Could someone tell me what the vertically split circle above "100%" means? (Also looks like an open and close parentheses.)

AFAIK they refer to the type of attack you are having: there is a "flaming" one that means you are experiencing a thermal attack. I'm afraid I don't know the split circle one.

That area shows different symbols according to what special effects attacks have. They show up under your ship schematic when you are being attacked with a modded weapon with special effects, and under your target's schematic when you are attacking them with a weapon like that.

Thank you! When all else fails, RTFM.

But of all the symbols shown, I can only recall ever seeing the parentheses. Maybe I was too busy fighting to notice when the rest of those unkind things were being done to my poor, defenseless Corvette.

NPCs don't target internals and don't use engineered weapons, so some of the symbols you will only see in a fight with another commander.

You see them show up a lot in the display of the interdictor you are running from as he flies through all the mines you have donated to him.
