The Vive discussion Thread

All in all I'd say it's great. Faster development cycles benefit everyone. There's better hardware available sooner for those with deep pockets and the sooner current hardware becomes outdated, the cheaper it will be to obtain for those who couldn't afford it previously.

Now reading that article however is somewhat discouraging.

E.g. it states the Vive comes without headphones whereas it comes with quite decent ear-plugs adjusted for the required length. Plainly a wrong statement.

Now RoadtoVR is a heavily OR biased site, so that wouldn't worry me. My worry is that HTC actually seems to follow that non-modular trend, resulting in even less games with proper speaker support.

Having a decent 5.1/7.1 speaker setup, being able to play at high volume and not using headphones makes up 40% of the experience in VR, especially in Room-Scale.

There are workarounds for seated experiences when using Headphones such as ButtKicker. For Room-scale, you need speakers for a visceral experience unless you're willing to use ButtPlug™.

I'd rather prefer speaker support, but then again I'm probably weird...

Someone that gets it!!!

Hi,

I'm planning on buying the HTC Vive. I normally use an XBOX 360 controller so my question is; how much will this affect my VR experience, given that the character in the cockpit is holding a stick/throttle?

Thanks

I had 300-400 hours on my Xbox One with the Elite controller. When I started on PC I looked at a few HOTAS, but in the end said forget it. I love the key combos and don't personally lose any immersion. If if really is an issue, try the base level, I think it's an X56? That people recommend, it's about $50 on Amazon so you're not out much if it doesn't help your immersion.

It won't be a problem in terms of not matching up, but you might struggle with lack of buttons, since you won't be able to see your keyboard too well. Voice Attack helps with this.

That said, f you can get a HOTAS and position it in roughly equivalent position in real life to the one in-game, it does increase the sense of presence in a nice way. By no means essential though!

Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X is an excellent entry level HOTAS. Note: it comes apart so as to be placed on either side of your keyboard if you so wish. :)

if one already owns a samsung gear and decent 2k phone i.e s7 series ect.....then you can sideload vr a app into it called riftcat.
it hooks into steam vr lol....and any occulus games....only drawback is its max fps at mo is 60fps...but its way playable....cant go back to old medieval flat screens now.

playing on high vr settings t 1080 60fps......all text is amazingly readable and have no issues at all......one has to have dev accsess on your vr though....also usb tether is best.

been playing ED,pcars(wow),ETS"...and dcs and war thunder..
for rift games i played luckys tale so far as its free.

soon the future updates will allow more fps to be streamed.

its that good that i have played my mates vive.....my image bis much sharper than his...he just has like a extra 30 fps.

so if one wants vr and has a samsung nmodern phone..get a gear vr and bypass all those money making companys.

we already have the tech...why pay for a badge?

DIY for the future!...lol

oh and a 360 pad or leap motion controllers will work as native controllers for the vive/steam vr software ect.

Hi guys,
I could do with a bit of advice regarding the galaxy map.....how on earth do you use it with the Vive, can't seem to select near by stars etc.
How are you guys navigating the galaxy map?

I had the same problem for some time, and the only way to fix it: is to go to options/controls AND configure the Galaxy Map controls for your controller (I assume you have a joystick, preferably HOTAS). When you have done that, it will become much much more usable.

Do you need more details?

The problem with the galaxy map is that your not seeing the selection crosshairs when you first switch to that view.
You need to tilt the map then you see the crosshairs that you select the star with not the mouse cursor, practice makes perfect
Play about with different controller binds to find what best suits you but always tilt the map a bit to get a bearing on the crosshairs

Anyone tried one of these 6mm foam replacements?

Normal is I believe 18mm.

It brings the lense closer so supposedly increases the FOV and the sweet spot so less blur when you look "off-angle". Trade off being a bit less comfy.

Fancy giving one a go but you're looking at around £30 for a pack of two. =/

Anyone tried one?

I'm using this re-placement. IMHO this bundle ( you will recive 2 pices) is must have accessories for Vive , even my glasses with strong anti-reflective lenses fit inside HMD without any problems. FOV is munch wider ( + 10~15 deg.) and also I noticed a lot less pressure on my face , so for me is more comfy and hygenic than orginal 18 mm foam .
Now I'm able play ED even 5~6h per night , before max 2 hours with pain :)

Well I was going to say, anyone want to go halves on a set? I don't think I need two and I am sure there will be someone else out there that does not want to pay £30 for two when they only want one!

Still a silly amount of money, but it is what it is.

I've ordered a set from overclockers : https://www.overclockers.co.uk/vr-cover-htc-vive-memory-foam-insert-6mm-pu-leather-vr-003-vr.html

£27.

So if you want the extra it will be £13.50 plus whatever it costs me to post it to you.

Should arrive on Thursday, can post it on Friday so you'd probably get it Saturday, or early next week depending on what postage you want to go for.

UK only please! :)

I have them. Do recommend.

Hmm anyone having any issues with the Vive greying out after a bit of use?

Also I'm getting the following which may or may not be related :

1. Clicking to start SteamVR in Steam does nothing
2. Headset often seems to be "always on". Like it's off but if I move it it lights up like it was on but in standby.
3. ED after a while drops from 90fps, working it's way through 45fps and going down to 25 fps. An ED restart always sorts it. It is intermittent. This is in VR though it does seem like it happened once in normal monitor based ED.

On (1) SteamVR not starting there seem to be 3 related processes that start when SteamVR is running :

- VR Compositor
- VR Dashboard
- VR Server

It looks like they stop too along with SteamVR.

So I guess somehow they are starting or not shutting down properly? I guess this could explain (2), headset IS on because they are running.

I have been flipping between the normal and Beta SteamVR. Maybe this could be the issue.

Ah, ok. So this is the issue I think.

Just for reference you don't need to start SteamVR to run ED, it all works fine so I've been doing that.

So the following I think breaks SteamVR.

  1. Start ED in HMD mode, without SteamVR running
  2. The SteamVR processes auto-start up : VR Dashboard, Compositor, Server
  3. Play ED
  4. Close ED, either via menu, window close, alt + f4, or even crash
  5. The 3 SteamVR processes do not exit
  6. Now unable to start SteamVR via Steam.
  7. But the Headset stays powered on, though you might not notice because it goes into standby

Not sure where the issue is here, is ED sending the SteamVR start signal and failing to send an exit signal, or maybe the detection done via some other mechanism.

You can also get sleep masks for about $1 each and just cut them out in the same shape. They'll let you get even closer to the lenses. These vrcover ones are of course much higher quality. But to just try it out for cheap just grab a couple of sleep masks (they will stick just fine to the velcro in the HMD).

I've seen the greying out issue once. I don't remember the exact circumstances leading up to it but I'd taken the headset off, gone afk for 10-15 minutes but had left Elite open. A reboot of the headset resolved it.
