The Console Is Not Your Enemy

Explain the dumbing down of textures in the cockpits of various multi-crew ships.

When people say "Dumbing down" it's not the game mechanics they're talking about, its the visuals being reigned in so as not to stress the less powerful consoles, making the game more playable across all platforms and easier to work on as a whole for the developer since they're not breaking the game apart into 2-3 separate entities to satisfy the wants of the various groups of players.

Which other cockpits have been dumbed down. The only one I know is the Anaconda and that looks like a rendering problem, a bug. I know that some others have been improved.

There's lots of scuttlebutt about Frontier "dumbing down" Elite so they can make more sales on the consoles. I'm a console gamer, but I hope this isn't true. It's really not in Frontier's best interest to go down this road. I actually think, done right, the consoles can help the PC side of the game.

Is there really ? This is the first thread I've seen dedicated to Frontier 'dumbing down' Elite in the context of consoles, so is there really lots or is this just a thread that was triggered by a discussion in some other thread and 'lots' = some guy out 10's of thousands.

No, my pythno cockpit looks ridiculous with this new simetrical look. the gunner (copilot ) used to sit on the back.

Wow you are seriously bitter mate.

I'm not bitter :D I'm just saying to you that you can go REALLY low on a Pc... so saying that this is above MINIMUM is not much anyway... Someone played Elite in a Ardueno right?!

It's just a shame that we don't see the money being made by the push to launch on consoles having any meaningful impact on the development of the game. The team is still as tight-lipped as ever about the future of ED and we're no closer to knowing what's coming for 2.4--the "secret" update most of us have already paid for.

Moving the seat isn't the issue here. So where the graphics down graded in the python or was stuff just moved around?

Moving seats around has nothing to do with consoles but to do with multicrew.

So Michael Brookes who says the render paths are different, so the dumbed down graphics argument is wrong, he works for FDev, he's just a liar?

They are as tight lipped about the PS4 release. It appears this is just FDev. Nothing to do with consoles.

It didn't run on Raspberry Pi. That was an April fool.

I remember in my poorer days when I had to sell my PC and go to consoles. That was a shock. It was like going to infant school from university (that`s when universities actually meant something)...

Deep tactical games were few and far between and even when you got one it was so dumbed down that even the options wouldn`t let you do anything. And the control pad!

I ran crying back to my pc when i was finally able to afford one again!

Frontier have replied to the accusation of "dumbing down for consoles" several times.

It is not true. End of story.

Fact is that whilst configuring the game to run on Xbox they made many code improvements which were then used to improve the PC side of the game. Win, Win.

As an aside, the GAME is treated equally on the forums, no matter the platform it runs on. Its the same game everywhere, with of course some allowances made for the vast range of possible PC configurations that do in some ways restict the experience available on lower/older PC's.

yeah the XB1 is weak sauce hardware. i was gutted when it was announced (even back then both the ps4 and XB1 could (should) have launched with the specs of the PS4pro and then i do not think there would have been an issue (even back then the ps4pro level of hardware was technically feasible)

but, even accepting how lame the XB1 is, it is still more powerful than many of the low end PCs and macs running the game... esp when you take into account that consoles always punch above their weight compared to PCs due to the streamlined software running on them and the standardised platform which allows devs to wring every last cpu cycle of of them.

Its just babble from People who think they are superiors to others based on Hardware they have. The Xbox One isn't even the weakest Hardwar the game is designed to be running on, so I doubt its the reason for graphical downgrades.

This game barely gets a drop of sweat from the xbone...some the other games I play are visually far more impressive with much more fluid gameplay that do stretch the legs of the console. The only place in this game that I found makes the bone work hard was sag A, and is just as good visually as a mid range pc and plays better...I say this as someone who plays both pc and console and play the console more because my pc doesnt deliver the smooth gameplay the bone does. In respect of a mid range pc, the game almost feels dumbed down to accomodate the faster console, not the other way around.

Besides which, one the devs already confirmed that the pc version is not being dumbed down back when everyone was complaining about the beigification of the milky way...how that started is anyones guess but there really is no facts to back it up. If there are, then by all means lets see them, otherwise its just master race dribble. You make a claim the visuals are dumbed down...really, its just a claim nothing more.

As fer the op...rep given and I agree with yer sentiments. The console kiddies went and got older, just like the pc gamers...inconvenient side effect of time passing. As much as I love pc games, and Ive been a pc gamer since the early 90s as well as a console gamer since the mid 90s, I gotta say the consoles of today have been steadily gaining ground on pc the last 5 years especially.

The dumb games are ten a penny...just as many dumb games out fer pc if ye take a long hard look through the titles, not forgetting the truly dumb browser games found on fakebook and played on the phone or ipad. Fun some of them but dumb nonetheless, so using that as an argument is just hilarious.

Money and the future...my local Game shop is a good example. One small shelf in the back left corner devoted to pc only, with a third taken up by usb gizmos, gaming mouse and keyboards and some vouchers fer graphics cards not on display. The entire rest of the shop has the xbox and ps4 games taking up the rest of the shop floor...an area and selection that make the pc look like the poor relation.

Thats where the money is nowadays...and the friction and salt from the master race? They feel threatened of course...why else would the animosity exist unless it was pure spite? Deep down feelings...the ones ye never admit to ^

Absolutely, if there is any real downgrade (my cockpit looks great so I'm not convinced it warrants people crying, pulling out their hair and rubbing ash on their faces) it will be due to optimisation with mcrew in mind to try and get the best experience.

They can actually say that, but i don't actually believe. It's a simple question of logic. I Don't care about graphics, lets be straight here, my problem with consoles is the fact that they remove complexity in game mechanics, we cannon have much mouse interaction because of Consoles, so we cant have complex menus, Withouth complex menus task are dumbed down so it does not become a complex situation for Xbox players.

The Xbox one version of ED looks about the same, if somewhat lower than my PC.
Which is both good and bad really.

Good because it's seemingly keeping up with my PC.
But bad because my PCs GPU is 7 years old. Lol

My laptop on the other hand. Xbox wins, hands down, 100%.
Heck, even the Raspberry Pi isn't much worse than my laptop. Lol

From my experience with PC/Console games, having owned both;
Games made for PC and ported to consoles, while (usually) having reduced visuals, are generally the same.
But! Games made for consoles, ported to PC, and generally completely broken. :p

bear in mind i am on the side of OP here and absolutely think it is not (only) the consoles to blame for ED not only running on top of the line hardware..... (if you want a machine killer get a chris roberts title, they always break the top end)... ED has always been about running on the lower end hardware and scaling up to the top tier

but that said, @verminstar i think you are stuck in the past a bit. The days of a platform not having shelf space in a bricks and mortar store being a sign of the end is long gone. PC is 95% (a guess) a digital platform.

you dont NEED a bricks and mortar shop to buy from steam / uplay / Origin / MS store and havent done for a long long time.

trust me, Sony and MS would love to have the same percentage of their console games sales made digitally with zero distribution costs that is seen on the PC.

PC is going nowhere
console is going nowhere

both are doing just fine imo

All that said... I too wish there was a higher level of detail with increased LOD draw distances etc... sure some can run in 4K which is fab, but i would rather 1080P with increased details... but its not the fault of consoles that it is not there imo.

Saying something doesn't make it true, and I've been told many untrue things by people trying to part me from my money.
