An investigation into Frontier's actions on Combat Logging

Are you saying that moderators on reddit don't get involved in the debates? Heck, some of them create the topics!

Oddly enough, I didnt mention anything about Reddit. Likely because I keep my distance from that place, and because Reddit isn't any one company's official online forum.

I've seen some companies have separate "mod accounts" for the forum. Involvement in any debate could be done on the individuals personal account, but the marked mod account remained objective.

Interesting point. Tell me, do you really imagine that real life bad guys want to go to prison, or get shot dead by police officers? I always assumed they wanted to get away unscathed and spend the day rolling around in a pile of hookers and blow.

Lol
Totally. But now you are confusing in game character with out of game character. The in game character woukd want to do anything to skirt the law. The out of game character if they want to roleplay a bad guy shoukd want as exciting a response as possib!e... if all they want to do is blow players up with no consequence then we are back to square one.... they are griefers blowing players up to spoil players day. Cant have it both ways imo

And the funny thing here is.. unless the player has some issue with federation of pilots members, which considering every player is inc themselves then they have a problem there then... then targetting primarily players over npcs is in itsekf an out of game motivation. In game npcs are living characters too !

People argued there should be no distinguishing npcs from pcs.... in principle i like this idea but what a surprise... a lot of the pvpers use netword bandwidth monitering to sniff out players who are using stealth ... another blatant cheat if ever there was one (out of game tactic to get in game advantage)

Problem with developing a full crime and punishment system is this: Everyone has their own idea of it. Some was it strict, some want a 50/50, some want a loopholed system, some desire for things to remain as is, some want a system that is beyond what i personally would define as fun.

If you cause or do one thing, what is the reaction to it? You cause a Lichtenberg figure-effect, much atone to this image: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e4/PlanePair2.jpg - you start at the base, but as you branch out, things will split and methods to the reaction will change.

I would tend to be more sympathetic to this complaint if anything had yet been tried.

As it is, it looks like you have a terminal lack of confidence and are talking yourself into inaction through fear of failure.

Edit: To put it simply and maybe more kindly? You can't make an omelette without cracking some eggs. Get used to the idea that you're going to have side effects, but that overall the game *will* improve drastically if you address this.

Fair point. I mixed in your comments with the discussion earlier about Reddit vs this forum. I can see why you keep your distance ;)
Actually, for me the biggest problem is with following a discussion. I can't wrap my head around the threading they do, even though that's what it looked like on usenet way back when. Getting old I guess

Exactly. I think I managed to launch and dock a SRV today for the first time. No idea how to refuel it. It's a part of gameplay I have utterly no interest in - but am forced by game mechanics to learn if I want to use other game mechanics - the dreaded RNGineers - which I also have utterly no interest in - but am forced by game mechanics to learn to use if I'm going to be able to take part in some Community Goals competitively - which I also have utterly no interest in - but am forced by game mechanics to take part in if I'm going to do anything apart from Powerplay - which I also have utterly no interest in. There's always CQArena - which I also have utterly no interest in.
That seems to rule-out a large part of the game. Are there in fact ANY gameplay loops in Elite Dangerous which you enjoy? :)

Separate accounts cause needless issues. If it's publicly known which regular accounts belong to mods, anybody who might feel unable to disagree with a mod or perceive mods having opinions as a conflict of interest will continue to do so even when the mod is posting on their regular account.

So you end up having to keep it secret. Not only does that place extra burden on the mods, it also creates an "us vs them" culture and sows distrust. Mods are suddenly faceless enforcers rather than fellow community members. People who have been moderated during an argument begin to wonder whether the mod involved was an alt of a poster they were arguing with. It's a mess.

To put it another way, I'd much rather live somewhere where I can shoot the breeze with the local constable than somewhere that leaves me wondering whether the guy I'm talking to at the bus stop is with the secret police.

So regarding this, every week I pull up metrics for the forums, manually and automatically. What I read and see is what I write down and pass along, there is legitimately no modification from analytics result/forum metrics to write-up done. The only time I have to take sides on something is when the discussion is so overwhelming - not just on the forums, but on reddit, facebook and even twitter combined. For that to happen is quite rare to begin with.

With this thread here, it's a pickle. I have multiple sides all giving input to the scenario, and there's really no easy solution that will make people happy. Sure, I'm going to get yelled at for "did you even read the last 1000 replies?", "omg just implement crime punishment system rabble rabble...", etc etc. At this point, I'm trying to find the key points that appear to jive with the community. So far, not at that point. Reddit seems to be coming to a meeting ground, but here on the forums, not so much.

It's cuz this forum is like a garbage bag and censored half the time we say the real stuff and y'all dodge the real questions all the time. Gotta give you props for trying to improve for the last 4 months tho.

@asp explorer... you dont have to use an SRV to take part in engineers. I have never driven one and have no intention but got all my materials, data and commodities by other means...

Most of the censorship I've seen here has to do with language, name and shaming and extreme vitriol. I haven't seen opinions being censored.

FDev has many problems to get rid of! Gladly they refuse to bite on this bait!

At OP: grow balls and respect that PvP needs to happen between ppl that want to do PvP and let alone those who want to enjoy the game without beeing forced into your "cutthroat"-reasonings but still being able to take part in an open universe, ergo open!

You will be the first to feel what it meant if there was finally (!!) a PvE mode because you wouldn't have anyone to grief. Only Alternative within a common "open" would be a pve-flag.

PS: if you have the intense feeling that you need to kill other "real people" go play BF1...

I'm amazed you managed to type that with your knee jerking so violently.

That's because Reddit works by literally suppressing opposing view points via the up vote, down vote system.

Even if Reddits outcome was highly favourable to me, I wouldn't trust it purely from that systems standpoint.

Hey mr redditor, leave them kids alone!

So this is where my PVP side of me comes out, which at this point, this doesn't reflect to the views of Frontier Developments. This is over two decades worth of me playing FPS, RTS, MMO's, etc...

If a commander's ship is blown up by legitimate methods (read: by not using some silly app/script to hack the game client to magnify/aimbot the damage), be it open, or group, or whatever the mode... and they're crying about a one off event, that is not griefing, that is of one or more of the following...

1) Learn to play.
2) Know enemy player ships and loadouts.
3) Learn how to combat it.
4) Learn the alternatives to what just happened.

This goes without saying, if you've joined some persons private server (a private group in ED's case), it's generally requested that players stick to the guidelines given.

Okay, Brett! Let me just "learn to play" when my Sidewinder gets interdicted by a combat FdL! Let me just ADAPT TO IT!

Wait, what? Nothing I do is going to make a sidewinder competent against an FdL? Okay, I guess I'll just trust the crime and punishment system to handle the player accordingly. Except it won't.

Yeah, no. If you actually played the damn game without a dev account for any meaningful period of time, you wouldn't be making such obviously wrong statements as these. Utterly depressing.

Nah... ban all the QQ combat logging complainers ;) ... it is not called Elite: Dangerous for the reasons you think it is... this has been explained numerous times.

I could say something comparable about those particular players going back to playing Eve/WoW for certain reasons but that could be a little borderline in terms of the forum rules. :p
