I am sad :(

I feel for you OP.

FSD malfunctioned in a NS jet? Or did you hit the exclusion zone?

You have to keep the FSD repaired in between NS boosts. The chance of FSD malfunction increases with the damage caused by boosting.
NS boosts only save you 4 jumps or 4 minutes. Not worth the risk IMO.

When I was last out exploring I found there was a damage percentage where the FSD started malfunctioning. From memory I think it was when it got below 80%. As long as you repair it before or at that marker you should be fine.

My condolences! I had a similar experience recently. I was making my way back to the Bubble from Colonia via my first trip to Sag A*. I got to neutron-hopping, and everything was going fine. Then, only 4000 light-years from the Bubble, I slipped up. I jumped into a regular star-system where only 3 other stars were reachable—and none of them were neutron stars. I needed a grade 3 boost and didn't have the polonium to make it happen. I sent out the rat-signal, but even the venerable Fuel Rats couldn’t find a source of polonium that was reachable from where I was stranded. In the end, there was no choice but self-destruct, sending me back to Colonia with all that exploration data *poof* into the wind.

So I will have to start the journey back to the Bubble soon if I ever want to engineer my ship—on the bright side, I got to see asteroid bases for the first time, and I got to participate in the bounty hunting CG!

I was very worried that this setback would depress me to the point of not wanting to pick up the game again, at least for a while. It’s amazing how I've shaken it off. I think this is a testament to how much fun Elite is, that even when your mistakes cost you all this investment of effort, all you need to do is switch things up for a little while. I’m glad I took the time to bounty-hunt for a bit instead of just starting back for the Bubble immediately. Now I’ve cooled off, and I’m actually looking forward to venturing back out to the black again.

Good luck with your next journey, Lunchmonkey, wherever that may take you!

Ah yes, coincidence I am sure but yesterday due to my own stupidity I pancaked onto the dark side of a moon while going down to check a POI. Nothing like yours, only about 1000ly of data, I was 13km up and took my eye of the screen for a couple of seconds not realising that I was doing around 430kmps straight down, doesn't take long. Of course it didn't help that I had just dropped in to Flaming Star Logistics Centre to downgrade my shield generator to get a few more light years jump range out of the old beast, I may have been ok with my old shields.

So what can you so, oh well lets fire her up and head out, maybe the Jellyfish Nebula, that looks interesting and it's only 3kly away :D

Ouch... Happened to me once. Only about 7 months here but I decided to save my data from a long SagA to Colonia trip (the long roundabout way) and crashed into a planet while getting AFM refill mats... I took a little break from ED and when I came back, did combat while preparing for a new trip. I know the pain though and I really wanted to just give up exploring. But I took a break and the urge to see the stars came back. Fly safe!

Really wish we could transfer materials (ie Polonium) for this type of thing, maybe something for 2.4?

That is in fact my next destination. Actually Rosette first then Jellyfish

Oh no! Sorry for that commander, I know the feeling... Almost list 130m of data due to a bug. I was farming rank 5 LYR for the bonus, I head in a station and the nose of my Conda touches the inside of the mail slot. Insta-death! I have 2660MJ of shields, so that didn't make any sense. I raised a ticket and was lucky enough to get the data back.

Condolences Commander +1
I think it is part of becoming a true Explorer when you experience 'that feeling'.
Mine was a stupid crash whilst taking a selfie just 1kLy from SGRA*
Lots of good advice above - get back in the saddle! I am flying Eagle III - tells its own story :)

19 months work lost ;(
About 4000 scanned systems that would have had my tag on - including all the planets as I scanned everything. Lost.

I am literally shaking with self rage.

:O!

How did it happen? did you fall into the exclusion zone or was it an FSD failure below 80% while supercharging dropping you out of SC?

For those asking, I always kept my FSD above 95% by repairing after every 4 or 5 neutron jumps. The rest of my modules were 100% bar my hull at 96%.
I fell too close the NS and could not get out again. The credits dont really matter but the explorer rank I would have gained and the 4K+ systems that were fully explored are gone :(

OP, do you remember what system you were in?
You could submit a tourist beacon there... like a remembrance spot for the many explorers disappearing in the black.
...or better yet, a road sign type warning about the dangers of Neutron Highways.

I know its too late but you can escape the neutrons jets and exclusion zones,

here's a video I made some time back

Fly safe!

Ouch. The rank, at least, is pretty trivial for you to do now anyway since 2.3... but the tags on 4k fully explored systems? Yeh, that sucks. You should submit it as a tourist beacon though, like pippo said. "Lunchmoney's Demise", or whatever.

How does one ask for a tourist beacon, anyway?

Ouch! Condolences, CMDR.

Fully scanning 4000 systems is an incredible amount of effort and data. Do you use any tools (e.g. EDD/EDSM) for capturing/sharing the scanned information? That way the legacy of your CMDR could be having submitted that treasure trove of data to the exploration community.
