Ramblings of a VR newcomer.

So just thought now I've got it all working well and had a little time immersed in the Rift that I'd share my experience with VR so far, I've been a gamer on and off since the early days of Spectrum, Commodore 64 etc but never tried out VR in any form before using this Rift CV1, gaming and VR however have always been something that's interested me.

I brought myself a new PC about six months ago after not having one for about five or six years, was only playing consoles as these days I still sometimes look forward to new games coming out but often get board with them after around 20 hours or so played.
I was looking up No Mans Sky as I've always had an interest in Astronomy, Cosmology and more recently Mathematics so NMS seemed right up my street.
While looking up about NMS development on YouTube I saw two things, Space Engine and Elite and knew right then it was time to get into PC gaming.
Luckily I did as NMS from what I've read didn't turn out too good?
Elite however has turned out to be the best game I've ever played and that's even before experiencing it in VR! Space Engine is also an awesome experience so no regrets.

Anyway back to the point, ok I'd read a lot about Oculus from this site and others so was well aware of the pros and cons but even so it's still hard to tell whether you're going to like it not, that's why I'm writing this as just another point of view to maybe help you in deciding whether it's for you.

My main concerns before buying it were....

God Rays,
Resolution,
Rift Face was a minor concern,
The Rift lenses steaming up/getting hot and just being uncomfortable to use.

God Rays are so minimal for me they're no problem whatsoever! Don't know if I got lucky with my Rift or if I'm just not sensitive to them but I never notice them even in Elite which I hear is the worst for them.
If I try to see them I can but I see much worse GRs on a slightly greasy car windscreen.
I was actually going to put GRs down to slightly greasy glass on my Ship if they were as bad as some say but no need.
I'll add to this SDE, again never notice it unless I'm looking for it.

Resolution, ok this does take a hit, a pretty big hit and if like me you're coming from a 48inch 4KTV playing in Ultra it's a massive hit!
Not going to lie but after really enjoying the Dream Deck my first impression of Elite in VR wasn't that mind blowing feeling a lot of people experience, it didn't help that I had a few teething issues getting Elite to work smoothly on my set up so that took away some of the initial wow factor as I was constantly peeking under the nose gap checking frame rates and temps etc.
It took a few sessions before I stopped playing like I do on my TV and then it really started to feel like I was actually inside my Ship flying through Space, now I've sorted the problem I was having it's everything I hoped it would be and more!
You just can't overestimate how much realism is added when everything has depth and more importantly scale! 1 to 1 scale makes everything so immense and epic it's hard to explain but trust me, what you lack in resolution you more than make up for with presence and so much presence you can actually feel the flying you are doing.

Rift Face was only a minor concern, don't want to sound to vain but I didn't really want big red lines over my face but again it's no problem whatsoever when you get the straps set right.
I've found it best to get the back Triangle right down on the back of your head, get the top strap supporting the weight of the headset and then tighten the side straps just enough to keep the Triangle low on the back of your head, this way I never get Rift Face and only get a couple of small pinkish marks on the sides of my forehead that go after about 2 minutes.

Comfort level is also good, I often have a fan lightly blowing on me when in the Rift and the air goes through the nose gap, keeps the lenses clear from steaming up and keeps my face nice and cool.

Basically my concerns about the Rift all turned out to be a nonissue, even the resolution as even though obviously when it improves in the future it will be great! The sense of actually flying in the Elite Universe more than makes up for it.
Just go to a Planet and see the huge size of it! Fly close over its surface looking at the rolling hills, massive mountain ranges and deep canyons and you'll be sold.
Flying over the ridge of an impact crater and watching the ground literally drop out from under you through the glass foot panels in an Asp gives you that feeling in your stomach of real height and speed!
Try turning your Ship to the side to roll around the lip of said crater and it feels as though you could actually fall out the Side of your Ship! No Monitor however big or detailed could ever give you anything close to that and that's just two examples of many.

To sum up, if all you could play on the Rift was Elite and nothing else I'd still happily pay the money for it and wouldn't regret it one bit! It has to be the closest thing to actually flying you can get right now and it's Awsome!

TLDR....
Rift is Awesome! Buy one, steal one or if you can make one because the future is here!

Oh one last thing....
VR sickness,

Seems I've got the stomach of a Fighter Pilot as I can throw my Ships around as hard as possible and never feel sick at all, felt a little odd a couple of times in my very first combat experiences but even in the SRV I'm good, felt a little strange without horizon lock but not sick.
If you wanna feel VR sickness I got it after about an hour in the Vanishing of Ethan Carter so I'm not completely immune lol, looks so good in VR though!

See you in the black.

resolution you get used too, I went down from 1440p and at first glace, it looked a pixelated mess. Then after a while I found I didn't really notice it anymore, getting the writing nice and clear was the main thing. I do get rift face after a few hours, but the lines go quick enough, as does the comedy hair strip down the middle of my head.

Motion sickness you'll also toughen up too, tick the lock horizon box in the graphics settings, or the SRV is likely to make you hurl.

The rift isn't without it's faults and les(same applies to the Vive I guess) but the overall experience in VR far far outweighs any quibbles I have.

First of all welcome to the party!

