You can force a server change by writing down the IP and adding it to your hosts file.

Which host file?

Can you write down where it is and what you do to add the IP please.ie cut n paste what it should look like.
This might help some ppl join buddy up on the same server.

I wish they went with some other MP structure ... Even though I never have problem with any games. And I often make host when playing with my friends because I am one of not many who has public IP .... I really can't play elite.

And I think that it isn't problem on my side ... i tried it all, I can even login when there is no one around. But I just can't connect to anyone else.

So I really wish they drop P2P for something else.

P2P really should work for you. What exactly is your problem? Can you give more details? Why do you think you can't connect to anyone else.

P2P won't be dropped. And you really should have no problems with it.

You can't argue that you are going to make something that does not scale, scale.

I will bite. How it's related with ED P2P problems? :)

So many times I have to explain, this is a problem of numbers. FD at the moment needs to sell as much copies of the game as they can and since I doubt the masses will be buying it for its single player value (cause single-player is so 1960s) the multiplayer needs to function.

Baseless speculation in my opinion. David wanted to do multiplayer since 2000. Server/client system have other serious limitations, and cost is only one of them.

You can therefor cap possible sales figures by the amount of internet connections capable of handling the ridiculous bandwidth requirements, mad ISP induced latency issues and security measures (or lack there of) for ED to be able to function properly.

Traffic is already improved a lot. My traffic usage is very low. Server connection usage is very low. ISP introduce latency issues, true, but it seems it's majority of people who spoil other fun. According to Howard, people with low bandwidth can bring whole session down. They working on fix for that.

ED's required setup means one player per internet connection and then nothing else on that connection. That means one copy per your average house that has internet, as supposed to one house with 3 players inside (because that wont scale). And then noone else on that internet connection will be able to do anything. Your internet will behave as if all 5 your housemates are torrenting at the same time.

Pure ludicrous...

Again, please show where traffic still causes problem, because from my experience this problem is gone with alpha 4. Current problem is high ping/low bandwidth hosts. FD has started to work to minimize traffic from such hosts, allowing people with fatter pipes to take over hosting of session.

I know you knowledgeable and don't take this personally, but for last months you have been on my ignore list for a reason.

Vista and Windows 7 use User Account Control (UAC) so Notepad must be run as Administrator.

1. Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories

2. Right click Notepad and select Run as administrator

3. Click Continue on the "Windows needs your permission" UAC window.

4. When Notepad opens Click File -> Open

5. In the filename field type C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts

6. Click Open

7. Add the entry

Code:
127.0.0.1 XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX
Replace the XXXs with the server IP

Example - 127.0.0.1 54.1.07.999

8. Click Save

TBH I've been around since Thursday and I've not seen him post anything other than negativity and bashing comments

The game is great, warts and all. If you expect perfection then you'll always be let down, if you expect issues then when they arrive its no big deal. David and FD are doing the best they can to create thus game and no offence intended here but I'm fairly sure they know enough about their own game to decide what's best for it.

I am ok with constructive criticism and he provided it plenty during first alpha phases. However his tone has changed and I simply don't enjoy it anymore. Not saying FD have done everything right with p2p, they certainly have hit some roadblocks, but instead of trashing and calling for technology change I tried to query FD about this a bit. Answers I got gives me more hope and I am less skeptical about this now. He seems to be very convinced about his truth....so I will leave him to that.

single player

if it help I don't mind playing the single player version then u might get away with it/ also u onl need server for wars basic stuff can be loaded onto users laptop and then wen need muti input transmitted.. I know this could allow hacker to access the system

I really can't say why I can't connect to other people ... but only time i am able to load to station there is no one around ... or I get spinning sidewinder bug.

... yesterday I was able to log into game and I flew away from station. So i could play. But i can't exit super cruise to stations ... never. And every time i exit super cruise to some location there are no players. I did not seen one player since I started playing.

I tried opening ports, tried putting my PC to DMZ, Opening/closing firewall, antivirus and so on. There is no change. I just never see anyone and can't get to stations (unless I get loaded to empty instance ... which almost never happens)

Start with a speed test, head over too

Run the test and paste the results

Ok, not tried the host file (yet)

I have tried it on two computers, using different internet connections... still not working.

