itself to the numbers 1-4, then we can choose *anything*.

e.g:

'|--':'scratch your back', '-|-':'I scratch yours', '||-': 'eat some fish', '--|': 'wash it down with gravel'.
'|--': 'you have two cows', '-|-': 'you live in a surrealist state', '||-': 'The government orders you to become a mermaid, '--|': 'and take harmonica lessons'.

They are both valid, and both equally useless.

If it's a message for us to understand, it wouldn't include completely ambiguous symbols that require us to dream up one of a number of different actions we could do at any given time.

If it's been constructed properly - and I'll wager it has - then each step should lead on to the next and not require us to dream up some magical set of things to do.

NOTE- besides the hydrogen frequency, you could also say the unit was "the frequency of the transmission" (which was chosen on purpose to be the same as the hydrogen line. So if we ever run into a frequency in a galnet post or tip off or wherever in the game, that might be good to use too)

Well what about its also about timing?
The UP lights up periodically and honks. What about it is only open for our honk in a limited timeframe after it lights up?
All the videos out there show the honk at a random time.
Isn't it noticeable that the UP doesn't light up when an UA is present

I'd like to announce a momentous scientific discovery!!
Nope, not the message but a mapping exercise of Merope 5c.

I declare the Murdock Meridian at -117.7 degrees longitude. (+/- 0.5 degree of error)
Merope 5 is always above this longitude between +/- 15.78 degrees latitude.

This hour is the Hobnob Solstice because currently Merope 5 is directly overhead at -15.78, -117.69.
I confidently predict that in exactly 3.3 days, the Rich Tea Solstice will occur with Merope 5 directly above +15.78, -117.7

These latitudes should henceforth be known as the Tropic of Mad Dogs and the Tropic of Canonn.

All maps of Merope 5c will bear these names with pride!!

That what you're getting it?

Or 1/2 r lat, 1/3 r long and 1/4 r alt.

I realy don't know. It's only how I would see the symbols if I was presented the drawing, out of the context of ED.

Your are right, had this idea 10min before. Didn't thought long enough about details.
But if this would work it is simple enough to make FD laugh about all our previous speculations. :)

I give my full suport to the MDM meridian.
God work on checking and testing.

-117.7 is the new zero. :)
