Tips for a new player?

Use some of the external trade tools to help maximise profit if that's a way you want to make credits. EDDB is a good one https://eddb.io/

Also using EDMC will update the markets automatically when you dock. https://github.com/Marginal/EDMarketConnector/wiki

There's a good list of 3rd party tools here. http://edcodex.info/?m=tools
Looking at these tools, in quite suprised how diverse and unique some are. Do you use any, and if so, which ones.
Also, i noticed multiole graphic tools. Which one is best?

Try everything once
No rebuy = No fly
Mining is the best way to earn while your attention is on Netflix
Sagittarius A* is well worth the trip, but it's a big time commitment
Try not to sell ships, you don't get all the money back when you do.
Screenshots are on F10
Don't panic

The screenshot point made me laugh

When you're looking at buying a new ship, you can use Coriolis to plan outfitting and make sure it's within your budget. Inara or EDDB will help you find stations which sell the modules and ships you want to buy.

Also, systems controlled by Li Yong-Rui sell ships and modules at 15% discount, which also reduces your insurance cost by 15%. Inara and EDDB can both filter for Li Yong-Rui systems when searching for outfitting.

Not been playing long, credits were slow at first and then after trading between two systems I found in eddb.io in a type6 as my reputation incredsed, so did mission rewards.

Only started playing a few weeks ago and have an A rated Python and Fer-De-Lance, just by becoming Allied to a few minor factions and doing missions.

Would also try and find a nice group of players willing to give you a hand, think there are even people who offer to help mentor new players.

A good way to progress IMO is to find a site with low, high and Haz Res, start in the low using the police as helpful security. After a little while your rating with various factions goes up and then turn your attention to the mission boards. A cobra can work very well for this. I think the mission boards can give you an insight into the basic aspects of the game- fighting, exploring, mining and trading. Albeit exploring is just really long delivery runs within the bubble at this point. Also you get good cash and can rank up in Federation/empire to unlock better ships. (I liked Pikum for this but there are loads of places that it works with)
Fly safe and above all, have fun

Don't even look at the bigger ships. Do not make them your goal. A small cheap ship such as a Vulture gives you just as much bang for your buck as a Federal Corvette. Once you crawl your way out of your sidewinder and get some credits rolling in you will be on the path to whichever ship you choose. And doing whatever the **** you want to do in said ship.

And PS. Leave the starter system. Even a couple of jumps away is safe enough.
There are worse people than me looking to drag you in front of their gun sights.

Get into a Cobra MK III as soon as you can.

Make sure your Equipment and Modules are only Grade D (Life Support)(Scanner) if not important to your ship....
since D modules are the lightest and give you the highest weight/jump ratio to maneuverability.

A grade the modules which help you the most .... Thrusters .. Frame Shift Drive..... Shields

For goodness sake do not install B grade modules .... ever .... except perhaps Fuel Scoop or other weightless systems.

No matter what have at least 1 A Grade Shield Booster and a Chaff Module.

Always TURN OFF your Cargo Bay Hatch ... will give you 3% more generator power to work with. (just turn it on those few times you will ever need it)

Make sure your Docking Computer, Fuel Scoop, SRV, Wake Scanner and similar Modules are set to a LOW power priority .... 4 or preferably 5 in case your ship
ever has power issues during combat.

Do not EVER carry cargo that you are not willing to LOSE .... or Afford to rebuy.

And goodness ...... stay away from any weapon turrets ... just use gimballed or fixed ..... once your ship is LARGE enough to manouvre like a pregnant whale ... then you can go turret.

Need a quick Mil Cr to A grade that Cobra Mk III ? Find a Resource Extraction Site on a Nearby PLanetary Ring. Low/Normal/High are all good.
But follow the local Feds ... let them start the killing ... add your own fire to get the Bounty.

Remember ...... Friendly Fire has Right of Way. And keep yours away from the feds. If too close .... retrieve your weapons to stop firing.

And please try to have fun .... I still wave and greet other CMDRs when I see them ... as long as they do not take shots at my Cargo Hatch.

Hi,

Everyone has given tons of good advice here so I'll just say a few things from someone who has pretty much seen and done everything this game has to offer.

1) Educate yourself on what there is to discover and do but try not to spoil things using videos and images (it's difficult but rewarding). For example capital ship battles. You need to know these appear in war systems in conflict zones but you don't need to watch the video of someone seeing them first as it'll likely spoil it for you. Same with aliens etc. It's not always possible to find things out like this but it's great when you can.

2) Do try everything, don't just stick to one thing. Even if you mess around with (for example) mining for a few hours and don't like it at least you've tried it.

3) Don't aim for the biggest ship as fast as possible, some of the small ones are really amazingly good fun.