I think I might have to clear saves? anyone got anything else?

I'm sure I was in I Bootis, in the space station when I saved.

After that I could not get back on

They're defo fine, ping is nice & low.

Raise a ticket and post the network logs so the team can check it out.

Only other thing is maybe your ISP is blocking the default UDP port for some reason. Gimme a sec, there's a topic on how to change it.

Edit

Here ya go

1) Select an available UDP port, e.g. UDP/5100
2) Configure 'Port Forwarding' or 'Application access' on your router so that your chosen UDP port on your internet IP address is forwarded to your computer's IP address on the same UDP port
3) Locate your game installation, by default it installs to C:\Program Files (x86)\Frontier\EDLaunch\Products\, but it might be different on your computer
4) Edit AppConfig.xml in Notepad and make the following changes:
5) Change Port="0" to your chosen UDP port, e.g. Port="5100"
6) Change UpnpEnabled="1" to UpnpEnabled="0"
7) Add a new line before the "</Network>" entry that includes your own internet IP address and chosen port number, e.g.
<Self name="my computer" ip="1.2.3.4" port="5100" />

Seems more like connectivity issue with server than peer to peer session. Please report this in detail using Launcher -> Technical support or https://support.orerve.net/http/user/loginform

I would assume that someone messing with your open ports OR throttling/limiting your P2P traffic. This shouldn't have impacted your connection with server though. And it seems you connect with server just fine, but have no luck joining any instance. Please report this with adding most recent networkLog.txt.

I tried that before ... did not worked. But I was able to connect now. But i did not have my joystick plugged in. Second try ... no connection.

One question ... Am I supposed to writhe there my internal IP (192.168....) or my public IP?

Yeah ... I did that yesterday. Should I create new ticket?

I wrote those instructions, they were based on ED's first iteration of the P2P model that relied only on uPnP.

When that failed because those instructions are way to complicated for your avarage joe & not everyone has access to uPNP ED switched to STUN & TURN technology.

Ignore those instructions! The creator said so.

If you get a clear message that says you have been disconnected from the server (remember there is no server), you got disconnected because the registration server is unable to communicate with you (because of noob netcode behaving like dos attack). To solve this issue best to download net-limiter and limit ED's bandwidth to 80% of your total upload capacity. That way ED cannot choke its own keepalive message that it sends to the registration server, keeping you in the game. Additionaly you can increase your ConnectionTimeout="975" to the registratoin server. That also helps so that you don't get "disconnected"

Don't expect to see other players. MP does not work all game instances are full of churn. Clients lagging out because of previous game sessions etc.

Also don't do back to back MP connects, wait 60 seconds. The old session's clients are still spamming you from the game you just crashed from..

PS - don't listen to Pecisk he has no clue.

No, if you have new observations, please add note to existing ticket. It seems there's some confusion here - you have internal IP after all, that means you have router. What kind of router you have and what kind of connection you have with ISP? You have real public IP behind router right?

DO NOT DO THIS.

127.0.0.1 always refers to the localhost (ie, your computer).

In any case, this wouldn't help anything.
Once the system has an IP Address it stops looking further. So it would never look at the HOSTS file for resolution because it's already resolved. (ie, 54.1.07.999 , which isn't a valid IP address anyway, none of the octets can exceed 255 in value)

Who ever gave this advice initially has no idea on how Windows name resolution works and shoudn't be advising anything on the subject. They are abysmally ignore on the subject and should be ignored.

Yeah I have router And my computer is placed in DMZ. It is Linksys E3200. But even when I connect without it, there is no change. Also there should be another router that ISP uses to distribute internet to people in my house ... can't change or overcome that one.

And yes, I have real public IP behind that router. I used to host lots of games, and had TS server and FTP server in the past ... never got problem with connection from anywhere.

With ISP I have optic cable that is bridged from house next to me via some kind of wireless ... don't know what tech is used exactly.

You sir are exactly the kind of case I am talking about. Unless you have clean internet (with access to the router), not shared or some other home backed public community share you just wasted your money on lies.
