"just because there are 100,000 ships in an instance, who says you have to render all of them?"

If I've paid thousands of dollars for my chariot of death, it better had get rendered. [mad]

Christ.

"Your PC is capable of rendering 100,000+ separate entities"

A ship is not a bleeping entity. It's a whole load of different entities.

Yes it is. It just has children entities.
Calling them 'entities' is definitely correct enough

That said, he definitely has put at least two extra zeros to that number.
Or maybe I just don't understand armchair development again ...

Whoever said that needs to try Planetside 2 at extra busy peak hours - when there are so many players in one area, that aircraft, tanks and infantry do not render until you are a couple of meters away from them.

And don't forget, inside each of these superbly rendered chariots are dozens of commandos re-enacting scenes from Das Boot, and NPC's telling anyone who will listen, their extremely interesting backstories.

Right, I keep hearing this "people say *thing* is impossible, we sure showed them" statement.

1. No one in the last 40 years at least have said creating an electric car was impossible, it's widely known to be possible but incredibly costly and also enviromentally challenging due to the current tech of batteries generally producing more carbon to create and having a short lifespan than what a normal petroleum powered car would produce over it's intended lifespan.

2. No one has ever said creating a multiplayer space game with ships and fps was impossible and there are many examples of multiplayer (both mmo and arena) spacey games with both fps and vehicles, but many have said that CIG would likely fail at trying.

CIG have spent over a year trying to make an airlock door function correctly, the complete and permenant fix still eludes them to this day. Time does not always mean better, some things when they were designed were flawless in ways that even the creators didn't expect and have stood the test of time with no one else being able to better the initial design or build. A lot of people think taking longer or spending more money on things always results in improvement, it doesn't and it is an incredibly naive and limiting view.

The creation of SC is likely not possible for CIG with it's current leadership and working practices in regards to sensible time and budget constraints, they spend to much money on faffing and waste too much time on superflous oddities in order to increase the cash and drag out the time. In other words, they are too busy trying to drag in money and placate backers to give them more time constantly rather than just getting on with making something that is actually quite simple. Maybe had they not spent far too much time making flash ship commercials and fluff vids they could have poured that energy into actually designing a solid tech foundation to build on.

People keep chasing this "they said it was impossible" thing everytime someone comes up with a lightbulb that is slightly dimmer and has a shorter operational lifespan than the one it was designed to replace and someone else had said beforehand that "probably not a good idea", as if somehow just saying the words makes it an incredible achievement over all odds. CIG are not competent, disiplined or knowledgable enough to make a door work, yet they are going to reinvent the very complex and tightly managed way in which someone else's server farms communicate with each other and client systems over a worldwide stage and give it 100x it's current efficiency for their computer game? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, yeah, sure boss. :D

This is very weird. Why on earth would they be doing this?

Two possibilities spring to mind:

(a) Sheer petty-mindedness. They want to be awkward just because they can.

(b) Refunds are actually hurting their bank balance in a significant way.

If it is the former, I'd say it was ill-advised, since people may instead assume that it is the latter - making them more likely to ask for refunds now, on the basis that they may not be able to get them later. Which might well result in the latter occurring anyway. The last thing that CIG are should be doing is giving the impression that they are in financial difficulty if they aren't.

, and misguided treehuggers putting the lesser spotted runny-bottom virus before decent internet :D

... wat? I'm going to interpret that behind that childish taunt you are talking about environmentalists. Apparently people in positions of power with a nature conservationist mindset.

So, exactly how are these environmentalists slowing down the development of the network backbone? Where and how is this happening, and who are these powerful, dastardly "treehuggers"?

And people wonder where the money is going.
As we often say in this thread, the programmers and artists at CIG are excellent. It's the hand-wavy thinkers plonkers they have in charge are the problem.

I guess that also was the reason for their forum not being available recently. Just pointing out how CiG didnt think it was necessary to INFORM their playerbase / community over that measure. Sure its not a binding "must" but it would ve been a nice gesture with all that "open development" talk you know....

CiG just demonstrates again that the backers are actually the LAST thing they think about because those people are already in the sack and being milked. Probably why news and information, even tho complained about by the community numerous times, STILL appear first on third-party websites or news sites and the backers as a whole are left in the dark without explanations.

Spectrum LOOKS more nice thats for sure....maybe that was the reason why CR thought it was needed? You know hes the visual guy.....

I notice the new site has no links to the old forum nor "the pledge". Its probably a good opportunity to "reset" the board getting rid of the increasingly more frequent troll and concern posts who have crept up over the last couple months. There simply is no valid or sane reason to simply throw away years of feedback and ideas in that manner. Or maybe CiG simply forgot and is sitting on that threasure of information (same as they sit on SQ42 which is almost done remember?).

+1, indeed beautifull, enjoyed reading it a lot.

