A Guide to Minor Factions and the Background Sim

Brett has just replied (and closed) the thread I started asking for a specific BGS forum: Any chance of an ED BGS sub forum.

Pity. There has been an average of one BGS thread per day, and 1.5 pages in this thread per day, in the 10 days since I created the thread. There are sub forums that haven't had that amount of activity this year.

Being a relatively optimistic fellow, I'd read his reply as a challenge to justify a BGS sub forum rather than a no. From my reading of it, if we increase the number of posts and contributors to the thread to a sufficient level then he'd consider creating a dedicated section.

I think we have all been pretty good by not flooding the forum with BGS threads. Had we done so, a sub-forum would be easy to justify. I'm going to keep a note of any new ones, just in case this discussion comes up again.

What about getting it stickied, like the UA thread

I think this is a good idea. But it won't help with things like the need for a beginner's guide. Also, the OP is becoming out of date now. Walt Kerman has done a brilliant job, but I think he may need to pass the job onto someone else.

edit - bags not!

VIP passengers behave strangely... A criminal mastermind will increase influence and decrease bust for both factions, and a rich tourist will increase influence and decrease civil unrest for both factions...

Folks,

Seeing as we didn't get our own subforum, perhaps we should use one of the suggested other subforums

the guides one is probably the most appropriate.

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/forumdisplay.php/77-Guides-and-Tutorials

Starting each thread with BGS, I would suggest that we have in-depth theoretical/scientific discussions on mechanics in theme specific threads there and post outcomes into this thread (or a new main guide thread on the main forum) with links to the discussions.

Any thoughts? Likey/no likey?

I'm afraid I don't have premission to post there :/

Ah yes, a minor flaw in my cunning plan. Damnit should have read it through before posting.

"A forum for approved or well known people in the world of Elite to post their guides, tips n' tricks, and tutorials for others to learn upon. Everyone can reply to threads within this forum. Approved Topic Submitters Only!"

We should probably petition for a small number of approved submitters to kick off threads. Once posted we can all contribute. I would suggest that we keep the number of treads relatively small.

Any takers?

Does a faction have to achieve 60% influence to trigger a war with the leading faction or merely overtake them? Sorry if this has been asked before but I can't remember if that changed at all.

Influence should equalize as you pass and trigger a conflict pending (conflict may be election, war or civil war depending on govt types). If influence doesn't equalize then one of the factions is in a conflict (or pending) in another system. The 60% thing is where you have passed already but not triggered a conflict due to the above. This will result in a coup type conflict so you don't have to go equalize when you're so far ahead.

The 60% rule will only trigger a coup if the conflict is against the system owner and that owner is the one with lower influence.

You can start any conflict by matching the other's influence as long as other conflict states don't block it. (Keep in mind that a conflict state can only be blocked by another conflict state).

Thank you for the answers. My faction was below lead faction, next tick we had gone ahead by a couple of %. There were no conflict states between ours or lead faction to interfere. This latest tick has us 5% ahead of the controlling faction but with no war pending still and hence my question. I am assuming then that if we wanted to trigger the war we would now need to get from our current 34% to 60%.

Right let me get this straight.

We ask, through numerous people on this thread for a specific Sub forum to the BGS. - Denied by Brett, under the guise that there is insufficient 'interest and posts about said BGS' and he offers some area in which we should consider using.
Only that said area, 'GUIDES' is a closed shop where none of us can freely start a thread but have to await some 'approved' person to do it.

The whole bleedin' point was to try and get away from having one bleedin' long thread where questions get pushed down the line quicker than Usian Bolt gets off the blocks, and yet they recommend just that but somewhere else.

Bleedin' Genius. I guess it answers a lot of questions about the why's we get updates in the state they are. :(

Easier to drop your influence again when the blocking conflict has ended, but if its a low pop/low activity system then by all means push ahead. The coup war will not initiate until the blocking war ends.

Either your faction is in conflict elsewhere or your prospective opponent is. (or pending). Check local news for both factions which may tell you where. Although if it is a long running conflict it may not as the improved news serviced was introduced in 2.1. Seek and ye shall find! :)

There's probably a conflict state pending with one of the two factions in another system. That's the most common cause of a conflict not happening when you pass close by.

Has anyone else seen a faction's presence in a system suddenly disappear, replaced by another faction, without the faction ever going into retreat state? I saw this today with one faction I was tracking, and there's another I think it happened to as well (but I don't have exact one-day data on that second one).

On the one I have good data for, the faction was definitely not in retreat state yesterday, and today one of their presences in a 7-slot system is gone, but there are still 7 factions present.
