PvP (Open) commanders not welcome on this forum?...

I know we have heated debates, but recent events sadden me.

I recently visited a PvP discord. I learned that they were hosting a PvP event. I asked why they weren't posting it here on the official forum, and the reply was:

"Forums aren't the place for pvp. Posters only cry about it, mods don't like it. Everyone who would be interested is on reddit or on the discord servers we posted to."

The one I spoke with didn't care to elaborate, so I'll just leave the comment here. But I'm genuinely surprised that the official forum isn't considered the goto platform for all who play Elite: Dangerous.

Maybe I'm just unaware of the importance of reddit and discord. Or that this forum was considered toxic by PvPers. I asked if it would be frowned upon if I shared the event here, and got no reply. Consent through silence I guess. So here's a link. It sounds like fun:

See you in the black commanders. :)

(talk about a divided community... :()

Dude, people cry about how hard NPC AI is here. They cry about how hard trading is. They cry about how hard it is to travel from one end of the bubble to the other. They cry that they aren't running the Federation Navy after 2 sessions of grinding rep. They cry that paying the game 18MCr to transport their 300MCr warship across the bubble is too expensive and takes too long.

PVP? Real competition and risk? You're in the wrong neighborhood friend. And it's a damn shame.

Just how do you think a pvp tournament promoted by one Harry Potter would be received on this forum? How would that thread pan out?

Rep for attitude.

Pretty much this :)

Full disclosure, I get popped or run more often than not when I unwisely try PVP, so I'm no expert. But I'll still go with the flow as long as I don't have any tasty cargo or somewhere to be. Sometimes I'm the hammer, sometimes the nail. that's life, and its why I play only in open, and only ever have played in open. Not making some grand statement, that's just how I play.

Regarding naming and shaming Harry Potter, most pilots who have some light years under their belt already know his name, and I don't think shame even registers on that dude's radar. I haven't met him in game, but I've met some from SDC in the past. It went exactly how you imagine it went. But I hold no grudge, and I do think they're a valuable part of the game. For instance, 13th Legion wouldn't exist if it wasn't for SDC and those like them.

That might be the most damning thing I've ever heard about SDC.

How do you figure? I thought the 13th was more or less a player militia focused on fighting "gankers?"

Maybe saying 13th "wouldn't exist" is a bit too far, but I thought fighting the proverbial "bad guys" is their raison d'être?

Soooo. I wouldn't say they are unwelcome but certain PvP'ers have jaded a large portion of the community here against PvP. In a lot of cases this isn't even because they like PvP, it's because of their attitude.

Without naming names a fair few high profile PvPers seemed to be very direct, at times aggressive and didn't tend to phrase things diplomatically. Some PvP'ers are deliberately out there to cause strife and issues and farm said salt.

The things that are important are:
1) Not all PvP'ers are like this.
2) PvE'ers have just as many people that fit the description above.

Issue is because PvP as an activity is often direct, aggressive and undiplomatic. This means the "image" has stuck which in turn means that often valid complaints and discussions by PvP'ers are often not seen as such and promptly ripped on.

Long and short of it is sadly the many decent people that engage in PvP were rapidly unable to change the image and the mindset of each side developed from there with one side being labelled as griefers and the other as carebears. Sadly the many decent humans on both sides are drowned out by the pack mentality as one side starts attacking the other side.

Me personally I hate all of them and have joined our Thargoid overlords as they fear not if their opponent is PvP or PvE, they don't even care if the player is in Open/Solo! Join the fairest faction of them all today!!

Edit: As for the record I rarely do PvP, I do a lot of co-op and I do a lot of event based things with various groups. I have joined competitions in the past and enjoyed them, I also plan to do more in the future when I get time to get in game properly again. Saying the only people that would be interested are on reddit/discord is a downright falsehood. If I wasn't swamped at work and irl I'd be looking for stuff exactly like this. Sad really that they think that.

Let's face it, OP, while there may be a majority of PvP'ers out there who generally like a good, sporting fight, there are also plenty who use the game's lack of an adequate crime and punishment system to engage and kill other CMDRs who are just going about their day, without due in-game consequence, and just for the "lulz". This leads folks who enjoy less aggressive activities (trading, exploring, missions etc.) to harbor distrust or disdain for the dedicated PvP community. So, when those folks (the PvP'ers) post here, they are met with the same jeers and a lack of respect that the PvE crowd feels has been dealt to them. The dedicated PvP community is reaping what it has sown, even if only a portion of them were involved in the planting.

I'd say you thought wrong.

A known Ganker, but that's starting to toe the naming and shaming line...
Ok. Thanks guys. Personally, I consider Open mode "cutthroat", so if it's possible to do, it's ok by me:

Is it really the general opinion that the official forum doesn't welcome Open/PvP content?

Wow, that tastes like salt from the PvP crowd.

But seriously, everyone is welcome and everyone has to expect that some will not agree with them.

I think the issue is that one PvPer will go off the handle and then everyone else who hates PvP begins to brigade the thread until only one opinion is available. I've seen it happen too many times.

I can tell you now that he finds no shame in being named.

That might be the most damning thing I've ever heard about SDC.

I find this weird because 13th popped up long after sdc and have been ganking noobs in Eravate for over a month now. Doesn't seem like they have anything to do with sdc at all, other then dying to them of course.
