So lets get this straight.. Our commander names are no longer unique?

So what's the easiest way to register a reservation for my name on XBox, which I never plan on using? Do I have to pay for XBox Live?

Do you like...have proof for that?

...

Does it matter? I don't intend to press the issue on those other platforms nor go into too many details here. My post was just meant as a warning to others that these things can happen. There are all sorts of people out there, especially in gaming communities, apparently.

How? What could they do to you on the xbox version?

- - - Updated - - -

They did. And they sorted it. They're not idiots. Although they should hire you for your insight.

"if they have the same name it might cause a DB problem! "

FD: "Yeh, Gary. We Uh. Yeh we know that, it's basic database management. We've sorted it though, every xbox player is marked as such so they're distinct"

"But someone might take my name and my identity! We need to fight back! Add 'minor citizen' to their names!"

Fd: "Shut up, Gary."

Hostile much? What didn't get your Cheerios last night?

It's pretty idiotic to have name reserved as KS feature then go along with a port that lets reserved name be taken period, doesn't matter if they use an excuse like oh well it doesn't matter cause it's xbox, ps4 or pc and xbox tags bla bla bla and then expect everyone playing to be oky doky with this.

Guess what they probably figure they can get away with that kind of thing cause of people like yourself, tell you what take a step back and maybe have a fresh breath of air.

You mistake mild amusement with hostility.

I had my Wheetabix, this morning ;)

Hm.... and what impact would that have on first discoveries?

One of two possible outcomes.

1) The exploration database is linked to the commander database by the unique player id (not their name), so when the name changes on the commander table and someone queries the exploration table, it'll always show the current commander name (most likely)

2) FD failed at basic database management and made the commander id column on the exploration table unlinked and the commander name as a set value, meaning the commander name stays as it was when first registered (extremely unlikely)

As someone pointed out earlier in the thread, xbox discoveries are defined clearly. So the worst that could happen is some systems have Ydiss (Xbox) on them.

And good on them too. I didn't deserve those discoveries ;)

So in case anyone else is wondering, if you don't already have a Microsoft XBox Live account, you can register one at www.xbox.com, using an existing or new Microsoft account, and then change your assigned Gamertag after your account has been registered and your e-mail address has been verified.

WR3ND is now no longer available, by the way. :p

Easy, they tell the xbox peas.. er player they have to change their gamer tag if it conflicts with an existing master ra...er PC user. :p

That does seem reasonable... BUT only if FD then offer to pay for the gamertag change, because it does cost money to do that.

And then you get the problem of people's identities on console being affected across other games. Damnit xxY010sw4g420xxx's reputation on Halo for being a master teabagger is at stake here! :p

I think I am safe from this madness :)

Me too im EdzUp on XBox as well ;)

I can see why everyone is 'miffed' at the prospect for example if someone is being a <derogotory name insert here> in the XBox version using your PC name then people come to the PC version they might hunt down x cmdr and attack thinking they are the same person. Its beyond FDEV's control unfortunately being a M$ system.

Or they talk to microsoft and get them to offer a free name change if a conflict arises with a pc player name.

Looks like we're done here.

You do realize that this has been the case every since the Xbox version went live about a year ago right? As far as I can tell, the world didn't cave in since then.

Secondly, I don't recall there being any "pay for your commander name" so I'm not quite sure what you mean by your claim that you paid for your unique commander name.

To answer the question on first discoveries, they are tagged as "Xbox" if they were done by an Xbox commander.

If a player is reported, FD are capable to tell whether it was an Xbox or PC commander using telemetry.

Finally, since Xbox and PC players are in different instances and never meet each other in space, it's actually very unlikely that they would end up reporting each other. This confusion will more come into play if they ever introduce cross play with Xbox, but in that case I suspect they would put some kind of platform symbol on the HUD.

Edit: I do remember in the original kickstarter you could pledge for a commander ending in Jameson or something like that, but that was never available on Xbox so those would be unique.

I am eagerly awaiting the next ED community "scandal" tomorrow night.

Definetly done now.

Definitely, definitely done now.

Get to it, guys. Go reserve your Xbox names now. Job done.

No need. You can go reserve your name right now.

Actually, i think i'd like to outsource my xbox name to someone else.

If they could go around getting first discovered tags on as much of the galaxy as possible, it would be great.

Any applicants?

Salary is peanuts, but you get the satisfaction of knowing you are helping put my tag all over the galaxy. Hours might be long and unrewarding for you.

On Xbox One the Commander name is their gamertag, which isn't controlled by us.

Michael
I wonder if and why Microsoft would insist that FDs character name selection would HAVE to be their gamer tag?
Could it be that Microsoft wanted to ensure that their player base have unique names and didn't trust FD to do that?
Why couldn't FD just have their own character name selector for Xbox? Does seem strange. I guess Microsoft protecting their player base was a condition to FD weren't in position to turn down but surely if an xbox user signed in with a pre-existing pc name then FD could add some discreet but identifyable flag and indeed vice versa!
Is this normal with all xbox games? No character name choice beyond gamer tag?

Haha, what an offer. I'll bet there will be hundreds of Xbox players scrabbling to have your identity.
It's already taken.

And do they play Elite?

Because MS is MS.
