The Galactic Mapping Project & Historical Archive of Exploration

Since I was in the general region of space, I took a jaunt over to NGC 6820 Sector GW-W d1-36. In EDSM, this system was listed as the possible location of an asteroid base. I was sceptical, since that system was not listed in the galactic map as having any population or any government. Nevertheless, I decided to take a short trip from the Crescent Nebula and check it out just to be sure.

There was nothing there, not even any planets.

Thanks for checking out this rumored location of an asteroid base. The entry has been removed from the map.

EDIT:

And awesome image from Medusa's Rock

POI Name: Mu Cephei

POI Type: Stellar features

GalMap search reference: Mu Cephei

Description: Mu Cephei is a red supergiant with a visible luminosity 100,000 times that of Sol. Its radius is 1260 times that of Sol, and is one of the brightest and largest red supergiants in the galaxy. It is 19.2 solar masses, and has neared the end of its evolution, beginning to fuse helium into carbon. Mu Cephei is likely to end its life as a black hole after a type II supernova.

Mu Cephei was noted by William Herschel and is also known as Herschel's Garnet Star. The star was first visited by CMDR Exocett and first logged for EDSM by CMDR unrealization.

POI Update:

POI Name: V4641 Sagittarii
GalMap Ref: V4641 Sagittarii

Desc: "V4641 Sagittarii is a variable X-ray binary star system in the constellation Sagittarius. It is the source of one of the fastest superluminal jets in the Milky Way galaxy. Amateur astronomer Rod Stubbings made a visual observation of a dramatic outburst during earth year 1999. This observation helped to confirm the source was a black hole with a close binary star.

Survey in 3304 confirmed the black hole of 7 sol masses was closely orbited by a class-A super-giant of 7 solar masses and 11.7 solar radius. The extreme x-ray bursts and jets are caused by matter in-falling to the black hole from the surface of the supergiant."

The intense radiation of the neutron star has increased the surface temperature of the gas giant so high that it emits a blinding white glow and no surface features can be determined. Commanders who approach the object closely will find their visual systems overloaded and controls reduced to nothing but a pure white blur. What allows the gas giant to remain intact is not understood, as the extremely hot gas should have been dispersed off into space or pulled into the neutron star long ago. This is truly an unexplained mystery of our galaxy.

This object was originally discovered by Cmdr Allitnil."

Description: 'De machinis exspiravit', Ghosts of the machines in the latin language of Old Earth.
In April of the year 3303, the Mercury 7 Expedition encountered bizzare occurances on the moon of the first planet of the system. They encountered ships and SRVs that were identical in every way to those of several Commanders. These 'Ghost Ships', as the were dubbed, were apparently unmanned...seemingly abandonded there on the Moon. The Mercury 7 concluded that these 'Ghosts' were ships from a parallel universe, that ended up in our reality through a dimensional fissure. Although what happened to those Commanders from that parallel universe was never discovered, and remains an disturbing mystery to this day. It confirms the thoughts of many Commanders, that the Ishtar region is indeed haunted...

Um, not according to its edsm.net page ( https://www.edsm.net/en/system/bodies/id/1350519/name/Fleasi+MS-U+e2-301 ). The GG is at 11,150K (still ridiculously hot, particularly as they have the neutron star luminosities all wrong in ED - but not 11 million kelvin)

Thank you, you're correct; I misread it as "11,150k Kelvin". Description fixed.

Is it really "blinding white" though? I've never seen a planet do that before.
Yes it is, but it's not surprising you've not come across one as they may be the rarest objects in the ED galaxy. I've come across two of them to date (the first was https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/131543-The-Ultimate-Hot-Gas-Giant which is actually closer to the NS but it is a cooler star so the GG isn't as hot). Apart from that I've seen one other confirmed sighting and one claimed (but without screenshots).

The visual effects haven't substantially changed in the 2 years since I came across that first one, at least they were the same in 2.2 as per Ibanix's screenshot and this one from February:

Well now I'm going to have to go visit that one too, and get photos for another POI entry :p

Perhaps it might be worth mentioning this object then (although I would need to go back and get closer, I think it might be something similar): Phoi Aim DJ-W b43-2 B1. This is not a gas giant but I was heading for the Rift after visiting Colonia in my Asp, testing my loadout for Distant Stars, when I passed through this system and saw that the planet of the secondary star was shining brighter than the star itself! I was in a hurry, so I only captured a screenshot of the system view (I didn't even stop to scan! I am in too much of a hurry at times...). It is a 'lava world' 147.45 ls from the jump-in point. If you're heading towards the Rift it is only a little out of the way, roughly in the direction of NGC 281 iirc. I want to visit the Zurara after the event on 29th April (busy until then) so I can capture some screenshots then if no one else has paid it a visit in that time.

I say they're all worth mentioning. More we learn the better, and more we can visit the better.

Some interesting with yours though, it shows on the galmap as a red dwarf system with 3 M stars and a T. If there is no NS there then we've learned that these objects can happen without a close NS.
