Horizons planet side compass ?

People been whining for that for a while.. me included.

ALSO add a compass in supercruise that allows us to to tell Z+ or Z- the galactic plane, the NSEW grid coords so we can extrapolate which star we are looking at.

I've seen stars and tried to line them up in the galaxy map and you just can't. You can't orient yourself to pick the star and then try and find it in the galaxy map.

I asked David B in a live chat before and he was asked the question but he didn't undertstand it nor answer it - we wanted the ability to point to a star from supercruise and select it and have it show up in the galaxy map.

I was thinking exactly the same today. I saw a star formation in the sky that i wanted to investigate or find on the galaxy map. There's no way to get any sort of direction. I can't believe that a spaceship would fly through the galaxy without knowing its co-ordinates and direction.

I settled for using the galaxy's & Nebulae for orientation when in space without a heading display, the spiral arms also help. Failing that you can always target any star in the galmap to figure out your direction whist in the ship.

True that.

When one ponders..., its amazing all those dots we see from our cockpit's perspective are looking exactyly as we would perceive them, from same Milky Way's coordinates. Most probably.

Sometimes, late in the night, after few shots of whiskey, to remind this -- gives me the nasty kick! ;)

I'm so        **g small!!!! :/

What this game really cries out for is a 3D system map akin to the galaxy map. For me anyway, that puny little radar thingy in the cockpit just doesn't give me enough information about where I am in a system, or even which direction I'm pointing. We have a 3D galaxy map with billions of stars. Why not a 3D system map with a few dozen (at most) planetary bodies?

...and pretty, pinky, beautifull piggy in fancy basket for to carry around!

-- I'd love that piggy!! I'd hug it all day long!! Can I?? Please??!!!!

;)

Kidding here:) We'll get there. Season 4. Though I find this bits of disorientation pretty cool feeling. When alone, out there, so far away...

If I may sell you a tip of an advice: feel more, breath the vastness around you. Elite Dangerous is a magical game. Let it whisper to you with all its beautifull details. 3D map is just a detail here... :) :)

I really like it. But going down the line it can be a performance killers if you have to render the galaxy ACCURATE at 60 fps.
I think this is one reason why we don't get it,

"The enemy's gate is down."

Beyond that - Supercruise is so powerful it kinda makes navigation aids irrelevant. {imo}

There is a compass.
0 is North, 180 is South.

Just be aware that due to a current bug, 0° is South and °180 is North. At least, in every planet I have been on.

I'm sure they'll get around to rolling back the "fix" that was introduced in 2.1 to correct the problem that wasn't there.

*Considers* http://www.astrolabes.org/index.htm

Like a planispheric astrolabe? Or something simplier, with local star highlights (maybe mandatory to scan the local system nav beacon); out to say 8 ly away (common jump range or based on local stellar luminance), integral functional part of planetary approach module; from orbital cruise or closer to the surface.
Test and demo from near Earth orbit to plot historic constellations, like Draco, Ursa Major, Little Dipper, etc? Projected onto the windscreen hud?
*Sips some more coffee*
Sounds like a good idea.

:D

Actually an 0 to 180 system for North and South is pretty handy considering the lack of local GPS sats in 400,000,000,000+ star systems. Not to mention local magnetic variance or the lack of an iron core planet...
