The Star Citizen Thread v5

This is obviously a business agreement between Amazon and SC, they wouldn´t be allowed to use a logo this similar. Amazon would sue them into the eternity of space.

This makes it even worse for me, because it looks like a business model for SC. What´s next? Future Coca Cola ads?

Why would Amazon strike a deal like that? It's border line 'parody' usage which is protected by Constitution, still feels awkward as hell.

Just saw the Star Marine preview video.

Pros: I didn't fall asleep, overall 1st person perspective starts to look satisfying
Cons: everything is meh... Basically it sounds like a prettier yet embryonic ripoff of Interstellar Marines

Bad comparison. Interstellar Marines is in many ways the same as Star Citizen in that they promised the world, they claimed themselves to be the "first AAA indie dev" etc., yet their vision changed from a intriguing story-driven campaign with genetically modified sharks and mechs and whatnot to a bland generic team deatchmatch shooter.

Doesn't it rather abruptly stop being a parody when it's part of a commercial, with the intended use being one of making people buy jpegs? Even if the commercial was funny (it isn't), it's still specifically that: commercial use. I'm not sure you'd get away with copying someone else's trademarks and IPs at that point no matter what the tone of your presentation is.

I think they flirt with breaking law quite heavily, but I will guess Amazon is being smart not using their lawyers to give CIG additional publicity.

I don't know. I'd rather enjoy the publicity generated by CIG's consistent policy of infringing trademarks and copyrights to make money being brought to the attention of a court. I'm also pretty sure that they wouldn't share that feeling. Contrary to popular belief, there are some kinds of publicity you'd want to avoid, especially as an ostensibly creative company. :D

Not in post-Trump world you don't. Everything works :D

It's not quite that simple. Amazon "must" police it's trademark, or it risks losing some of it's rights (notably the right to claim for damages).

Well, 'funny' is a subjective term... Having slept on it, I guess the "Galactic Tour" stuff is obvious enough to pass as a parody: It's not objectively any different to Alec Baldwin doing Trump impressions on SNL and getting money for it (and I am fine with that).

Still not letting them off the Copperhead, though.

Huh? "Being Donald Trump" is not the same as a product or service a company delivers...

The main problem is in finding a way to contact Amazon. They have easily accessible links to report content that they should take down — informing about content of theirs that others should take down doesn't seem to have crossed their minds. :p

I emailed them a link. Just in case.

Considering CIG have stated they intend to release something, I am going to do the following:

1. See if they release it in a reasonable time (I don't expect the target deadline of Dec 8th to be met, but before Christmas would be nice) - If it goes beyond Jan 2017, I'll concede to the DS POV of a train wreck.
2. Try out whatever they actually release
3. Judge it then (I expect to be dissappointed) - At this point, I will finally decide on whether to apply for a refund or not

Yeah, actual release date is something we can all look forward to. Will be interesting.

That's a remarkably sane and level-headed approach. We must be on different Internets. :D
