Confused about the Nvidia Control Panel and it's effect on the CV1

Hi all,

I've seen so many different posts and different settings in the past regarding the NVCP.

I know it was well worth tinkering with on the DK2 when it was effectively an extended screen.

But what's the best settings for the CV1?, does it do anything at all these days or is it kinda bypassed by the direct to rift scenario we now have?

Cheers!

at least for me changing settings in the Nvidia control panel changes nothing on the cv1 just my monitor

I don't believe the Nvidia control has any colour override effects on the CV1 with it using direct mode

Thanks for your response,

I'm wondering mostly about the 3D settings with application override and pre-rendered frames etc.. getting the CPU to help the GPU and all that kinda stuff..

I'll experiment and see what, ( if anything ) I can achieve with this, if anyone has already sussed this out then I'm all ears!

One thing that I think does make a difference (well, to me, at least), was in "Change Resolution", and is "Output Dynamic Range". By default this is "Limited" (assuming it comes up on your system), and changing it to "Full" adds to the top and bottom end colour depth. When I recently did a driver update, clean install, I noticed the colours seemed a bit washed out. Enabled full range, colours were back to nice.

Try unplugging the rift and plugging the monitor into the rift's port. Then you can make changes to that port's output. Then put the rift back in that port and the changes will be evident in the rift. Try changing the dynamic colour range from limited to full and play with the gamma and hue. Don't overcook the brightness though and keep an eye on the rift's temperature.

I'll try this tonight. Having messed with the monitor settings for the regular monitor panel and not seeing any effect (gama changes stick, but the colour banding is still easily visible, just brighter or darker etc in line with thew settings changes made). Not too hopeful, but will take any improvement! :)

Is that a real thing? Please confirm as it sounds worthy of going in the compendium

That works for me too- it's the fact that the Rift runtime can't be put into Extended Mode anymore that requires something else on that port to allow the parameters to be changed first, and then the Rift plugged back in.

For those that have a HTC Vive, putting it into Extended Mode (which SteamVR still allows) means you can change NVidia settings on the fly without swapping to a monitor first, then just put the headset back into Direct Mode when you're done.

Can confirm this affects the rift - I usually run my screen on the DVI port, sooo just to be 100% sure, I unplugged the rift and plugged in my monitor into the same port using an hdmi cable, then went into NVCP and turned the digital vibrance down to 0, the desktop went black & white.

I then saved, unplugged the HDMI cable, and swapped my screen back into to DVI port giving me back my usual colour desktop.

Plugged the Rift into the HDMI port that I'd tweaked with my monitor and the rift has just booted up in black and white!

Does it reset on reboot?

Finally going to get round to trying this now. Found an HDMI monitor I can borrow. Wish me luck as the black smearing is just a bit too bothersome as of late.

EDIT: Alas, did not work at all. Sigh

EDIT2: Ok the vibrance does seem to work, but the brightness/contrast/gamma does not. That's the bit that counts

Any tips?
