Just what the game needed: More forced combat.
So much for play your way...now its grind out Engineers for better weapons and shields or die. Constantly.
No thanks.
You need to work the game mechanics to your advantage. Obtaining the Engineer mods is a lot better now than when I got them. The first thing to do is get the speed and defense necessary to survive. It's a toss up as to what to get, shields or speed. Farseer is the Engineer I worked on first, then Tod (because multi-cannons got a good buff and the odds are good to get an experimental effect if you use easily obtainable mats, i.e. sulfur/nickel, to do multiple rolls). Also a dirty drive is a must. These level 1 mods will give a you a better chance. Then work up as you pick up the mats that come your way.
You need to get CR's for better ships. The CR's are most easily obtained bounty hunting and the best bounty hunters IMHO are the Vulture and the FAS, work towards those. Ultimately you may want a multi-role ship, the Python is a great choice though it will cost you 100 mill to 160 mill CR. I imagine there are other options but those worked for me
The game is a progression that is a huge time sink. It is designed that way and your expectations must be realistic. I've got 1440+ hours in it and what I have is a class A Python with level 3 to mostly 5 mods and a Corvette in port awaiting better modules (CR's!!!). I've got 222 mill CR cash and milking Sothis/Ceos for 30 mill CR long hauls for capital (more when you are allied with the local factions). However, you need to have a good all-around ship for that run (Python again, 200+t of cargo, plus fighting/running/range capabilities). I have concentrated my attention to one specific goal at a time and pick targets of opportunity when available.
If you do not use the Engineer mods, even if you have all class A equipment, you will be toast, more so if you try any trading. The NPC's have been way toned down since the Engineers dropped, but there are random NPC's that are very aggressive and if you aren't ready will fry you. And though NPC's are mod limited, I am pretty certain I recently encountered a Python with mod shields and weapons (colored weapon trails).
The game has imposed the rules of natural selection, you adapt or die, believe me I wasn't happy for quite a while but now I have a good chance to get through to my game goals. One thing though, FD has made a game that is not friendly to 1st timers as before. But if an old guy like me can do it anyone can.