4) If you are on PC feel free to add me in-game (same name as here but no space between), I'm usually flying around somewhere in the human inhabited bubble but I do have over 250 people on my friends list so you will probably have to remind me of who you are and where I know you from :)

On external tools/sites I have gotten away with using just the following:
General info - Forums/reddit
Ship creators - Coriolis & Ed shipyard
Engineer info - Inara
Trade/modules/other - eddb

There are tons of others but those are the ones I've used in my time here.

I don't use any graphics enhancers. I load EDMC and ED Discovery every time I load Elite and the sites I use most are EDDB for trading and EDSM for keeping a track of my exploration routes. Also I use Inara as a glorified commander's log, it also hasa sueful list of all engineer recipes.

I use to use EDDB for finding ship modules but since I got Elite status I just get everything at Founder's World.

Don't obsess with money and big ships, it'll rob you of your enjoyment and gaming experience; your wealth is how much you enjoy the game. As someone else mentioned, try everything the game has to offer. Understand the ED is continuously WIP and the Devs are constantly tweaking things, so things are being nerfed and buffed with every update rendering many videos tutorials useless. Subscribe to Vindicator Jones' and Obsidian Ant's Youtube channels and watch their content as they've got a lot in-game information to offer. Keep in mind the updates change what was in their older videos - hence why video titles state post update.

Finally, ED's wiki is your best friend. If you want to know something, check the wiki, there's lots of information on the site explaining how things work within Elite Dangerous.

Got the game a few days ago, and im loving my time so far. Ive gotten to about 1.5 mil credits, own a hauler, eagle, sidewinder, and used to own a viper (accidenty sold it for a hauler). I just arrived at the Community goal before i got off last night and im curious what else i should try to acomplish. Also, if anyone is willing, i wouldnt mind having or being a wingman. Ign is Jarius Stormwall

P.s. I dont have horizons, so i cant work towards engineers or anything

My tip to all new players is to earn some starting cash:

Find a system to call home.

By having a 'home' system you can start working on your standing with the local 'Minor Factions'. These Minor Factions are the ones that issue missions. Reason for improving your standing with them is to gain access to missions with better payout. Higher standing = much higher payouts (A simple transport 10 x Biowaste that gives you 50k payout with low standing can give as much as 500-700k with high standing such as Friendly and Ally).

Personally I also find that the game gives me more meaning if I pick a minor faction and decide to make that faction my 'go to' faction. E.g. I do trading in the stations they own, deliver combat bonds there and deliver exploration data there. I also primarily pick missions that support that faction and if there is a civil war or a war then I side with that faction in the Conflict Zones (CZ).

Also by repeatedly doing missions for a minor faction and interacting with their stations you can improve their influence in the system which may lead to a Boom state. A faction in a Boom state will issue missions with very rewarding payouts.

An ideal system will have several stations (1-2 large stations and 1-3 outposts), as well as Gas Giants with asteroid rings.

Such as system will allow you to do mining in the asteroid rings, as well as bounty hunting in the Resource Extraction Sites (RES) also in the asteroid rings.

With multiple stations there is also good opportunities to travel to each station and stack up on missions, as well as look for Naval Progression missions (Federation and Empire only) if you want to increase your rank to gain access to the faction ships (Federation: Federal Dropship, Assault Ship, Gunship and Corvette. Empire: Imperial Eagle, Courier, Clipper and Cutter)

After you gained some money and understanding of the game you can branch out more into a specific career.

Want to do Exploration then look into Exploration ships... E.g. Diamondback Explorer, Asp Explorer, or if you are on a budget the Adder can be a nice entry-level exploration ship.

Want to do Bounty Hunting then look into combat ships... The logical progression towards combat ships is usually Eagle -> Viper Mk3 -> Vulture -> Fer-de-Lance

For trading the Type6, 7, 9 is the route to go, although you can also do cargo variants of the Cobra Mk3 & 4, Asp Explorer and Python.

For multipurpose you want ships like Adder -> Cobra Mk3 -> imperial Courier -> imperial clipper (optionally Python if you don't have/want Imperial navy ranks).

Hope this helps you on your way.

Indeed this. There is no end game. And small/mid size ships are more fun to fly anyway (in my humble opinion). Enjoy the ride Commander! :)

I often find myself going back to "lesser" ships.

Doing conflict zones in an FdL is alright... doing them in an Eagle or a Viper Mk3 means putting the pedal to the metal and proving you can fly. Way more exciting and fun, even though less efficient and "safe" than just blasting things with an FdL and shrugging off hits.

I also end up going back to my Cobra Mk3 ALOT for mission runs and SRV salvage missions, even though I have a Gunship, T7 (and earlier had both Python and Clipper, but sold both).

Smaller ships are just enjoyable to fly, and cost (virtually) nothing if you lose them, even for the rookie pilot.

didn't read the whole thread, so if you already got this advice I digress :)

Get the HCS voice packs, and the EDDI tool, it will change your game 100%.

PS: I don't have any affiliation with them, I just like what they are doing.
