So lets get this straight.. Our commander names are no longer unique?

I wonder if and why Microsoft would insist that FDs character name selection would HAVE to be their gamer tag?
Could it be that Microsoft wanted to ensure that their player base have unique names and didn't trust FD to do that?
Why couldn't FD just have their own character name selector for Xbox? Does seem strange. I guess Microsoft protecting their player base was a condition to FD weren't in position to turn down but surely if an xbox user signed in with a pre-existing pc name then FD could add some discreet but identifyable flag.

Mostly this is the issue I have with the whole situation. How was it not possible to make our in game names be something other than gamertags like countless other mmos have done previously?

I have never seen it done on Xbox to be honest. PC, sure. Handheld console games, sure. Xbox? No...

Does Sony place the same restriction? Will be interesting to see if a port ever comes for PS.

How about, having xbox players type in a commander name when creating thier commander? Seems easy enough.

Also, this can be applied retroactively when the update called "commanders" comes out, which allows you to make "a unique commander "

Seems reasonable to me.

They can't. Microsoft restrict all Xbox games this way. There's nothing FD can do to change it. Like any developer that makes an Xbox game where the players have an IGN.

One of two possible outcomes.

1) The exploration database is linked to the commander database by the unique player id (not their name), so when the name changes on the commander table and someone queries the exploration table, it'll always show the current commander name (most likely)

2) FD failed at basic database management and made the commander id column on the exploration table unlinked and the commander name as a set value, meaning the commander name stays as it was when first registered (extremely unlikely)

As someone pointed out earlier in the thread, xbox discoveries are defined clearly. So the worst that could happen is some systems have Ydiss (Xbox) on them.

And good on them too. I didn't deserve those discoveries ;)

I changed name on PC and FD told me "the commander name stays as it was when first registered"

It's the same if you change gamertag on XBOX

What madness is this?

You what?

So if I have this right, whilst we all share the same galaxy our commander names are now only unique to each platform (i.e. xbox, PC, PS4, linux, etc..).

Without being rude I'd like to point out that many of us paid to reserve our commander names for the game. Shouldn't our commanders be unique to the galaxy?

On Xbox One your commander name is your Xbox Live Gamertag. You can't actually choose a name on the Xbox version. So if someone happens to have the exact same Gamertag as you have in the PC version then both of you will be called the same. But you'll never meet or interact in any form because players from the two platforms can't be on the same server.

I stand corrected. Come to think of it, they probably did it this way to maintain exploration firsts in the event of an account being deleted or save reset.

Just to remind .. the issue is more to do with things like First Discovery Tags rather that 'bumping into yourself'. ID fraud for streamers or actions that develop reddit PvP bounties and such, that can migrate platforms. You could say have an xBox ObsidianAnt causing havoc .. in ways that might damage (community) reputations. Not ideal.

First discoveries are marked as Xbox according to earlier posts in this thread. And if gamertag ObsidianAnt was "causing havoc" on Xbox, it'd be obvious if it was our wasn't the same person.

Needless to say, has this actually happened once since xbox went live? It's been more than a year now.

Rubbish, ED was concieved as PC game. So I'm out exploring and come across a system I have yet to visit, only to find that I have actually visited it, because its got my name on it, even though I've never been there before.

OUr commander name identifies us in the game.. This is idiotic. [wacko]

You probably shouldn't have called yourself 'Bob' then :D

Of course problem is, now it's out there, there could be ways to other exploit people's IP, if people put their minds to it. The game belongs to Frontier but if players spend time and effort developing a roleplay identity, blogging, streaming etc. that ultimately helps ED in terms of promoting the game. So it's not really fair if that fan support gets undermined and is for that kind of reason that (I think) Frontier should at least try to take a look at it. Don't think it's worth getting shrill over but not a 'non' issue imo. And not entirely straightforward to sort out either.

And if there were 20 console Kaywegs tagging celestials, i would still have received my payout and explorer ranking for the ones i tagged.
It doesn't matter to me if orange ball #45.833
got tagged by this Kayweg or anotherone...let alone the ridiculously low odds for me to ever find out if there was another player with my name.
This is one of the weirdest threads i've seen on this forum, fueled by nothing more than hurt vanity.

Commander Ydiss slaughters newbies and exploits on XBOX.

XBOX players get angry at Ydiss on XBOX.

No one on PC cares. Least of all me.

Last time I checked, Cosmo had buggered off to the pub. But this hot controversy is still raging! Who'd a thunk it...

Well actually on reading this, I decided to feel absolutely horrified that I can troll meself in such ways, so have spent half the night arguing with meself...so having accounts on both platforms means Im trolling meself...now thats novelty right there...worth every penny just to have the chance to get one over on that verm bollox...Ill show me...haha priceless.

Why not use solution like in Starcraft 2 or Diablo 3? Pick any name you want and you get hidden but checkable ID after your nick. John#3512 but you'll see him as John. Discovered by John#3512.

Wow... Just, wow...

Guys, get over it. FD can't control Xbox names.

Microsoft insists that Live account names are used in games on the Xbox platform for several reasons, chief of which is to be able to quickly identify cheaters, ToS breachers, etc.

That's just life. Sometimes the guy with the deeper pockets, in this case Microsoft, gets the only say in this matter.

Yes, that does mean you'll have to accept that there might be an Xbox account using the same name as you, and an even smaller chance that account plays Elite on Xbox.

There is literally nothing you can do about it.
