Pilot Gender: Character Creation

With the upcoming ability to put a face on your pilot and with the ability to choose a male or female pilot, I was curious if anyone has any thoughts on the gender of their current pilot and if they will consider changes. I'm also curious about any thoughts concerning how you might create your pilot's face.

My thoughts on this stem from discussions about gender in the Destiny game. I don't think of my character as myself but I do like to immerse myself into games. So while I'm not my character, I'm not just a puppeteer either. In Destiny you can have 3 characters, starting out with 3 classes to choose from, each can be chosen from 3 races and make or female. That's a lot of choices and you can customize their looks. Once chosen there's no ability to make changes later on. My avatar here is a male Awoken Warlock, Warlock being the class and Awoken the race, humans that were changed - out there.

In ED we have more limited choices. Right now you can pick a male or female pilot but that doesn't seem to change much. I'd find it strange to have a female commander called Brian of Ardagh but only due to the name being my real first name. On the other hand if I have to look at my pilot very much I'd rather it be female I think, but that depends on how often I have to look at it. I just don't want to look at another ugly mug, mine is bad enough. I look like a fat Mark Harmon after a Lost Weekend!

In Destiny I have 3 characters, the aforementioned Warlock, a brute of a male human Titan, and a lithe and quick human female Hunter.

So, what are your thoughts on your pilot's gender, the future character creation ability or the combination of those two? Will you create a character like yourself, something totally different? Will you change your pilots gender to match or not match your IRL gender?

One last thought is if FD will allow outlandish character faces and will faces be limited to the current pilot gender selected in game?

That will open a whole can of worms with the SJW crew.

If people are not allowed to self-identify as monosodiums glutamates, polyphonics, cislords, trans-fats, tartan lighters or attack helicopters, the fashionable sophisto's will moan until they can.

You had to go there so early, huh? You couldn't have waited for page 3? :)

I don't think that FD are planning, from what they've discussed so far anyway, anything besides a binary gender system. Who knows what the future holds but lore wise there doesn't seem to be much besides binary gender roles in the Elite universe. Perhaps in a 1000 years it won't matter and you can change yourself anytime you wish, a la John Varley's Steel Beach.

Why wait?

When you realise you've got an irreparable cavity - you get that tooth pulled. Gender in a game literally means nothing. If it did, then there would be a positive or negative in-game for either (solve for x) gender, or they would not be equal in-game, and that would have the SJW's crying into their frappucinos even harder.

For those who suggest that gender has been ignored in games and presents inequality for either (solve for X^2 this time) then may I suggest Ant Attack as an example?

Sure, gender has no impact on game play but ED still allows you to choose one and with the upcoming character creation tool you'll be able to choose how your pilot looks.

This thread was created to discuss those options and the character creation tool, not as a platform for you to make comments about SJWs. Please create your own thread on that subject, I'd prefer that this thread not be derailed before it even gets started. If this thread finds no interest in the community then it will die naturally.

What possible difference does it make how your pilot looks? Create pilot avatars that look however you want them to be. Make skinny ones, make fat ones, make tall ones, make short ones, make ones with different meshes - make whatever you like - as long as it makes no difference in-game, it doesn't matter.

IF avatar creation makes a difference in-game, you can expect every player, his dog, and it's fleas to adopt the same avatar to maximise the in-game benefits.

Your triggering offends me as I was not triggered first.

How dare you one-up my professional victim complex?

Your post made me laugh out loud while in a public space. I am now the victim of several sideways glances.

I'll be sending you my therapy bills.

And in version 3.2 when Froniter introduces Cybernetic Engineers we'll all be questing around the galaxy for all new rare materials to take a gamble on just which organ gets a special enhancement.

it makes no material difference to gameplay, therefore your second paragraph is moot.

I'm asking what people will do with the tools. It's of interest to me and I hope interest to others. In Destiny a lot of players put great thought in how their characters looked. I asking what players think about the tools.

You may wish not to create a character or you may just go with the first design that pops up on the screen. That's your choice, just as anyone else has. People will make choices based on what ever criteria they want but it won't be random. Therefore that can be a discussion point.

A question for you is what will you make your in-game avatar look like? Will you make it look like you, older, younger, taller, skinnier, etc? Or will you just hope there's a random button or that you don't have to choose?

I was in the same public space. You just randomly started laughing out loud and I felt humiliated because I thought you were laughing at me. The emotional damage inflicted will require years of therapy that, I'm sure my lawyers will agree, should be paid for by you.

Honestly the character creation thing is pretty uninteresting to me. I'll spend plenty of time in Dark Souls or Fallout customizing my character, but for a space sim? With no ability to get out of your ship and walk around in the foreseeable future? Honestly seems a bit pointless. I usually make characters male (like myself), so I'll probably do that, but I'm probably not going to put too much thought into it unless they decide to surprise us all with releasing the FPS mode early (not gonna happen).

Moderators: please close this thread. I missed that there is already a long thread about avatar creation. This thread just seems to be attracting flies.

You assume what moot means. You assume it is not a point of discussion because of your sense of privileged location and limited knowledge of geography and social awareness. I am triggered!!!!!

As for Destiny - who knows or cares what your avatar looks like when it's always wearing a helmet? At least mine did.

Multicrew is one of the features expected in version 2.3 and that is when we'll start needing avatars. At first it will be a quality of life issue so that if you head-look at the Commander sitting next to you you'll be able to recognize them. Frontier has stated in the past that they want to eventually implement the ability to walk around outside the cockpit ... around our ships, inside stations and maybe even on planets or doing EVAs to repair our ships. All of these features will be reasons why Avatar creation will be necessary.
