Hi guys,

I just made a post proposing that people submit their neutron star findings between the old bubble and the new bubble to build a stellar highway... and it instantly got closed by a moderator with a link to this thread :)

To be fair, I was a bit surprised that no one proposed it earlier... and it was here all this time! Dumb me... this forum is a maze sometimes.

Anyway, I just came to say: good job guys! I think this will be really useful!

I also have a question: why Hyponia and why The Fallows? Is there anything special there? I'm not much of a serious explorer, and have only been to Sag. A*. What makes those two places so special?

Cheers! And good job again!

Cheers Sabier :)

Hyponia and Froadik (The Fallows) are home to two major permit locked sectors, so a highway to both could become a well traveled route once whatever is placed there becomes open to players ;) Hopefully a friendly species that wants trade links with Colonia.

So its looking like a micro grid then? Still viable if we find candidate neutrons and WDs close enough to each other in the intermediate arms... but probably not going to be very viable in the outer arms where candidate system are much sparser.

I think it's going to benefit primarily the pilots who don't want to bother with G1 jumponium or want to save on it. I'm usually in the fringes so getting 25% bonus occasionally is okay provided I can repair the damage. If the damage is on hull/PP then I won't touch that supercharge because I tend to stay out for extended periods.

Edit: Also perhaps utilising neutron fields can be of great use when flying in the core.

I don't think NS are that rare... in my last 2 kylies from Beagle Point towards Jaques I found more than 200 NS, most of them between 50 ly over and 350 ly under the galactic plane. A picture of some of them...

Some_NS.jpg

Maybe 25% is too short, since it will be not that different from doing a normal jump and probably slower, but if they change it to something like a lvl 3 jumponium I think you can travel more than half the galaxy from NS to NS in an anaconda without the need to go 1k over or under the plane.

I have to say that I am very disappointed in FDev over this. 25% boost is mostly useless, as the route plotter can’t use that mid route, so you need to enter the galaxy map and manually plot one jump to even take advantage of the boost. In the time it takes you to scoop the NS/WD, repair the damage, and then manually plot the single jump, you could have easily simply jumped a couple of normal jumps and gotten much farther along your route with much less risk and no damage. 25% relegates this new feature to just a gimmick that will practically never be used by anyone.

This feature has so much potential to add both a meaningful but risky travel mechanic to the game, AND add benefit to the community by allowing and encouraging projects just like the one in this very thread. To do this though the mechanic has to be worthwhile, it has to be a benefit and not a detriment. At 25% it is not, the boost really needs to be at least a 200% to 300% boost to make it meaningful and useful.

I hope FDev changes their minds on this as they have great potential to add something fantastic to the game. They should absolutely do another community poll on this, I’m pretty sure the results would be very lopsided towards larger and risky jumps over the 25%. As they intend it to be now, I’d probably never use it at all. :(

I think 25% will be the starting point for FD - they've set the bar low, but will listen to feedback and readjust it based on that feedback. I'll be surprised if it isn't 100% bonus by the time 2.2 comes out of beta.

If FD are aware of projects like this, then they will be aware that to make them work requires a balance to be found. Too low a bonus makes the project worthless, and too high a bonus makes it pointless. Lets hope they know what the exploration community has planned and see its merits!

My fear is the whole idea was designed with "bubble traffic" in mind - where there's a high proportion of NS and WD dotted around it - so 25% makes sense there. Maybe they forgot that explorers would love to have this feature be useful too?
