#support3rdparty - Why we temporarily shut down our sites.

Well, that's balls up my ED session I had planned for tomorrow.

Come on Frontier, please make this situation right again, so normal play can resume.

Elite Dangerous is very much a community game, & this does include the third party tool developers.

Well, good thing I wasn't planning to do anything major in ED this weekend (dripping sarcasm).

In all seriousness, tools like INARA, EDDB, and the coriolis sites are indispensable tools for this game. While I am a bit displeased with the sites being down, you guys still have my support.

If it weren't for the three sites I just mentioned, I wouldn't have any of my ships and would probably still be doing rare runs in my Asp X (nothing wrong with that, but my FDL and my Python are just too much fun). Heck, my Asp X is now a fuel rat ship, and it wouldn't be anywhere near as good at its job without coriolis.io. I bet the last couple of rescues I had wouldn't have gone anywhere near as well if I wasn't able to tinker in coriolis to squeeze as much jump range as I can out of it. For the record, my Asp X has a max jump range of 45 ly, and a min jump of ~41 ly. It wouldn't be anywhere near that without some of these tools.

You have my full support guys, you are doing far better job than FD ever did

Thank you
I would be all for shutting those down for a month.. ED would probably simply die though

And the fanboys calling you terrorists... truly pathetic... I knew some people here where delusional but this is too much.. this thread shows precisely who you are. <spits on the ground>

I hope those devs are prepared for the worst case scenario.

This is a brash move that can't be backed down from easily, I was not even aware that they were having this level of difficulty with frequent API changes.

If I were FD I might have considered hiring some of these guys if they had been a little more reasonable. However I imagine that this sort of "strike action" is not a quality HR people look for when hiring.

This is very, very risky and more than a little childish. I hope that this pans out for them, but as someone who played beta just fine with pen and paper notes... Well, I won't suddenly stop playing Elite if these sites dissapear.

good luck. I do use your tools and they are helpful with playing the game. Frontier should be supportive of your tools they do help with the ED experience.

If all of the 3pd drop their tools (Which won't happen unless FD switch off public access to the API) then we cna at least clean up the forums abit a remove that sub forum altogether!

That's the nature of developing third-party mods. The company/entity/community/product you're making them for are not obligated to give you anything in return. That's like doing 3 years of charity work and then complaining that you weren't thanked enough.

If you're developing third-party mods and you use "but I'm working for free" as an argument for not getting your own way then there's something wrong - you are not entitled to anything by default.

We know that - the point is - They aren't obligated to keep their sites up either so they can close them down when they like. If people are complaining this hurts the weekend's event and then saying you don't need the sites then stop complaining. If nobody needs these sites, why are people here complining they're closing them down???

Are they what extorting anyone!
Hyperbole much!
The situation is better described as:
If I help my neighbour dig rocks out of his garden so he can have a smooth lawn and I ask 'can you give me the keys for the shed so I can use the wheelbarrow to take the rocks to the skip' and they don't answer why the heck would I continue to help them out if they're making an already tough job harder by not responding and providing basic tools?

You analogy totally does not match the situation. FD never asked for any help and since the 3rd party devs can't work directly on ED, you can't dig rocks out of their garden.

Let me try.

There is a company who are making a game. The game is lacking some features that some people would like to see in that game. Some people decide to make those features available out of game, and the devs do actually provide a way for those people to get access to certain bits of information from in game, which is rather nice. The devs didn't really make any promises about making things easier or better for the other people, although they talked about it from time to time. They said they would like to... maybe... soon... possibly. But it never really happened. Still, the other people still had their third party stuff and stuff worked. But those people still wanted more help from the devs, and they asked and asked and asked, but never got what they wanted. So, in the end, they pulled down their sites in protest, hoping that it would convince the developers to do what they wanted, knowing full well it would cause an uproar in the community, that pressure from the community would get the developers to do what they wanted.

Well... that's part 1 over. Let's see how part 2 goes eh?

But seems to fit with "Do as we say, or else"... you decide which dictionary word best fits that description.

Unless my little analogy doesn't quite fit in some way.

If I was FD I'd just stop public access to an API. ED does NOT NEED 3rd party tools to be playable.
But why assume that the good people at Frontier are complete idiots?
They are clearly highly intelligent. [yesnod]

Thus; they know the great value of the 3rd party tools.

Dear 3rd party developers.

I don't care about your tools, don't use them, so strike all you like. Basing your applications on APIs that aren't officially supported comes with the risk of them changing without notice, it something us devs have to live with. All this look like is you are intentionally sabotaging Frontier and Drew event on 29th of April and Frontier work to stabilise and fix bugs in the current build of the game. So if I did use your tools I could never support your actions anyway.

So shut down your sites, keep them down forever for all I care, new ones will arise, they always do, might even bring some more innovations to the table.

Your sincerely

Kinda like what Drew's doing with not delaying the event even though he asked the community and the entire community said to delay it?

Kinda like what FD is doing by pumping out patch after patch to give PC players a smooth ride for the event, even though they broke the Xbox version so that it's unplayable for some people so xbox players miss the event entirely?

Sabotage away 3rd party! Drew and FD had this coming.

I use some of these sites, in particular coriolis, eddb and edsm, and will clearly miss them. They're important to me to play the game my way and should be properly supported by FD in a reasonable way.

Still, I would have very much preferred if you had properly contacted FD in advance. As it stands, it looks like you just shut down everything upon short notice, in a time where FD are troubled with the release of 2.3 anyway and just in time for the 29th event. If it is so, this is definitely not fair behaviour. You could well have issued a warning lets say 2 weeks in advance to give FD a chance to decide on how to get on and come up with a proposal. Sad story.

I wouldn't have kept playing without these tools or even been a nightly player. I've spent plenty of money on skins, colors, nameplates, etc while playing this game. These 3rd party tools like eddb have kept me playing this game with ease. and along the way FDev has profited from the extra time I've spent on this game. However terrible it's buggy patches are or the complete lack of support for other niche's in game such as mining exploring and commodities trading these developers build tools to support us and I appreciate this. It often makes this game playable

...Elite Dangerous is still playable...

Reports just coming in live from CMDR PiLhEaD, near Branglal....

"...yes yes I can confirm that station... <fzzz> ...has allowed me docking permission... wait... <snrfffpap>...

...and finally a picture of a kitten....

I tested it and you are right! I mined this big asteroid ring and after five hours of mining, I earned myself 300k worth of metal! I immediately went to the nearest 20 stations to buy that 5A fuel Scoop I wanted, and the 20th station really sold it! It was only a 4 hour journey! Then I took on this 20000ly passenger mission to colonia and after only 60 hours I reached colonia! All the detours I had to make paid off! Shame I crash-landed on this high G world when getting fuel, so after 70 hours i am at -20M and the passenger was also cross, but ED IS PLAYABLE without 3rd party tools!

As frustrating as this is, if it wasn't for Inara etc I wouldn't have the the wing I'm in and the great community there. Not sure what FDev will do about it but sad it has come to this...

Also this. Way to kick the hand that feeds you in the balls.

I'm supporting FD on this one.

For everybody that resents any kind of strike just remember that all your basic rights at work and in many other areas of your lives were won by people who cared enough to fight for better conditions.
