Computer feminization

Choice of voice

Elite is all about freedom and choice. I don't see why 'voice choice' cannot be part of the final game.
Possible project for the ED Fan Creations, expansion pack etc? I'm sure the audio files would be easy to do and add in.

I'm sure many stars would love to put their voice down on ED (for free?) the game is that well loved.
I'd like Professor Stephen Hawking voice input on ED.

I'd ask the wife but she says her instructions are always ignored?...pardon?

There is proven research that the reason most computer voices and announcement speakers do better when they are female. It is the voice people take most notice of on a subconscious level. Male voices are often ignored or miss heard.

As for the game having a female voice doesn't bother me, but I am all for options to have it turned off for those that don't like female voices. I just think its a bit odd people have a problem with this.

considering how its naval tradition to refer to ships as females which i dont think is sexiest at all. thats just how it is...it would make more since that a computer voice on a ship would be female thats just my thinking. I like it and i think "most" people wont have a problem with it. I think not having the LCARs female voice of the star trek comptuers just wouldnt have been the same :p.

Why are you feminizing everything?

Why are voices:

-on stations
-on your ship
-of your voice command responses

all female??

Could you please stop doing that.

Sorry, but it wouldnt feel right talking dirty to a male ship's computer.

I'm happy with the female one.

I suppose they could, in time, add an option to change it for the people that feel they would prefer a man.

They are not ALL female...there's a warning or advertisement voice inside the space station that is male, with what sounds like a Dutch accent. That's the only one that springs to mind though.

And now they offer female avatars. Where the world is coming to?

/Sarcasm off

In case you are being serious, for some reason people love female voices doing announcements. There are lot of astethic reasons for that, but I think it is mostly because you can hear it better over male's voice. However, not all stations have female voices in ED, so that's still kind of moot.

Voice command responses are configurable.

And ship voice will be also changeable.

I swear to god it sounded like I heard Grant Woolcot on one of the stations. I even asked him and he denied it, but i was sure it was him.

Ships have pretty much always been referred to in the feminine. It's an obvious extension for space ships to be the same.

Would be a sensible choice to make it selectable though.

Did you somehow miss that in real life all vehicles / ships / space stations are "female" and denoted as a "she"?

Ask any captain of "X" and he(or she) will say that "X" is in fact female, hence they get female voices.

Examples: The International Space Station (ISS) is a "she". The space shuttles are "shes", your car is a "she", the trains are "shes", the plane you flew on going on your vacation is a "she".

It would just be weird having a female machine with a male voice :)

There was a military study many years ago that found female voices to be clearer and more understandable than male voices. That is why "B itchin Betty" is a thing in most jet fighters around the world.

I think its something to do with a higher pitched voice cutting through all the "noise" (engines, explosions, guns etc.) so that you can understand it better.

Brian :)

In most other countries they are referred to as "it", are you saying ED is not set for an international audience?

Since when is hyper-sexualization of inanimate objects and hetero-normative framing a thing?

Most voices on IVR (Interactive Voice Response) systems tend to be female. Usually with a warm and mellow tonal range and a neutral or 'pleasant' accent. The reasons for choosing these types of voices are many and have been tested and proven to work effectively in making callers or listeners have confidence in the service they are using (obviously some people just will not be placated!)

Fillip has previously expressed a very personal dislike to the perceived presence of only a female voice in the game with regards computers etc.

His reasons are his own, but the title of this post is greatly insulting and inflammatory to the devs, and pretty much everyone else with it's intended connotations.

Announcements, automated warnings and so on are typically done with a womans voice.

There's a few reasons for this.
The first is that men pay more attention to a womans voice. Originally this was noticed and exploited with no real desire to know why. But apparantly when a man hears a womans voice it fires up a different part of the brain which coincidentally makes him pay more attention since he's thinking less about himself than he would if he heard a mans voice (something about all men immediately comparing themselves to each other, dubious but plausible)

The second is that in the English language and indeed many languages. Womens voices are clearer and typically harder to drown out with background noise.
I recall hearing the opposite is true with mandarin.

There are no doubt others but I'm too lazy to think about them