It just shows that whenever you approach Star Citizen with interest and try to make up your mind evaluating all possible information the outcome is directly dependant on your psyche. First you ll realize there is hardly any data available when it comes to cold hard facts. Try to find a release date and you ll stumble across 2014 with all kinds of dates up to the present day. Try to find a hard fact list of features and you ll find arguments and discussions about the topic because everybody is in disarray and has different understandings when it comes to that topic. CiG might list features but strangely enough those listed features are nowhere to be found. If you have an inkling of technical understanding about computers, networking and so forth you ll have that exact same thought

How on earth is the finished game even going to be playable? Judging by the demo videos and the size of the world(s) being created, I can't imagine there's a computer that exists that can play this game smoothly. Not to mention the SIZE of the game...this looks like it will take up terabytes of hard drive space!

And again.....there is no technical explanation apart from handwaving and wish-wash talks along with the faithful stumbling over each other to offer fantastic explanations all different to each other.

In short.....the more you try to dig into Star Citizen from a NEUTRAL standpoint the more confused you become. That is IF you manage to control yourself, dont fall for the hype and simply make a leap of faith with your wallet. Some peoples behaviour in this regard reminds me of dogs getting so excited when you even LOOK at the door that they cant help themselves anymore. Making an educated decision based on facts tho....much more difficult. Star Citizen simply is DESIGNED to whoosh you with its videos and announcements. It all sounds fantastic. Probably also the reason why it had almost nobody in the beginning who was sceptical. Only when they started to deliver stuff did some people realize the MASSIVE discrepancy between announcement and reality and started to ask the tough questions. The rest is history and well known by anybody who follows the project long enough.

eldusto84 hits the nail on the head with his carefull impression

Like I said, the game looks awesome but I am very skeptical about whether it will actually deliver on its promises. It's hard not to look at the pledge packages ($15k for ships, etc) and see Star Citizen as an indefinite Alpha release that generates income.

...and that is BEFORE he gets familiar with the game and sees the mess thats available first-hand.

The questions asked are coming up time and time again as well. Other "better-run" companies make it a habit to conglomerate (that term just popped into my head, I m very proud of myself :D) these questions into a large FAQ thread covering these topics. CiG leaves it to its base of faithfuls who are always ready to come up with an excu.......explanation which might difer a lot depending on how many people answer :)

This reply given by a SC-fan is classic

No. Squadron 42 and Star Citizen are separate games, however Squadron 42 will have events that effect your character in Star Citizen.

Note that SQ42 is a fiction at this point. Neither have we seen a single SECOND of trailer nor gameplay nor has CiG deemed it necessary to offer any hard facts about it (length, topics, effects on the main game) you could expect from some one who claims to be as far with it as they state (nearly done, jus wait a few more days, we dont want to spoil anything tho so no trailer sorry). SQ42 is as pure a dream as it can be at this point but they expect people to pay hard money for access. SELLING A DREAM. Its never been more true as in SQ42 ^^

The person replying is not an employee nor a representative of CiG yet he speaks with absolute determination ("will have events that effect") selling the "product" as if these things were reality. It underlines nicely how many people surrounding the SC project enveloped themselves into an alternate reality to live their dream even now. Chris Roberts is the savior and simply perfect. He knows what hes doing, trust Chris Roberts tho he will bring us deliverance, Derek Smart is the devil, dont believe a single word of him. He will be the fall of paradi.....Star Citizen.

Its at least nice to see that the berkserker-style selling strategy has at least changed its tone and sceptical people are advised to stay away as these "troublemakers" simply would generate more fuss and disturbance (to the force :D) and god knows SC has enough of these dissenters already.

Other statements are equally baffling

Star Marine is already out and isn't a separate purchase.

Are we talking about the bare-bone, glitchy and ugly boring run-n-gun FPS which has no stand-out features and just feels meh? Funny I thought the very first alpha iteration of SM was released for testing? "Already out" would indicate "done deal" which is not the case. If this is simply over-excitement by a SC-fan trying to score points, ignorance or malicious intent to reel in more backer-fish I cant say. Mostly I d think that a high % of the faithfull speak from a point of ignorance, simply dont know but also dont care because they are already living the dream (dreaming about the stuff they are going to do with their 15.000 dollar chariots, enforcing their belief by listing all the cool features that are already IN to themselves - enforcing the self-delusion)

Comparisons made in defense of Star Citizen refering to Blizzard or Move companies are simply pushing your narrative on successfull things in order to change the appearance failing to realize that these companies operate under completely different conditions (self-owned money, publisher) and also had a much FASTER rate of development.

For the record, the majority of backers have the base $45 SC only package or the $60 package that includes S42

That subreddit thread is filled with comments like that one. I mean how can that person KNOW? As far as I know the number of backers as well as the total amount of money collected at this point are reason to arguments yet he speaks as if he KNOWS. Whats his source? Where does his knowledge come from? Is it faith?
Makes you wonder WHO the amrchair developer really is. Or is that label only reserved for people who bring concern to the topic and offer their own view?

In short. The faithfull trying to reel in another potential backer to make their dream a reality really DOESNT help in this case but makes sure to grab the gullibes simply by the nature of their reponse (act as if the dream is reality already).