Second: welcome to the gaming revolution! [cool]

It is fun to read so many reviews about 4K-ultra-super-mega-wide-definition screen users falling at the feets of low quality-huge immershun VR Goddess :)
Yeh I'm in your same boat OP. I'm a new Oculus addict too and I can't still believe to my eyes. I will never regret the money I had to squeeze out of my pockets. Not a single Euro. VR is HERE. Welcome to future! \o/

PS: now that you had the WOW experience, jump into the forums and do some little tweaks to supersampling and HMD. It will add some nice quality to the views. :)

Welcome to the world of VR Elite - it's pretty darn awesome isn't it. I pretty much concur with all of your sentiments there and, like you, I've basically got over all of my initial problems. I too miss the clear high resolution display (and I never even made it to 4K), so much so in fact that I do still switch back to playing on the monitor occasionally (so I can grab beautiful screenshots and videos). It's a jarring experience tho - having TrackIR helps but once you've seen ED in VR you can never un-see it!

One question - you didn't say what sort of rig you've got. As others have said there are some nice tweaks to the graphics settings to get the most out of your system. I posted my own findings re: the settings that work best for me over here ..

P.S. I did a similar rambling post after my first experiences which may (or may not) be of interest ...

(actually, re-reading that it sounds like I was actually quite disappointed with ED in VR - I'm happy to say that's improved a lot now and I love it)

Welcome to VR :)

What helps for me with face and hair is a simple bandana. I normally wear one under my MTB helmet, but no reason it should not work with Rift and it does :)

The closest thing to flying for me would be DCS. Flying a space ship, yep that would be ED. I agree if I only had Elite in VR it would be worth it. Same could be said for DCS, Dirt Rally, Assetto Corsa and a couple of others.

Welcome to the new world. There is no going back.

AeroFly is very good.

If you want to push your VR stomach limits. Lay flat on the floor. Stare straight up. Recenter. Launch.

Your eyes and body go "eff you!"

:)

Tip: Heating the headset first prevents the lenses steaming up. I have a kerosene heater in my gaming room (don't ask) so I place the HMD on the floor a couple of feet from it for a couple of minutes before strapping on.

Thanks all for the welcome, tips and suggestions.

Cheers Junky, been doing a bit of tweaking over the last couple of days and got a good mix of detail and smoothness now.
Lol yeah it's so sweet ain't it!

Alec yeah man I remember reading your post a few weeks ago when I was contemplating getting the Rift, I remember your avatar.
I know what you mean, I went back to my TV briefly after the first couple of days in VR when I was having a bit of trouble with it and thought, this is still great VR hasn't ruined me.
Another four days in the Rift later I go back to TV just because I was winging up with another CMDR I sometimes play with and we type quite a lot, man it felt so small, flat and restricted! Doesn't help that I don't have Trackir so very limited view and I couldn't wait to get back into VR.
I still like it in 2D but will only play that way once in a blue moon for a taste of beauty.
Not that it's not beautiful in VR, I mean just go mining in a pristine metallic ring and watch your Collector Limpets busily gathering rocks you've just blasted off, look out your side window and see the massive, distant Gas Giant you're all orbiting and tell me that's not stunning, it might be lower resolution but it's huge, it's there and it's all around you!

I've got a pretty decent Rig...
i56600,
GTX 1080,
8 Gig Ram that I'll be adding to soon.

Keeping 90FPS in Elite VR really hits my CPU load hard though in Stations and Rez.
I think it's bottleneckin my GPU so might have to upgrade in the future, as I say above though getting a great experience in it now with nice visuals and smooth gameplay, not 100% smooth but well it is Elite after all lol.

Dogbite, downloaded DCS last night and just went through a few training missions, seems great so far!
If I can drag myself away from Elite long enough I could see me getting into this and you're right, this is closer to normal flying no doubt.

Thanks Dree I'll check it out.

Right, I'm off to see these Alien Ruins I've heard so much about!

Easily the best VR experience available at the moment, and I have close to 100 on Steam. Played any of them a maximum of 45 to 60 mins. Been playing Elite for almost 100 hours, and I've only owned it since Christmas.

I'm hooked on Adr1ft at the moment. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter as well. Both are awesome in VR

I'm yet to try The Vanishing with the new VR DLC. Perhaps this weekend if time permits!

Whilst I've never felt VR sick, I have noticed lately that after long stints of ED, my brain will sometimes think I'm rolling and my vision will momentarily spin.
It's an odd feeling that serves as a reminder to how desperately I can't wait to get back home and put on my Vive again lol.

Haven't tried either, but own both! Will definitely need to give them a go. Having a YouTube channel, I get so many free games from developers that I unfortunately never get around to ever playing, so it helps when something comes recommended.

Did you ever try Vanishing Realms? That's brilliant. I also really enjoy The Thrill of the Fight, though I think this title would probably most appeal to those who have an interest in fighting or who do martial arts/boxing in real life. Still loads of fun though!

My experience was similar; I didn't ever get a sick/nausea type feeling. It was more akin to the sensation of putting someone’s prescription glasses on when I don't wear glasses, myself.

Lol. I'd best describe it as similar to the feeling you get after a very long, turbulent flight or cruise, where you'll be laying in bed and you'll suddenly jump because your brain still thinks you're moving. It's kind of like that after I play ED lol.
