Complete List of (real) Nebulae and Galaxies in Elite

Wikipedia lists 2 distances 1,145 ly and 1,794 ly(not sure why)

The distance method used to find the 1145 LY figure has an error rate of ~30% which is quite normal for astronomical distance estimations. The method used to find the 1794 distance is probably more accurate since it uses a more comprehensive statistical approach which includes parallax measurements. Wikipedia lists both because they are fairly recent and it's Wikipedia. I imagine ED is referencing catalogues that are older than Oct 2014, so the lower figure is used in game.

Ok OP updated with all the new nebulae to date. New table for nebulae reachable only via jump mats (or theoretically reachable via jump mats). Please go over it and double check I got it write, submitters!

I can confirm that the two nebulae are reachable, and I'm fairly certain that the Skull nebula is too. I seem to remember people saying that they went there in the Horizons beta, but I can't find a source for it now. It looks reachable to me though.
There's a very small typo: "G2 dustcloud"
Oh, and the real-life picture for the Little Gem nebula gives an "account suspended" error.

Thanks for the attention to detail. Rep!

I've made the corrections, and added a few videos for some of the nebulae and galaxies from the DeepSkyVideos series on youtube

Here are two planetary nebulae missing from the list: IC 4997, with the central star being CSI+16-20178, 8000.02 ly from Sol, and NGC 6891, with BD+12 4266 and 8500.02 ly. Both are reachable, and were first discovered by yours truly. I wrote up the story of that expedition here.

Hello there,

Great list, very usefull for my attempt to visit all real nebulae in ED.
Some nebulae I did not find in the lists:
NGC 1501, NGC 6445, NGC 6563, NGC 6567 and NGC 6629
All of them are reachable (I've been there)

Bye.

Hi guys, still going to get round to updating the recent list, but here's something awesome I've discovered. I've managed to use the config files to set the HD screenshot to be...wait for it...32K

I've used it to image all the galaxies on the galaxy map and it has produced their shapes. I am so pleased!

It seems like either Frontier aren't using the right models for the galaxies, or I am just completely wrong. I'm not being arrogant, but I don't think I am wrong - the galaxies I've charted are all positioned in the right positions for the galaxies in our local group, and I've identified them, so I really think Frontier just used their own images. But hey, could be wrong! Still no dev response about this. Here's a teaser:

I'm going to be doing them all properly soon.

Ône thing I always wondered is where the heck FD placed the Sagittarius Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy. It's supposed to be some 70kly from Sol in the constellation of Sagittarius close to the galactic plane, but so far I haven't found anything matching its description and location.

I'm hoping that Frontier will consider implementing Nvidia Ansel at some point.
Was playing around with it in The Witcher 3 and it makes high res screenshots at custom resolutions pretty easy.

Reachable only with jump mats (2)

NameDistance from Sol (ly)Central Star?*
Bow-Tie Nebula3,500YesScreenshot
Little Gem Nebula6,000YesScreenshot
*Only applies to planetary nebulae - emission/reflection/diffuse nebulae generally have many central stars, and dark regions never have a central star
**exact distance subject to confirmation

you can reach the little Gem nebula without Jumponium, i took a trip this weekend to test out a ship, if you want a list of systems to aim for i can give you the route which only requires a 46ly range

Yeah, that field should read "reachable only with increased FSD range", now that we have mods as well. Back when the Little Gem nebula was added to the list, we had jump boosts only.
