In addition to my last post here. It would also be good to see HUD Colours available in the store, then one could use many and assign them individually to ones ships so they appear to be ship specific.....in my mind.

Big NO from here. I like it! I've tried some of the artificial color schemes and found them a lot worse than the original.
Also haven't seen any video yet with modified HUD colors that came even remotely to something I could enjoy.

Clearly it's a personal taste issue, for me I don't think the stock orange colors are bad, in fact I like the style. In VR however they tend to blur/bleed and aren't as easy to read as a lighter color like blue or even green and white. Here's a quick video of my HUD in game, it's in VR so it's a bit (lot) jerky as it tracks every movement of my head (and I'm an animated talkers). Curious what you think.

...an official and flexible way to alter HUD colors would be awesome

Have a look at Dr. Kaii's Launcher app (Google it). It's a simple launcher (for the launcher) that let's you set everything about the graphics and when you start the game it writes those changes to the config file before it starts. You can create profiles, etc., it's a great way to test various settings and their impacts. One part lets you change the HUD colors, you just need the color codes from the site that's been previously leaked (or I can post it again later if needed)

It would also be good to see HUD Colours available in the store...

So long as they were free that's a very cool idea. HUDs that someone really spent time on to make sure everything really makes sense with the colors chosen. Customizable HUDs / layouts would be awesome too, I'm sure that's very far down the list as it'd be a lot of work to create all the new HUD elements.

Just please, no more micro transactions!

So you have no problem reading the red and orange text?
I have no problem with the red and orange text, but it's still much sharper in blue.

I use the Dodger_Blue theme from EDProfiler. It works a treat, and NPC portraits are fine.

Hostiles: dark blue
Neutrals: powder blue
Friendlies: peppermint

Could you link to an official statement?
It was in a livestream, I think.

But that doesn't give you red hostiles and green friendlies, and human skin tones does it.

Why I have never bothered - I can't see any issues reading the orange text in my CV1, and seeing as the palette seems to be a shared resource for other things, I'd rather the other thinvs (like skin tones) stayed looking good.

Z...

Voted yes. It would be a big improvement for VR. I've had to use a custom colour scheme, predominantly green and blue. Enemies are still red, so only the portraits are bad, which is a compromise I can live with.

FD, it would be great if the HUD colour schemes were improved, please.

If you mean skin tone for the portraits in say the mission board they look totally fine to me. You're right that I don't see enemies in red but I do see friendlies in green. My colors might be different but it's not like I can't tell what's what. I've been using it for so long when I see the stock colors they look odd to me.

To each his own, it's great that we can change is at all.

I would respectfully counter your statement using this logic.... you state HUD customisation is "very far down the line" and you wish "no more micro transactions". But think perhaps from this perspective ..... In-store micro transactions (like the £1 laser colours and decals) allow for a self sustaining creation of this coding separate to the main game.
In addition, the longer term benefits of micro transactions would enable Frontier to expend their team thus speeding up development across the board.

Sorry, let me better explain. I'm very biased against any form of microtransactions as in general I think they're hurting games as they are making development teams focus on the wrong things while creating a game. That said I really don't have any issue with cosmetic items or rather any item that doesn't affect gameplay. If it in any way helps with gameplay (faster leveling, exclusive weapons, etc) I'll absolutely pass. I have no interest in "winning" a game with my wallet or play against other player's wallets.

While I can't really argue with them selling different HUD colors, much like the weapons, the cat's already out there as we've been able to change those colors for as long as I've played the game. Turning that feature into a microtransaction would of me and many other players. I would support and likely buy a newly styled HUD, while I like the current HUD and think it's rather well done getting to switch to a new one would bring a good deal of fresh air into the game.

In general I think Frontier has done a fantastic job with Elite and I really like the way they are slowly releasing new content rather than wait until every feature they want is done. I will also agree that it's in our best interest for Frontier to make money and do well so they can keep cranking out code for us. Given how relatively easy it is to do the color mods they've done so far I'm sure that's a huge cash cow for them. Hell I bought several black Friday skins when they were out, my first ever microtransactions. I mean wow, have you see the Imperial Eagle in black? Wow, looks fantastic. I bought the tactical pack for my Courier and the combinations of mat colors, etc. make it look even better.

Thoughts?

FD should revisit the HUD colour scheme, definitely.

I'm happy with the default orange, but other colours and schemes should be available for use without wrecking the enemy/friendly, better/worse colours or the in-station personnel images etc.

All of the ED GUI elements will be named and assigned a colour, so while its not an insignificant job, opening those names up and assigning an RGB value or range should be possible.

I have never seen a colour scheme setup like ED's before, and I'm left wondering if there's any improved efficiency over a named-element with colourisation for each element system.

Did many have to buy the Black Friday skins? I seem to get that skin for every ship, and for free? (hope that's not a bug! I'm on a lifetime pass though). Corvette looks great in sleek black.

ED's HUD should be opened up for customisation and even re-placement of the graphics - FD could hold competitions for best new HUD UI, and different UI's could be designed for the different ships or manufacturers.

I mean, a Camry has a different dash-board to a truck etc...

I have a condition that makes certain shades of red light painfull to look at for more than a few seconds at a time, I wear special glasses when at work to filter it out from the screens and lights used. It's not just red lights but also bright white led light that triggers me due to the red content in them, new car brake lights are the worst as they are hyper bright LEDs. When playing on screen I could manage it but in VR I have no choice but to modify it.

I use a light blue and white set up that seems to work, even though it has red content in the White. I also have the brightness turned right down on the hud.
If there was a fix to allow it to be official in game, at least then I wouldn't have to play in the Zombie version of the universe.

I have zero issues reading the text. Not sure why people are having problems to be honest. I said other. I would to see the HUD colour be able to be changeable to what ever you want within the options panel. I would likely keep it as is.

I think a part of it is that Frontier's choice of the HUD color, orange, requires multiple subpixels to display, whereas using a color that requires a single subpixel to display (red, green, blue). On current generations HMDs, this simply makes smaller text harder to read, simply because there isn't enough pixels for higher resolution, leading to what is effectively 20/40 vision in-game.

Another part of it, at least for Vive users like me, is that for some reason when Elite: Dangerous sends graphics to SteamVR, there seems to be a boost in brightness, making the game look washed out. Yesterday, when I gave the "Night Mode" setting a try, I noticed an immediate jump in legibility, even in the comm panel, which I used to have to lean forward to read. It also helps that I keep my gamma correction settings low, so I can experience "true darkness" in the game.

I think FDEV need to re-visit the HUD customization for all users at some point, its a highly demanded feature along with ship naming. While being able to change HUD colour is an advantage to VR users in particular I'd personally rather see some of the more "VR centric" issues resolved first. I find the borked shadows, planets missing textures, rotating smoke (and sun flares and SC trails), ships missing exterior body sections etc etc to be far more distracting in VR than the HUD (which I find perfectly legible in my Rift).

I find the default looks fine. Having an orange or any color more on the red warm spectrum will be easier on the eyes and not wreck your "night" vision.

I tried a light blue, white and green, but found that it stressedmy eyes.

A few options is always nice for everyone, but I think the default orange is the best for me.

What I really would like to see is a 3 slider in graphics setup to adjust your hud to your likings with basic user comfort, instead munipulate .ini files manually.
That implemented will save disc space for addional 2000 replies to come over the years.

Regards,
Miklos
