News Ship naming – transmission intercepted.

Rebel factions appear to have obtained secret information regarding the naming of ships and adding those names to Commanders’ hulls.

We can confirm that this information is correct and naming of ships is a feature that will be added to Elite Dangerous: The Commanders (2.3). Everyone will be able to rename their ship for free in game and there will also be the option to purchase cosmetic name plates which will allow Commanders the ability to display that name on your ship’s hull via a special decal. These additional features will be made available in the near future with a catalogue of designs. We’re looking forward to seeing you display your ship names with pride.

I can also confirm that the character limit for ship naming is determined by width.

Have a good evening.

Zac

Wow. I think you may have just tempted me to spend money in the store again! Let's see how it works in the beta though! Cheers Zac!

The point is that it shouldn't be a paid cosmetic to begin with.
This.
Or if it is to be released as paid cosmetic then have the balls to do just that.. and dont slip it into an update to boost up its otherwise not very impressive contents. Into an update for which I already have paid in full I might add!!

At long last.. yay! :D But as others have asked, how will it work with multiple ships etc, and in the original post a character limit of 22 was mentioned then scored out, will there be a character limit? Are there going to be any restrictions on naming conventions?

To people who seem to be upset about paying for name plates, how long do you think is fair for Frontier to operate the servers etc without generating more money to do so? Bandwidth is stupidly expensive (just ask any of the guys on the forum that run their own ISPs) which is why there is the server/P2P hybrid set up. To try and keep the running costs down.

Kickstarter backers asked for it to assist with paying for server costs which is usually covered in a monthly charge for MMO games. Alternatively we could have pay to win. Take your pick :)

We didn't "ask" for it IIRC. We were asked if the community thought cosmetics were acceptable, and a poll said 'yes'. Zac seems to imply that there will be a range of designs for name stencils. Personally, I think one 'basic' stencil should be free, but have other designs as 'payware'. I presume we are just really talking about font changes?

Oh, and yes, everything is ridiculous these days. Bethesda were rightly, roundly blasted for the horse armour thing, yet 10 years later, we just grit our teeth and begrudgingly get on with it. :(

Because it's a basic feature that many other games, including F2P games, give you for free. Because 'ship naming' implies an actual name on your ship hull. Because Elite and Horizons are full price. Because ship customization is a core tenet of the game and locking pretty much every visual customization behind a paywall really hurts that aspect of the game.

I wouldn't have a problem with paid fancy fonts like comic sans or something, but locking basic block lettering behind a paywall is a scummy move.

Paint jobs? Paid paint jobs?

Please pass me the patch notes and beta version you are playing. To claim it does not have impressive content whilst not seeing it seems like you've pulled a statement from thin air (impolite sentence re-worded).

Also your opinion of content doesn't really matter, you knew the headlines of season 2 updates (except 2.4) when you bought the DLC, it's hardly fair to complain now you are getting what you paid for. Ship naming wasn't in there.

Yeah on ships I fully agree flat colours should be free but thats a different kettle of fish. I'll also fully change my view if the ship name is over say £4 UK. If it's like weapon colours I'm happy enough.

Frontiers server cost are minimal as they use p2p networking for players while other MMO games that have monthly charge have dedicated servers that cost a lot if you don't have those dedicated servers the server cost isn't much. Most free to play games, EA, ubisoft games that have actual servers offer more customization options for free than elite.

I am fine with having cosmetics to buy and i have bought cosmetics, but with elite cosmetics are expensive, poor quality and most items only work for one ship and have limited color options. For example in Rainbow six siege (deticated server not p2p) you can buy skin packs for 3€ that give you universal skin for every gun (about 100 guns in game) and when new guns are added to the game you get the same skin you already bought for new gun for free. Then most expensive skin pack in steam is 10€. And same time you can unlock some skins/items with in game money (not event skins, every week there is new skins you can get free with in game currency that aren't limited time only) without paying real moeny. Same time you can even unlock all dlc characters with in game money if you want. And people say Ubisoft is greedy and over use micro-transactions.

Because free to play games are supported either by advertising or by pay to win microtransactions. Just because some choose not to charge for naming proves nothing.

All the paid for items in Elite are purely optional and cosmetic, you don't want to pay for them, fine, you don't have to. Not having a nameplate/shipkit or paint job won't detract in any way from the gameplay you've already brought and paid for.

Really feel like i'm banging my head against a brick wall here.

Elite isn't supported by P2W micros or advertising, no, you are absolutely right.

Elite is supported by the money myself and others have ALREADY PUT DOWN.

The point is that it shouldn't be a paid cosmetic to begin with.

It's a cosmetic thing, you don't need it to play the game, it's just something you can do to make you ships more custom made.

Don't want to pay, don't buy it, $1 - $2 for a name plate is actually not the end of the world.

Elite: Dangerous was never pitched as a pay-to-win game, very much the opposite.
Selling Ship Skins, Decals, Bobbleheads and other cosmetic items in the store were always part of FD's plans to raise extra revenues.
But sure, blame the [evil] Kickstarter backers.

Yes, exactly my point, you've already put down money for the game, you've got the game, end of.

If you want extras on top, you have to pay extra for them, not a particularly difficult concept to grasp.
